Teams look past Freshdesk when AI sessions are billed on top of the seat price, when audit logs and routing sit on the top tier, or when they want a free plan. Most move to Zendesk or Help Scout for a like-for-like swap, to Zoho Desk or HubSpot for a free entry point, and to Zammad for open source.

What each alternative does differently
1. Zendesk
The most complete help desk suite, priced for scale · United States
The nearest rival in scope, covering tickets, messaging and AI agents in one suite. Five automated resolutions per agent a month are included on the lower Suite tiers, and extra ones are billed. Copilot is a separate per-agent add-on, so the complete feature set costs more than a Freshdesk tier.
Switch from Freshdesk if you want the broadest marketplace and one suite for tickets, messaging and AI.
Pricing: Per agent per month on published Suite tiers, with AI agent resolutions billed beyond a small monthly allowance per agent, and Copilot, workforce management and quality tools sold as add-ons. (free trial)

2. Help Scout
Email-first help desk that hides the ticket machinery · United States
A shared-inbox style tool, lighter than a full ticketing suite. The free plan covers five users, one Inbox and one Docs site, while Standard caps at 25 users and two Inboxes. Phone arrives through an integration, and AI Answers is charged per resolution.
Switch from Freshdesk if your support is mostly email and you want a free plan for a small team.
Pricing: Free plan for five users and 100 contacts a month, then per-user tiers from about $25 a month, with AI Answers billed at $0.75 per resolution. (free plan)

3. Zoho Desk
Low-cost ticketing tied into the Zoho suite · India

Pricing renders in local currency, which makes comparison a manual step.
Switch from Freshdesk if you want a free entry edition and a similar tier structure to Freshdesk.
Pricing: Free plan for a few agents, then low per-agent tiers billed annually, well under Zendesk at every level. (free plan)

Questions and answers
Can I export all my tickets from Freshdesk?
Yes, an account admin can use the Export Account API with a date range and resources such as tickets, notes, attachments, contacts and companies. The output format is JSON. The ordinary ticket list endpoint stops at 30,000 tickets per query, so use the export for a full archive.
How long do I have to export after I close the account?
14 days from the effective date of closure, according to the Freshworks terms. After that Freshworks may keep the data for up to three months before deleting it, and deleted data cannot be recovered. Export before you close, not after.
How much notice does Freshdesk need to cancel?
At least 30 days before the subscription term ends, in writing. Without it the plan renews at the same user count for a period equal to the previous term. The same notice covers a downgrade, so check your order form for anything stricter.
Does Freshdesk have a free plan?
No, the pricing page lists Growth at $19, Pro at $55 and Enterprise at $89 per agent per month billed annually, plus a 14-day trial of Enterprise. Alternatives with a free tier include Help Scout (five users), Zoho Desk (three users) and HubSpot Service Hub (two users).
What do Freshdesk AI Agent sessions cost?
The first 500 sessions are included on every plan, and further sessions are sold at $49 per 100. A session is a unique interaction between an end user and an AI Agent, counted within a 72-hour window for email agents.
Is the Freshdesk API rate limited during a migration?
Yes, limits are set per plan and apply to the whole account, not per agent. Trial accounts default to 50 calls a minute, and paid plans are listed at 3,000 or 5,000 calls an hour. Large exports should use the account export rather than paging through tickets.
