Best Transactional Email Services in 2026

The short answer

  1. #1 Postmark: Transactional email with separate streams and long logs. Best for: Teams that need traceable receipts and resets.
  2. #2 Resend: Developer-first email API with React-based templates. Best for: Startups writing templates in code.
  3. #3 SMTP2GO: SMTP relay and API with phone and chat support. Best for: Small businesses relaying app and device mail.

Visibility in this ranking can be paid for. Payment moves a vendor's position within the shortlist; it never adds a vendor, and it never changes a word of the review. The largest vendors in transactional email services cannot hold places 1 to 3. Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order. How it works: placement disclosure · editorial process.

The 12 tools, reviewed

#1 Postmark

Transactional email with separate streams and long logs · United States · postmarkapp.com

transactional message streams deliverability

Postmark earns first place by narrowing its scope. It sends application email, not newsletters, and the sales page says as much. The entry plan starts at 10,000 emails for $15 and keeps data for 45 days, a window long enough to answer a support ticket opened the following month.

  • Pricing: Flat monthly tier + overage. Free at 100 emails a month, then Basic at $15 for 10,000 emails, Pro at $16.50 and Platform at $18, all with extra emails priced per thousand. Free plan: free plan.
  • Best for: Teams that need traceable receipts and resets
  • Strengths: REST API; SMTP service; Message streams.

Where it falls short

The free plan is only 100 emails a month with no overage, so it works for testing and nothing else.

Wrong for

A company that mainly sends newsletters or campaigns, or one that wants SMS and WhatsApp from the same vendor.

#2 Resend

Developer-first email API with React-based templates · United States · resend.com

developer-first api templates in code

Resend is the service a developer starts using on a Friday afternoon. It offers an HTTP API, official SDKs, templates written as React components and a free plan with 3,000 emails a month and three domains.

  • Pricing: Flat monthly tier + overage. Free at 3,000 emails a month (100 a day), Pro from $20 for 50,000 emails, Scale from $90 for 100,000, with overage per thousand. Free plan: free plan.
  • Best for: Startups writing templates in code
  • Strengths: Email API; SMTP; React Email templates.

Where it falls short

The free plan stops at 100 emails a day, which catches a launch-day spike.

Wrong for

A company with no developer on staff, or one that needs long-established deliverability consulting and phone support.

Visit Resend →

#3 SMTP2GO

SMTP relay and API with phone and chat support · New Zealand · smtp2go.com

smtp relay support tiers

SMTP2GO has the least fashionable pitch in the list, a reliable relay for mail from applications, printers, scanners and plugins, and for many small companies that is the whole requirement. The free plan allows 1,000 emails a month without a card, Starter costs $10 for 10,000, and ticket, chat and phone support are included on Starter.

  • Pricing: Flat monthly tier + overage. Free for 1,000 emails a month. Free plan: free plan.
  • Best for: Small businesses relaying app and device mail
  • Strengths: SMTP relay; REST API; Subaccount management.

Where it falls short

Its pages put less weight on SDKs and template tooling than Resend or Postmark do, and reporting covers 30 days on Starter. Invoices are billed in US dollars even when the page shows approximate euro or pound prices.

Wrong for

A product team that wants templates in code, stream separation and deep API tooling.

#4 Amazon SES

Pay-per-use email sending inside AWS · United States · aws.amazon.com

aws usage-based high volume

Amazon SES is the raw material of this category. It sells sending by volume, $0.16 per thousand emails on the Essentials plan and lower above ten million a month, and it plugs into the rest of an AWS account.

  • Pricing: Usage-based. Essentials lists $0.16 per 1,000 emails. Free plan: none.
  • Best for: Engineering teams already running on AWS
  • Strengths: API and SMTP; AWS SDKs; Virtual Deliverability Manager.

Where it falls short

New accounts begin in a sandbox with daily limits and verified recipients only. The pricing page lists no free monthly allowance, and charges for attachments at $0.12 per gigabyte come on top.

Wrong for

A small business without a developer who can run AWS accounts and read CloudWatch metrics.

#5 SendGrid

Twilio's email API, SMTP service and marketing campaigns · United States · sendgrid.com

twilio email api incumbent

SendGrid is the name that comes up first when someone says transactional email, and its Email API, SMTP service and Marketing Campaigns product under one login explain why. It handles subusers, teammates and event webhooks, and its billing guide says plans are monthly subscriptions, not metered usage. It is now a Twilio product, and the sendgrid.com address leads into Twilio's site.

  • Pricing: Flat monthly tier. Monthly subscription plans by email volume with a free trial, no card required. Free plan: free trial.
  • Best for: Companies already buying Twilio products
  • Strengths: Email API; SMTP service; Marketing Campaigns.

Where it falls short

The pricing numbers did not appear in the page text we fetched, so a buyer must run the calculator or ask sales. Its own billing guide says moving to a free marketing plan deletes contacts.

Wrong for

A buyer who wants prices published in plain text and a smaller vendor relationship.

#6 Mailgun

Developer email API, SMTP relay and inbound routing · United States · mailgun.com

developer sinch inbound routing

Mailgun is the incumbent that developers still choose on purpose. Four published tiers run from a free 100 emails a day to Scale at $90 for 100,000 emails, with Foundation and Scale starting with a one-month free trial. Inbound routes, templates, webhooks and an email validation add-on come in the same account, and SAML single sign-on arrives at Scale.

  • Pricing: Flat monthly tier + overage. Free at 100 emails a day. Free plan: free plan.
  • Best for: Developers who want tiers with inbound routing
  • Strengths: REST API; SMTP relay; Inbound routing.

Where it falls short

Log retention is one day on Free and five days on Foundation, a tight window for debugging. The Free plan allows only one sending domain and two API keys.

Wrong for

A team that needs weeks of searchable logs on a small budget, or one that wants no parent-company risk.

#7 MailerSend

Transactional email API with SMS and WhatsApp add-ons · United States · mailersend.com

sms templates small teams

MailerSend suits a small team that wants a free start and a visual template builder beside the API.

  • Pricing: Flat monthly tier + overage. Free for 500 emails a month. Free plan: free plan.
  • Best for: Small teams wanting email plus SMS
  • Strengths: Email API; SMTP relay; SMS API (US and Canada).

Where it falls short

The Free plan allows 100 API requests a day, one domain and one webhook. Hobby keeps activity data for one day. SMS is limited to US and Canadian customers.

Wrong for

A sender with many client domains or a need for long log history on a small plan.

Visit MailerSend →

#8 MailPace

EU-hosted transactional email API and SMTP · United Kingdom · mailpace.com

eu hosting no tracking independent

MailPace is the smallest company on the page and the plainest in its promise. Pricing is by emails sent and received, every feature is included on every plan, domains and users are unlimited, and data is hosted only in the European Union on infrastructure from small local providers.

  • Pricing: Usage-based. Pay by volume with the first 10,000 emails priced as one block, advertised from under $4 a month. Free plan: none.
  • Best for: Privacy-minded European senders
  • Strengths: HTTP API; SMTP server; Inbound email.

Where it falls short

There is no open or click tracking by design, so engagement reports are thin.

Wrong for

A team that measures engagement through open and click rates or wants sandbox testing and a visual editor.

Visit MailPace →

#9 Mailtrap

Email sending API combined with an email testing sandbox · United States · mailtrap.io

sandbox testing api

Mailtrap pairs a testing sandbox, where staging emails land harmlessly, with real sending, so a team can test and send under one account. The Free plan allows 4,000 emails a month at 150 a day, Basic starts at $15 for 10,000 emails, Business lists $85 for 100,000, and Enterprise reaches $750 for 1.5 million.

  • Pricing: Flat monthly tier + overage. Free at 4,000 emails a month, Basic from $15 for 10,000, Business $85 for 100,000, Enterprise from $750 for 1.5 million. Free plan: free plan.
  • Best for: Developers testing email before sending
  • Strengths: Email API; SMTP; Email Sandbox.

Where it falls short

Free logs last three days and the daily cap is 150 emails. Business and Enterprise prices are a long way above Basic, and dedicated IPs appear only on higher plans.

Wrong for

A buyer who needs a cheap, steady relay with long logs and phone support.

#10 Brevo

CRM and marketing suite with an SMTP and API transactional channel · France · brevo.com

marketing suite france multichannel

Brevo sells transactional messaging as one of several capabilities, the others being campaigns, automation and a CRM. The transactional channel runs through an SMTP relay and an API and supports SMS and WhatsApp as well as email, which helps a small firm that wants one login for newsletters and receipts. The free plan allows 300 emails a day.

  • Pricing: Flat monthly tier. Free plan with up to 300 emails a day. Free plan: free plan.
  • Best for: Small firms wanting email, SMS and CRM together
  • Strengths: SMTP relay; Transactional API; Email templates.

Where it falls short

The daily cap of 300 emails applies to the free plan, and plans are built around contacts and marketing features as much as raw sending.

Wrong for

A developer-led team that only needs receipts and resets with detailed logs.

Visit Brevo →

#11 Elastic Email

Email API, SMTP relay and bulk sending platform · Canada · elasticemail.com

bulk low cost api

Elastic Email prices aggressively. The Free plan gives 3,000 emails a month, Starter lists $19 for 50,000 and Pro $49 for the same volume with inbound processing, webhooks and reseller features added. It treats transactional mail and bulk campaigns as one product, which suits a company that sends both from one platform and wants a single low bill.

  • Pricing: Flat monthly tier. Free at 3,000 emails a month. Free plan: free plan.
  • Best for: Cost-sensitive senders mixing bulk and API mail
  • Strengths: Email API; SMTP relay; Email Designer.

Where it falls short

Its pitch mixes bulk and transactional sending, so a buyer gets less separation from marketing traffic than a transactional-only provider offers. Pricing is shown through a volume slider, and the differences between Starter and Pro sit in features.

Wrong for

A company that sends only a few critical messages and needs the strictest separation from bulk senders.

Visit Elastic Email →

#12 Mailjet

Email API and SMTP relay with campaign editor · France · mailjet.com

campaigns sinch france

Mailjet gives a small company the largest free allowance in this ranking, 6,000 emails a month with a 200-a-day cap, together with an email editor, APIs and SMTP relay. Essential costs $19 for 15,000 emails with no daily limit, and Premium at $29 adds advanced statistics, automations and landing pages.

  • Pricing: Flat monthly tier. Free at 6,000 emails a month (200 a day). Free plan: free plan.
  • Best for: Small teams combining campaigns and app email
  • Strengths: Email API; SMTP relay; Webhooks.

Where it falls short

The free plan carries a 200-emails-a-day ceiling, and the higher plans are packaged around contacts, segmentation and marketing features. Sharing an owner with Mailgun means two entries here answer to one parent.

Wrong for

A developer team sending only receipts and resets at volume, with no use for campaign tools.

Visit Mailjet →

What this category is

A transactional email service is a hosted sending platform that delivers one-to-one, event-triggered messages such as receipts, password resets and notifications from an application. It offers an HTTP API and SMTP relay, manages sender reputation and authentication records, handles bounces and complaints, and reports delivery events through logs and webhooks.

How we ranked these

Five tests, applied to every product. The order is not the tests alone: places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them, and the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order.

  • Setup: DNS records, a verified domain and the first test send.
  • The real price: Volume tiers, overage, dedicated addresses and retention.
  • Getting your data out: Templates, suppression lists and event history.
  • Independence from the vendor: Parent companies, shared IPs and the SMTP escape hatch.
  • Who it's for: Volume, team and how much deliverability work you want to own.

What the data says about this market

The twelve products here fall into three camps. Four belong to larger platforms: SendGrid to Twilio, Amazon SES to Amazon Web Services, Postmark to ActiveCampaign, and Mailgun and Mailjet to the Swedish group Sinch, which is why that last pair counts as one family for ownership purposes. Brevo is a mixed case, a French company that sells transactional email beside marketing and CRM. The rest are independent specialists.

How to choose

  1. Count what you send and what you must keep. Pull four numbers from your own system before opening any pricing page: messages sent in your busiest month, the largest burst in one hour, the number of distinct sending domains, and how many days of logs your support team actually reads.
  2. Send real traffic through two services for a week. Pick two candidates from different parts of the ranking, verify the same domain on both, and route a slice of real messages through each: password resets, receipts and one message type that tends to bounce.
  3. Plan the exit before you sign. Write down how you would leave, in four lines. Where do templates live, and can they be exported?

Questions and answers

What is the best transactional email service in 2026?

Postmark ranks first of 12, best for teams that need traceable receipts and resets. Resend is second (startups writing templates in code) and SMTP2GO third (small businesses relaying app and device mail). Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands, wherever the category has them.

What is the difference between transactional and marketing email?

A transactional message is triggered by one person's action, such as a purchase or a login attempt, and carries information that person expects. Marketing email goes to a list and promotes something.

Is Amazon SES really cheaper than the other services?

On unit price, yes. Its Essentials plan lists $0.16 per 1,000 emails, against $0.90 per 1,000 beyond the included volume on Resend's Pro plan and $1.80 on Mailgun's Basic tier.

Do I need a dedicated IP address?

Probably not under roughly 300,000 emails a month.

Which services have a free plan I can use in production?

Nine of the twelve offer a permanent free plan: Mailjet (6,000 emails a month, 200 a day), Mailtrap (4,000), Resend and Elastic Email (3,000 each), SMTP2GO (1,000), MailerSend (500), Brevo (300 a day), Mailgun (100 a day) and Postmark (100 a month).

How do SPF, DKIM and DMARC fit into setup?

SPF lists the servers allowed to send for your domain, DKIM signs each message so receivers can verify it, and DMARC tells receivers what to do when either check fails.

What does it take to move away from SendGrid or Mailgun?

Plan for DNS, suppressions and code, in that order.

How long do these services keep message logs?

It varies from one day to a year, and entry plans are the shortest. Mailgun's Free plan keeps one day of logs and its Foundation plan five, Mailtrap's Free plan keeps three days, MailerSend's Hobby plan one day and Starter seven, and Postmark keeps 45 days on its Basic plan with up to 365 days configurable on Pro.

Can I send newsletters through a transactional API?

Technically yes, but it is a bad habit. Transactional services price by message, not by contact, offer little in list management, and mailbox providers judge bulk mail by different rules.

Does it matter whether the vendor is in Europe?

It matters for contracts and data location, less for deliverability. Only Brevo, Mailjet and MailPace are headquartered in Europe among the twelve, and MailPace states that all its data is hosted in the European Union.

What does 100,000 emails a month cost on each plan?

By our arithmetic from the pages we read: Amazon SES about $16 on the Essentials rate, Resend $35 on Pro, SMTP2GO $75 on Professional, Mailtrap $85 on Business, Mailgun $90 on Scale, and Postmark about $133 on Pro including 90,000 extra emails at $1.30 per thousand.
