Best Identity Theft Protection Services in 2026

The short answer

  1. #1 IdentityIQ: Four-tier US credit and identity monitor with a VPN add-on. Best for: US adults who want stolen-funds cover at every price point.
  2. #2 F-Secure ID Protection: Finnish breach monitor with password manager, no US credit file needed. Best for: Europeans and expats who need breach alerts, not credit reports.
  3. #3 Allstate Identity Protection: Restoration-first plans with a family option for up to ten members. Best for: Households that want a cheap recovery service.

Visibility in this ranking can be paid for. Payment gives a vendor more visibility, higher up on the review pages; it never adds a vendor, and it never changes a word of the review. The largest vendors in identity theft protection services cannot hold places 1 to 3. Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order. How it works: placement disclosure · editorial process.

The 11 tools, reviewed

#1 IdentityIQ

Four-tier US credit and identity monitor with a VPN add-on · United States · identityiq.com

Four tiers $1M stolen funds US restoration team

IdentityIQ is the clearest ladder in this category. Secure Basic, Plus, Pro and Max each state what is added, and every one carries a $1 million stolen-funds reimbursement, a figure other vendors reserve for their dearer plans.

  • Pricing: Per tier / month. Secure Basic is listed at $8.49 or $10.49 a month depending on the billing toggle, rising to $31.49 or $34.99 for Secure Max. Free plan: none.
  • Best for: US adults who want stolen-funds cover at every price point
  • Strengths: Secure Basic to Secure Max tiers; $1 million stolen funds reimbursement; Three-bureau credit report monitoring.

Where it falls short

Basic gives only daily one-bureau monitoring, and the three-bureau view starts at Pro. The pricing toggle shows two figures per tier without making clear which applies to a yearly plan, so confirm at checkout.

Wrong for

Anyone outside the United States, or a user who wants only breach alerts without credit reports, will pay for features they cannot use.

#2 F-Secure ID Protection

Finnish breach monitor with password manager, no US credit file needed · Finland · f-secure.com

Finnish vendor Breach monitoring Password vault

F-Secure ID Protection watches for your email addresses, usernames, phone and card numbers, bank accounts, passport and driver's license numbers in breach data and tells you what to do for each type. A password manager sits in the same app. The company states it is based in Finland, follows the GDPR and shields data from requests that do not meet EU legal standards.

  • Pricing: Per device count / year. €49.99 a year for one device, €69.99 for three and €79.99 for five, all including VAT. Free plan: free trial.
  • Best for: Europeans and expats who need breach alerts, not credit reports
  • Strengths: 24/7 online identity monitoring; Breach alerts with guidance; Email, phone, card and passport number monitoring.

Where it falls short

There is no insurance figure on the page and no credit-bureau monitoring, so it does not pay for losses or watch for fraudulent loans. The reseller on the checkout is Cleverbridge GmbH, which means billing and refunds go through a third party.

Wrong for

A US resident who wants reimbursement for stolen funds, credit lock or a restoration team needs a bureau-linked service such as IdentityIQ or Identity Guard instead.

#3 Allstate Identity Protection

Restoration-first plans with a family option for up to ten members · United States · allstateidentityprotection.com

Insurer-owned Restoration plan Family up to 11

Allstate separates what many vendors blur. Its lowest plan is a restoration service only, with a status tracker, a scheduler to book time with a specialist and $25,000 of expense reimbursement for $3 a month. Higher tiers add one-bureau and three-bureau monitoring, credit lock help, bank and 401(k) transaction alerts, and on the Blue family plan up to $2 million for ransomware and home-title costs.

  • Pricing: Per tier / month. Identity Restoration is listed at $3 a month for one person and $6 a month for a family (you plus ten members, from $0.55 a person). Free plan: free trial.
  • Best for: Households that want a cheap recovery service
  • Strengths: Full-service identity restoration; Restoration tracker with online scheduler; $25K expense reimbursement.

Where it falls short

The cheapest plan is explicitly without protection features, so nothing will warn you that fraud has started. Our server copy of the plan page did not show every tier's price, and many rows read as not included at lower levels, which makes comparison slow.

Wrong for

A buyer wanting alerts, three-bureau reports and scores in one low plan should go to IdentityIQ's Basic or Identity Guard's Value tier rather than the restoration-only option.

Visit Allstate Identity Protection →

#4 Identity Guard

Six-tier US plan set with first-year and renewal prices side by side · United States · identityguard.com

Renewal shown Six tiers $5M family option

Identity Guard prints its first-year price and the renewal rate in the same box, which is rare in this category and lets you plan three years of cost. Value is basic breach and transaction monitoring, Total adds bank account monitoring, three-bureau credit monitoring and a monthly score, and Ultra adds social media, card, 401(k), title, criminal-record and USPS address checks plus an Experian credit lock and white-glove resolution.

  • Pricing: Per plan / year. Individual plans run $90.00, $200.04 and $300.00 for the first year (renewing at $107.88, $239.88 and $359.88). Free plan: none.
  • Best for: Households that want to budget the renewal in advance
  • Strengths: Value, Total and Ultra tiers; $1M or $5M identity theft insurance; Dark web monitoring.

Where it falls short

Insurance comes in only two sizes, $1 million for individuals and $5 million for families, and the tiers carry long feature lists whose small differences are easy to miss. No free trial is shown.

Wrong for

A person who wants a VPN, antivirus and data-broker removal in the same plan should look at Aura, since Identity Guard's extras stop at a password manager and safe browsing.

#5 ID Watchdog

Equifax-owned plans with child credit locks and cyber-crime claims · United States · idwatchdog.com

Equifax brand Child credit lock Employer channel

ID Watchdog stands out for families. On the Family Plan you can create an Equifax credit report for a minor and lock it, and a scan alerts you if a file already exists under the child's Social Security number. The page advertises up to $2 million for stolen funds, up to $5 million of insurance and a US-based restoration specialist, plus VPN tools and cyber-crime claims for most states.

  • Pricing: Per plan / month. Plans are bought direct or through an employer; price lists sit behind the Compare Plans page, and the page text we read carries no price. Free plan: none.
  • Best for: Families who want a locked credit file for each child
  • Strengths: Up to $5M identity theft insurance; Up to $2M stolen funds reimbursement; US-based restoration specialist.

Where it falls short

Plan prices were not in the page text, so we cannot say what the coverage costs. Cyber crime coverage is unavailable to New York residents, and the child lock only works against the Equifax file, not the other two bureaus.

Wrong for

Someone who wants a three-bureau lock on a minor should place bureau freezes directly, since ID Watchdog's child lock covers Equifax only.

#6 Trend Micro ID Protection

Free tier plus paid app for leak alerts and social account watch · Japan · trendmicro.com

Free tier Breach based Japanese vendor

Trend Micro offers a free tier with anti-tracking, social account monitoring, leak checks and a password generator, and paid plans add web threat protection and a password manager for $49.99 or $69.99 a year. Alerts cover leaks on the internet and dark web, and logins on Facebook, Google and Instagram, while certified resolution experts are on call around the clock.

  • Pricing: Per plan / year. Free tier available; Standard is $49.99 a year (list $89.99) and Plus $69.99 a year (list $129.99), each with a 7-day free trial. Free plan: free plan.
  • Best for: Individuals who want a free or low-cost leak alert
  • Strengths: Free, Standard and Plus tiers; Personal data leak check; Social media account monitoring.

Where it falls short

The page lists one 12-month, one-device Standard plan and is unclear on which tier the insurance applies to. There is no three-bureau credit monitoring, so new credit lines in your name are not caught. The footnotes name the underwriters but not the claim limits.

Wrong for

A buyer whose main fear is a loan taken out in their name needs credit-file monitoring from IdentityIQ or Equifax Complete, not a leak alert.

#7 Bitdefender Identity Theft Protection

US identity monitoring and insurance from a Romanian security vendor · Romania · bitdefender.com

Romanian vendor US only Two tiers

Bitdefender's identity product is built for the United States and states that a valid Social Security number is required. Standard gives round-the-clock monitoring, one-bureau credit monitoring and up to $1 million of insurance; Premium raises that to three bureaus, up to $2 million and a ransomware and fraud reimbursement. The page promises US-based Certified Protection Experts who complete paperwork and phone calls for you, and a month-by-month score graph.

  • Pricing: Per plan / year. Standard and Premium plans are sold yearly or monthly with a first-year price; the figures load by script and were not in the server page text. Free plan: none.
  • Best for: Existing Bitdefender customers in the US adding identity cover
  • Strengths: Standard and Premium tiers; Identity theft insurance up to $1M or $2M; Credit report monitoring, 1 or 3 bureaus.

Where it falls short

The prices render through script, so we could not read them. The service is tied to US credit data and a Social Security number, so it is closed to the vendor's European customers.

Wrong for

A European customer of the antivirus line cannot use this service; they should look at F-Secure ID Protection for breach alerts.

#8 Aura

All-in-one identity, fraud and family safety subscription · United States · aura.com

Bundle Data removal Family plan

Aura combines more categories than any other service here: monitoring, a credit lock, antivirus, a VPN, a password manager, data removal from more than 425 brokers and spam-call filtering, all on one account. The Individual plan includes $1 million of insurance and the Family plan, covering five adults and unlimited kids, includes $5 million. A 14-day trial and 60-day refund on annual plans lower the risk.

  • Pricing: Per plan / month. Individual is $12 a month billed annually ($15 monthly), Couple $22 ($29) and Family $32 ($50). Free plan: free trial.
  • Best for: Families wanting identity cover and device security in one bill
  • Strengths: $1M, $2M or $5M identity theft insurance; Three-bureau credit monitoring; Instant credit lock.

Where it falls short

Parental controls and child wellbeing belong to the separate Kids plan, and child members on the family plan only get account and SSN monitoring. Insurance and cyber cover are underwritten by third parties, with the cyber add-on capped at $50,000.

Wrong for

A person who only wants a restoration service or a single-purpose monitor will pay for a VPN and antivirus they may already own.

#9 Equifax Complete

Bureau-run credit and ID theft monitoring with restoration specialists · United States · equifax.com

Credit bureau $500K cover Monthly billing

Equifax sells a direct product at $9.95 a month, billed monthly with no contract, which is the simplest billing in this list. It includes dedicated ID restoration specialists and up to $500,000 for certain out-of-pocket expenses, with Complete Premier and a Family Plan above it that add three-bureau reports and scores.

  • Pricing: Per plan / month. Equifax Complete is $9.95 a month, billed monthly with cancellation at any time and no partial month refunds; Complete Premier and a Family Plan are listed as higher tiers. Free plan: none.
  • Best for: Budget buyers who want bureau monitoring with a low insurance cap
  • Strengths: Credit monitoring and alerts; Up to $500,000 identity theft insurance; ID restoration specialists.

Where it falls short

The insurance cap is the lowest headline figure among the bureau-owned plans at $500,000, and the three-bureau headline appears on the Premier and Family descriptions rather than on the base plan.

Wrong for

A household wanting a larger cap or a bundle with a VPN should compare ID Watchdog or Aura rather than the bureau's own base tier.

Visit Equifax Complete →

#10 Experian Identity Theft Protection

Bureau-run monitoring with Plus and Premium plans and credit lock · United States · experian.com

Credit bureau Three-bureau monitoring Credit lock

Experian's page opens with a seven-day trial that then bills $24.99 a month for Premium, which includes up to $1 million of insurance and fraud resolution. Premium watches all three bureaus, scans over 600,000 web pages daily for stolen data and runs monthly privacy scans that find and help remove your details from people-finder sites. A one-click lock and unlock covers your Experian file.

  • Pricing: Per plan / month. Free for 7 days, then $24.99 a month for Experian Premium, with a credit card required at sign-up; the Plus plan is also offered. Free plan: free trial.
  • Best for: Existing Experian users who want one bureau relationship
  • Strengths: Up to $1M identity theft insurance on Premium; Three-bureau credit monitoring; Dark web scans of 600,000+ pages.

Where it falls short

The trial requires a credit card and flips to a $24.99 monthly charge unless you cancel inside seven days. The lock covers the Experian file, not the other two bureaus. The page we read describes the insurance only under Premium.

Wrong for

A buyer who wants insurance for under $15 a month should look at Equifax Complete or IdentityIQ, not Premium.

#11 Norton 360 with LifeLock

LifeLock identity plans, standalone or bundled with Norton 360 · United States · lifelock.norton.com

Gen brand Million Dollar package Bundles

LifeLock advertises up to $3 million to cover lawyers and recovery costs, a restoration guarantee that says a specialist will fix the case or your money back, data broker removal and scam reimbursement of up to $10,000. Three plans scale by how many accounts you hold, from checking and credit to a 401(k) and property, with separate family plans that assign a specialist per adult.

  • Pricing: Per plan / month. LifeLock plans run Core, Advanced and Total, plus family and Norton 360 bundles (Select, Advantage, Ultimate Plus). Free plan: free trial.
  • Best for: Households who want device security and identity cover from one vendor
  • Strengths: Core, Advanced and Total plans; Million Dollar Protection Package up to $3M; Restoration guarantee.

Where it falls short

The prices render without readable figures in the page copy, and a renewal line follows each one, so confirm what year two costs. The scam reimbursement is only $5,000 or $10,000 per family on some plans.

Wrong for

Someone who wants the plainest, lowest-cost entry should pick IdentityIQ or Equifax Complete instead of a bundle with extras they will not open.

Visit Norton 360 with LifeLock →

What this category is

Identity theft protection is a paid subscription that watches credit files, public records, the dark web and sometimes bank activity for misuse of a person's name, Social Security number or accounts, alerts them, and supports recovery through a restoration specialist and an insurance policy that reimburses certain expenses.

How we ranked these

Five tests, applied to every product. The order is not the tests alone: places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them, and the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order.

  • Setup: What you hand over before it works.
  • The real price: First-year rate against the one that follows.
  • Getting your data out: What survives a cancellation.
  • Independence from the vendor: Who owns the data feed.
  • Who it's for: Three households, three answers.

What the data says about this market

Of the eleven products ranked here, eight are sold by US companies, one is Finnish (F-Secure), one Romanian (Bitdefender) and one Japanese (Trend Micro), with Experian's product sold through its US entity. The geography matters because the underlying product, credit-file monitoring, exists only where credit bureaus keep consumer files and let third parties watch them. In the US, three bureaus hold the data and two of them, Experian and Equifax, sell consumer protection directly.

How to choose

  1. List what you actually need to be alerted about. Start with the accounts that would hurt.
  2. Read the insurance and restoration terms, not the headline. Open each policy summary and note what the amount covers: out-of-pocket expenses, lost wages, legal fees, stolen funds, or all of them.
  3. Test the exit before you pay for a year. Use the trial or the money-back window to try the cancellation path.

Questions and answers

What is the best identity theft protection service in 2026?

IdentityIQ ranks first of 11, best for uS adults who want stolen-funds cover at every price point. F-Secure ID Protection is second (europeans and expats who need breach alerts, not credit reports) and Allstate Identity Protection third (households that want a cheap recovery service). Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands, wherever the category has them.

Is identity theft protection worth paying for if I already freeze my credit?

A freeze stops new credit in your name at the bureaus where you place it, and it is free.

How much identity theft insurance do I need?

Most real losses are small expenses: notary and mailing fees, a few days of lost pay, legal letters.

Can people outside the United States use these services?

Mostly no. Aura, IdentityIQ, Identity Guard, ID Watchdog, Equifax, Experian, LifeLock and Bitdefender's identity product monitor US credit files and ask for a Social Security number; Bitdefender states the requirement outright.

What does a restoration specialist actually do?

A specialist takes over the clean-up after fraud is confirmed: placing fraud alerts, contacting creditors, disputing accounts, filing police and FTC reports and tracking the case until it closes.

Are the cheap plans enough, or do I need the top tier?

For most single adults, the entry tier is enough if it includes dark web monitoring, SSN alerts and an insurance policy. Upgrading buys three-bureau reports and scores, credit lock, home title and 401(k) monitoring and a larger policy.

How do family and child plans work?

Adult members are fully monitored; children are usually covered by dark web and SSN monitoring only, since a minor has no credit file to watch.

What happens to my protection if I cancel?

Monitoring and insurance stop on the cancellation date, usually with no refund of the current month. Locks placed through the vendor's portal may remain with the bureau or may lapse, depending on the vendor, so confirm at the bureau.

Do these services stop identity theft?

No vendor says they can. Aura's own page states that no one can prevent all identity theft or monitor all transactions effectively.

Is a free credit-monitoring service a substitute?

For a single adult with low exposure it can be a useful first layer. Free services typically watch one bureau and alert you to new accounts, but they offer no insurance, no restoration help and often no family cover.

Can a business buy identity theft protection for staff or customers?

Yes, in two ways. Allstate Identity Protection and ID Watchdog both sell through employers and brokers as a voluntary benefit, with a separate enrollment path for employees.
