SendGrid vs Mailgun

Mailgun wins for a developer or small team that wants published tiers, a free plan and a choice between US and EU hosting. SendGrid wins for a company that wants sending and marketing campaigns in one product, already uses Twilio, and does not mind asking for a quote. On price clarity alone, Mailgun is the easier of the two to judge.

Where they differ

What you get for nothing

Mailgun keeps a Free plan of 100 emails a day, with one sending domain, two API keys and one day of log retention. SendGrid announced in May 2025 that it was retiring its Free Email API and Free Marketing Campaigns plans, and its pricing page now offers a free trial with no credit card instead. A hobby project or a staging environment can stay on Mailgun indefinitely, while SendGrid requires a paid plan once the trial ends.

Edge: Mailgun

Seeing the price before talking to anyone

Mailgun's page lists Basic at $15 a month for 10,000 emails, Foundation at $35 for 50,000 and Scale at $90 for 100,000, with extra emails from $1.80, $1.30 and $1.10 per 1,000 on the three tiers. SendGrid's pricing page, as we fetched it, showed no figures in its text, and its billing guide says plans are monthly subscriptions rather than metered usage. A buyer budgeting from a spreadsheet will find Mailgun simpler.

Edge: Mailgun

Tools for staying out of spam folders

SendGrid sends Trial and Essentials accounts from shared IP groups, includes one dedicated IP with Pro, and offers Expert Services on Pro and Premier for warmup plans and reputation work. Mailgun lists automated dedicated IP warm-up, one dedicated IP included at the top tiers, IP pools on Scale, and paid email validation. Each route needs a more expensive tier before dedicated reputation arrives, so neither gets the round.

Edge: even

Campaigns and teams under one roof

SendGrid sells Marketing Campaigns beside its Email API and SMTP service, with subusers and teammates documented in the same console. A company that sends receipts and newsletters can keep both in one vendor relationship. Mailgun focuses on sending, receiving and validating through its API, templates and webhooks; it has no newsletter product on the pricing page we fetched. For mixed transactional and marketing use, SendGrid has the broader product.

Edge: SendGrid

Debugging history and data location

Mailgun retains logs for 1 day on Free and Basic, 5 days on Foundation and 30 days on Scale, and lets one account send through either the US or the EU. SendGrid's Email Activity feed reaches 30 days only with a paid history add-on, and Twilio says it stores all Email Activity data in the United States. Teams with European customers or longer debugging needs get more from Mailgun.

Edge: Mailgun

Who owns the vendor

Both sit inside larger groups. SendGrid is a Twilio product, and its documentation points buyers to the Twilio console and login. Mailgun's terms are issued as Sinch Email's terms, the group that also runs Mailjet, though the contracting company is Mailgun Technologies, Inc. under Texas law. A buyer wary of a large parent finds no difference here, and neither vendor is small.

Tally: SendGrid 1, Mailgun 3, even 2.

When neither fits

A team that wants prices on the page and a smaller vendor can look at Postmark, which publishes a block price per tier, or at Resend, which has a free plan of 3,000 emails a month. Both are listed in the same ranking and sit above SendGrid and Mailgun on our list.

Questions and answers

Does SendGrid still have a free plan?

No. Twilio's changelog says SendGrid retired its Free Email API and Free Marketing Campaigns plans from May 27, 2025, after a 60-day transition. Its pricing page now offers a free trial with no credit card required, followed by a paid plan. Mailgun still has a Free plan of 100 emails a day.

How much does Mailgun cost?

Mailgun's Free plan costs $0 for 100 emails a day. Basic starts at $15 a month for 10,000 emails, Foundation costs $35 for 50,000 and Scale $90 for 100,000. Foundation and Scale start with a free month, and extra emails are billed per 1,000 at rates that fall as the tier rises.

Which has better deliverability tools, SendGrid or Mailgun?

Both cover the basics, and neither clearly leads. SendGrid offers dedicated IPs, IP pools and Expert Services for Pro and Premier accounts. Mailgun offers automated dedicated IP warm-up, IP pools on Scale and an email validation add-on. In both cases the dedicated-reputation tools are on the higher tiers.

Can Mailgun send from the EU?

Yes. Mailgun says its service is hosted in both the US and the EU, so one account can send through either region and keep its data there. SendGrid's documentation says Twilio stores all Email Activity data in the United States, so European data residency is a point to confirm with sales.

Which is better for newsletters as well as app email?

SendGrid. It sells Marketing Campaigns alongside its Email API and SMTP service, with contact lists and templates in the same account. Mailgun's pricing page lists templates, webhooks and inbound routing but no newsletter product, so a team sending both kinds of mail would pair it with another tool.
