Samsara alternatives: 11 compared

Fleets leave Samsara over contract length, hardware that is bound to the license, and a bundle larger than the job needs. Most go to another all-in-one telematics platform such as Motive or Geotab, or to a cheaper camera and tracker package such as Azuga or Linxup.

Short answer: The closest replacements for Samsara in our fleet management software ranking are Motive, Geotab and Verizon Connect. Choose Motive if you want the same all-in-one telematics and camera scope from another quote-based vendor. All 11 alternatives below are ranked products from Best Fleet Management Software in 2026, and each says where it differs from Samsara and when Samsara is still the better choice.

Visibility in our rankings can be paid for. Payment moves a vendor's position within the shortlist; it never adds a vendor, and it never changes a word of the review or of this page. The first three alternatives go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow in their ranked order. Why buyers look past Samsara

  1. The contract renews itself

Samsara's terms renew an order automatically unless you cancel in writing at least 30 days before the license expires. A renewal can run for the longest of one year, the previous term, or a period that aligns with other orders. The calendar matters more than the price list.

  2. Hardware and license are tied together

Samsara's warranty policy describes hardware that needs a valid license to function, and that hardware is covered only while the license is kept. The gateway and cameras are therefore a commitment to the platform, not an asset you can point at another vendor.

  3. No public price to compare against

The pricing page asks for your fleet size and offers a quote, not a rate card. Buyers cannot benchmark a renewal against a published number, and the product list is long. A competing quote is the practical way to test it.

When Samsara is still the right choice

Stay with Samsara if you run several hundred vehicles with a safety manager and use the cameras, coaching and equipment tracking together. The single login for vehicles, trailers and heavy equipment, the open API and the app marketplace are hard to match in a package from a smaller vendor, and a switch means replacing every device in the fleet.

What to expect when you switch from Samsara

  1. Plan around the license date

Renewal is automatic unless you give written notice at least 30 days before the license expires, and Samsara may renew up to 90 days after expiry. Put that date on the calendar before you request any competing quote, and ask the new vendor to start billing only after the last Samsara term ends. Overlap is paid twice.

  2. Export before the license ends

Samsara's terms let you export customer data during the term through the dashboard or the API, and warn that some information may not be exportable. Data may be deleted after a non-renewal. Pull vehicle, driver, ELD and report data first, then confirm the new vendor can import it.

  3. Replace the hardware, not just the software

Because the Samsara gateway and cameras need a valid license to function, a new vendor means new devices in every vehicle. Budget installer time, driver retraining and a short parallel run on a few trucks, so that ELD records and safety coaching do not lapse.

Questions and answers

Can I export my data from Samsara when I leave?

Yes, during the term you can export customer data through the Samsara dashboard or API. The terms also say some information may not be exportable. Run exports of vehicles, drivers and logs well before the license date, because data may be deleted after a non-renewal.

How much notice does Samsara need to cancel?

Written notice of at least 30 days before the license expiration date stops the automatic renewal. Without that notice, Samsara may renew the order at its discretion, and the terms allow this up to 90 days after expiry. Check your own order form, because it can change these terms.

How long is the Samsara renewal term?

A renewal runs for up to the longest of one year, the previous term, or a period that aligns with your other orders. Samsara's master terms state this. A three-year contract can therefore renew for another three years if you miss the window.

Does Samsara hardware work with another vendor?

Samsara does not say it does, and its warranty policy describes hardware that needs a valid license to function. Plan to replace the gateway and cameras. Ask the new vendor whether it offers installation support for a vehicle-by-vehicle swap.

Can I keep ELD compliance during the switch?

Yes, if you overlap the two systems for a short period. Samsara's Vehicle Gateway is an FMCSA-registered ELD in the US, so drivers must move to the new vendor's registered ELD. Export the Samsara logs before the license ends.

Is there a public price for Samsara to compare?

No. The pricing page asks for your fleet size and leads to a quote. Collect at least two competing quotes with the same vehicle count, camera scope and contract length, and compare the total over the full term.
