Best Mind Mapping Software in 2026

The short answer

  1. #1 MindMeister: Browser mind mapping with outline and presentation modes. Best for: Small teams mapping together.
  2. #2 Xmind: Mind mapping on desktop, web and mobile with local files. Best for: Solo professionals and consultants.
  3. #3 Mindomo: Mind maps with the widest file import list. Best for: Teams switching mapping tools.

Visibility in this ranking can be paid for. Payment moves a vendor's position within the shortlist; it never adds a vendor, and it never changes a word of the review. The largest vendors in mind mapping software cannot hold places 1 to 3. Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order. How it works: placement disclosure · editorial process.

The 11 tools, reviewed

#1 MindMeister

Browser mind mapping with outline and presentation modes · Germany · mindmeister.com

browser collaboration outline mode

MindMeister earns first place because the plans read the way a buyer reasons. The free account gives three maps with unlimited collaborators, templates and presentations. Personal removes the cap, Pro adds unlimited attachments, unlimited version history, Word and PowerPoint export and a Google Workspace link, and Business adds group sharing and compliance exports to your own servers.

  • Pricing: Per user / month. Free with three maps, then 6, 10 and 15 euros per user per month on the pricing page. Free plan: free plan.
  • Best for: Small teams mapping together
  • Strengths: Outline mode; Presentation mode; Task conversion in MeisterTask.

Where it falls short

The free plan stops at three maps. Personal allows two attachments per map and seven days of version history, so real document work needs Pro. We found no desktop program, only the browser and mobile apps, and SAML single sign-on goes through sales.

Wrong for

Anyone who needs local files that work without a connection, or a one-time purchase instead of a subscription.

#2 Xmind

Mind mapping on desktop, web and mobile with local files · Singapore · xmind.app

desktop local files Gantt

Xmind places second because it is the cheapest way to get a full-featured mapper with files that stay on your machine. Its pages say it works on web, desktop and mobile and that local files give you control of your data. Pro lists 50 online maps, custom themes, attachments and exports to PNG, SVG, PDF, Markdown and Office formats without a watermark.

  • Pricing: Per user / month. Free with ten online maps, Pro listed at $4.92 and Premium at $8.25 per month. Free plan: free plan.
  • Best for: Solo professionals and consultants
  • Strengths: Local file storage; Real-time collaboration; Pitch presentations.

Where it falls short

Collaboration, long version history and editable Gantt charts sit on Premium, and Pro and Free keep three days of history. Free maps are limited to ten online maps and three sheets per collaborative map.

Wrong for

Teams that co-edit all day on a budget tier, since live editing needs Premium.

#3 Mindomo

Mind maps with the widest file import list · Romania · mindomo.com

import and export education Gantt

Mindomo takes third place for portability. Its Premium plan lists imports from MindManager, Freemind, MindMeister, XMind, Bubbl.us, SimpleMind and iThoughts, plus Markdown, Excel and OPML, and exports to PDF, Word, text, OPML, HTML, PNG, Freemind and MindManager files. Professional extends exports to 21 formats including PowerPoint, Project and Excel Gantt data, and adds guest editing for people without an account. The free plan allows three diagrams with unlimited collaborators.

  • Pricing: Per user / month. Free with three diagrams, Premium from 6 euros and Professional from 13.5 euros per month. Free plan: free plan.
  • Best for: Teams switching mapping tools
  • Strengths: 14 import formats; 10 to 21 export formats; Gantt charts.

Where it falls short

The free plan is capped at three diagrams, and the price shown moves between 6 and 7 euros depending on the billing view, so confirm what you pay. Premium credits are 50 AI credits a month.

Wrong for

Someone who only wants a clean, minimal canvas for private notes and no extra features.

#4 Miro

Collaborative board with a built-in mind map maker · United States · miro.com

whiteboard collaboration AI

Miro sits fourth because its size rules it out of the top three, not because the mind map tool is weak. Its mind map page describes a prompt that generates a multi-branch map, and the same board can hold docs, tables, timelines, Kanban and slides, so a workshop can move from map to plan without leaving the page.

  • Pricing: Per user / month. Free with three editable boards, Starter $8 and Business $20 per member per month billed yearly. Free plan: free plan.
  • Best for: Workshops where maps feed other boards
  • Strengths: Mind map maker; AI-generated maps; Docs, tables and Kanban on the board.

Where it falls short

A mind map in Miro is one object type on a large canvas, so deep outlines, keyboard speed and outline views are weaker than in dedicated tools. The free plan keeps only three boards editable.

Wrong for

A person who maps alone or a team that needs only mind maps.

#5 MindManager

Desktop and web mind mapping for project work · Canada · mindmanager.com

desktop enterprise project planning

MindManager is fifth because it is a dominant incumbent, and the placement is a size rule more than a verdict. The company's pages offer Essentials as a web version for individuals, Professional as the full product for individuals and small teams, and Enterprise with an IT admin portal, single sign-on, volume licensing and large-scale deployment.

  • Pricing: Per user / year. Essentials, Professional and Enterprise plans with a 30-day trial; list prices did not render on the pages we could read. Free plan: free trial.
  • Best for: Project managers in Microsoft shops
  • Strengths: Mind maps, flowcharts and Gantt charts; Microsoft Teams integration; SharePoint and Jira integrations.

Where it falls short

The pricing figures did not render in what we could fetch, so we cannot quote a price. Desktop strength comes with Windows and Mac installs and an Enterprise tier built around IT administration.

Wrong for

A student, a writer or a very small team that wants a few maps a month.

Visit MindManager →

#6 Coggle

Browser mind maps with live editing and flowcharts · United Kingdom · coggle.it

browser real-time flowcharts

Coggle sits sixth with a clean claim: the free plan includes real-time collaboration, full change history, unlimited image uploads, PDF and image download, .mm and text export and Visio export, with three private diagrams and unlimited public ones. Awesome at $5 per month adds unlimited private diagrams, flowchart shapes and sharing by secret link without a login, and the page says private diagrams stay private and accessible if you cancel.

  • Pricing: Per user / month. Free with three private diagrams, Awesome at $5 per month, Organisation at $8 per member per month. Free plan: free plan.
  • Best for: Students and light team use
  • Strengths: Real-time collaboration; Full change history; Image uploads.

Where it falls short

The three private diagrams on the free plan fill up quickly, and the pages we read list no Gantt, task or deep presentation features. Free maps beyond three must be public.

Wrong for

A project manager who wants branches to become scheduled tasks with due dates.

Visit Coggle →

#7 Ayoa

Mind mapping, whiteboards and tasks with neurodiversity support · United Kingdom · ayoa.com

tasks education AI

Ayoa takes seventh place as the one product here built around how some people think rather than around an office workflow. The free plan allows ten mind maps, and a seven-day trial opens Ayoa Ultimate, which lists mind mapping modes, integrated whiteboards, task board and Gantt views, outline view, presentation modes, AI-assisted mapping and exports to documents, PDFs and images.

  • Pricing: Per user / month. Free with ten mind maps and a 7-day trial of Ayoa Ultimate; paid prices did not render. Free plan: free plan.
  • Best for: People who think best visually
  • Strengths: Multiple mind mapping modes; Integrated whiteboards; Task board and Gantt views.

Where it falls short

Paid prices did not render on the page we read, and a leftover promotion code from 2023 suggests care is needed when comparing. The suite of boards, tasks and mind maps is busy for someone who wants only a map.

Wrong for

A team that needs SAML sign-on and a published business tier with admin controls.

#8 SimpleMind

Mind mapping apps sold once per platform · Netherlands · simplemind.eu

one-time purchase cross-platform offline

SimpleMind is eighth because its model is the opposite of the subscription tools above it, which is exactly its appeal. The site says it is a single purchase per platform with no subscriptions, with a free edition for iPad, iPhone and Android, a Pro edition for Mac, Windows, iOS and Android, and a 30-day full trial on Mac and Windows.

  • Pricing: One-time per platform. Single purchase per platform, free edition on mobile, 30-day trial on Mac and Windows; prices did not render. Free plan: free plan.
  • Best for: Individuals who dislike subscriptions
  • Strengths: Free-form and auto layouts; Style sheets; Checkboxes and links.

Where it falls short

The pages we read describe sharing as file export, for example to PDF, and list no live co-editing. Prices did not appear in what we fetched, and buying for each platform separately adds up for someone using four devices.

Wrong for

A team that wants shared live maps with comments and several editors working at once.

#9 MindNode

Mind mapping built only for Apple platforms · Austria · mindnode.com

Apple only outlining low price

MindNode ranks ninth for reach, not quality. It is built exclusively for Apple devices by a small Austrian team that has worked on this one product since 2008. The app is free to use, and MindNode Plus at $2.99 per month or $24.99 per year adds outlining, themes, notes and tasks, images and stickers, collaboration, Apple Intelligence and an Apple Watch app.

  • Pricing: Per user / month. Free app, MindNode Plus at $2.99 per month or $24.99 per year. Free plan: free plan.
  • Best for: Mac and iPhone users
  • Strengths: Mac, iPhone, iPad, Vision Pro and Watch; Outlining; Themes and styling.

Where it falls short

It does not run on Windows, Android or in a browser, so a mixed team cannot share a workspace. The free tier leaves out outlining, themes and collaboration.

Wrong for

Any team with Windows or Android users, or one that needs admin controls.

Visit MindNode →

#10 Whimsical

Boards for mind maps, flowcharts and wireframes · United States · whimsical.com

boards flowcharts AI

Whimsical is tenth because mind maps are one tool in a wider workspace here. Its mind map page promises automatic layouts and colors, keyboard shortcuts, multiplayer editing, templates, comments and embeds in other Whimsical files, plus an AI mind map generator.

  • Pricing: Per editor / month. Free with 50 board objects a month, Pro at $10 per editor per month, viewers free. Free plan: free plan.
  • Best for: Product teams who map and sketch
  • Strengths: Mind maps; Flowcharts; Wireframes.

Where it falls short

Free use runs out fast: 50 board objects is a few maps, and exports carry a watermark. A mind map is less configurable than in dedicated tools, with no outline mode listed on the page we read.

Wrong for

A student who needs many free maps, or someone who wants an outliner view next to the map.

Visit Whimsical →

#11 Scapple

Freeform notes joined by lines, for writers · United Kingdom · literatureandlatte.com

desktop freeform writers

Scapple is eleventh because its idea is deliberately different: a virtual sheet of paper where any note can sit anywhere and be joined to any other, with no central topic and no forced hierarchy. Notes can be stacked, grouped with background shapes and dragged into Scrivener, and you can export or print the result.

  • Pricing: One-time per platform. Standard and educational licences per platform; 30-day trial; price did not render. Free plan: free trial.
  • Best for: Authors sketching ideas before drafting
  • Strengths: Notes anywhere on the page; Connections by drag and drop; Background shapes.

Where it falls short

It is not a tree-based mind mapper, so it offers no branch folding, outline view or tasks, and the pages we read mention no sharing or cloud sync. Each licence covers one platform, and major versions may be paid upgrades.

Wrong for

Teams, project planners and anyone who needs structured branches or collaboration.

Visit Scapple →

What this category is

Mind mapping software draws a central topic with branches that split into sub-topics, so a person can capture, group and rearrange ideas on one screen. Most products add notes, icons, links, task markers, presentation mode and sharing.

How we ranked these

Five tests, applied to every product. The order is not the tests alone: places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them, and the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order.

  • Setup: From a blank center node to a map you can hand over.
  • The real price: Map caps, seats and the subscription question.
  • Getting your data out: What a map becomes outside the tool.
  • Independence from the vendor: Who owns it and where it runs.
  • Who it's for: Studying, writing, workshops and project planning.

What the data says about this market

Counted from the eleven products on this page, seven vendors are headquartered in Europe: three in the United Kingdom (Coggle, Ayoa and Scapple), and one each in Germany (MindMeister), Romania (Mindomo), the Netherlands (SimpleMind) and Austria (MindNode). Two are American (Miro and Whimsical), one is Canadian (MindManager, on the strength of the Corel name on its pages) and one is Singaporean (Xmind). A category that costs little to enter and is difficult to dominate has produced long-running independent products, with MindNode dating its first release to 2008 and Literature and Latte founded in 2006.

How to choose

  1. Decide whether you map alone or with others. Write down who edits and who only reads.
  2. Test one real map for limits and exit. Take a topic you must map this month, with at least eighty nodes, notes and a few links, and build it in two or three finalists.
  3. Match the tool to the work that follows the map. A map is rarely the final product.

Questions and answers

What is the best mind mapping software in 2026?

MindMeister ranks first of 11, best for small teams mapping together. Xmind is second (solo professionals and consultants) and Mindomo third (teams switching mapping tools). Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands, wherever the category has them.

Is there a good free mind mapping tool?

Yes, with limits. MindMeister, Coggle and Mindomo give three maps, Xmind ten online maps, Ayoa ten, and MindNode's base app is free on Apple devices.

Is it better to pay once or subscribe?

SimpleMind sells a single purchase per platform and Scapple sells a licence per operating system, while MindMeister, Xmind, Mindomo, Coggle, Ayoa, Whimsical and Miro charge monthly or yearly.

Can I collaborate on a mind map in real time?

Several products can. Coggle's free plan lists real-time collaboration, MindMeister lists unlimited collaborators on its free plan, Xmind includes real-time collaboration in Premium, and Miro and Whimsical are collaboration-first boards. SimpleMind and Scapple describe sharing mostly as file export.

Which mind mapping software works offline?

Installed programs work without a connection: Xmind on desktop, MindManager Professional on Windows and Mac, SimpleMind, Scapple and MindNode. Browser products such as MindMeister, Coggle, Mindomo, Miro and Whimsical need a connection to the vendor.

Can I move my maps from one program to another?

Partly. Mindomo is the strongest on this point, listing 14 import formats that include MindManager, MindMeister, XMind, SimpleMind and Freemind files. Coggle imports and exports .mm and text.

Is mind mapping software useful for people with dyslexia or ADHD?

Some buyers find it so, because a map shows relationships that a page of text hides.

Do I need mind mapping software if I already use Miro or a whiteboard?

Often not, if you map occasionally. Miro and Whimsical both offer mind maps with AI drafting, and the board is useful when the map is one step in a larger workshop.

What do AI features do in mind mapping tools?

Vendors describe AI that drafts a map from a prompt, expands a branch, or summarizes a document into a map. MindMeister, Xmind, Mindomo, Whimsical, Miro and MindNode Plus all mention such features.

Are mind mapping tools safe for confidential material?

Check three things in writing: where the data is hosted, which certifications the vendor claims, and whether you can export everything yourself.

How many people can use one map at once, and what do viewers cost?

The pages we read do not publish a concurrent-editor limit for most products. Viewer treatment differs: Whimsical says viewers are always free, MindMeister's free plan allows unlimited collaborators, and Mindomo shares maps with free users without using up their quota.
