1Password alternatives: 11 compared

Teams look past 1Password when the small-team pack runs out at twenty seats, when identity-provider integrations and SSO sit on a per-user plan priced well above the pack, or when they want self-hosting or a different jurisdiction. Most go to Bitwarden or Proton Pass, or to Keeper for admin depth.

Short answer: The closest replacements for 1Password in our business password managers ranking are Bitwarden, Proton Pass and Keeper. Choose Bitwarden if you want a lower per-user price and an option to self-host on Enterprise. All 11 alternatives below are ranked products from Best Business Password Managers in 2026, and each says where it differs from 1Password and when 1Password is still the better choice.

Visibility in our rankings can be paid for. Payment moves a vendor's position within the shortlist; it never adds a vendor, and it never changes a word of the review or of this page. How it works: placement disclosure · editorial process.

1Password at a glance

  • Headquarters: Canada
  • Pricing model: Per user / month
  • Pricing: Published pricing: a flat Teams Starter Pack for small teams, then per-user Business and quote-based Enterprise plans; extended access management sold separately.
  • Free option: Free trial
  • Built for: Tech companies with Okta or Entra
  • Wrong for: Organizations that must hold their own vault server or need the lowest cost per seat. Bitwarden or Passbolt fit those requirements; 1Password cannot.
  • Place in our ranking: #4 of 12

Facts from our business password managers ranking, last checked October 8, 2026.

Why buyers look past 1Password

  1. The Starter Pack has a ceiling

The Teams Starter Pack costs $2.49 per user with a ten-user minimum and room for ten more seats, so twenty at most. Past that, 1Password Business is $8.99 per user, billed yearly. The jump is the most common trigger for a price comparison.

  2. Identity integrations start on Business

The Okta, Entra ID, OneLogin and Duo integrations are listed under Business, along with SSO, user and group provisioning and SIEM streaming. The Starter Pack lists none of them. Enterprise adds products sold on quotes, such as SaaS Manager, Privileged Access and Device Trust.

  3. No self-hosted option

1Password is a hosted service operated by AgileBits Inc., with an office in Toronto, Canada. Its pricing pages list no self-hosted edition. Buyers who must keep the vault on their own servers, or want an open-source server, look elsewhere.

When 1Password is still the right choice

Stay with 1Password if your team fits the Starter Pack or is already on Business, and you value the Secret Key model and its independently audited SOC 2 Type II certification. It also fits you if you rely on its developer tools, such as SSH key signing, Git commit signing, a command line tool and SDKs, and do not need a self-hosted server.

What to expect when you switch from 1Password

  1. Export before you cancel

In 1Password 8 you can export to the .1pux format or CSV. CSV carries only a limited set of fields and exports only Login and Password items. The files are unencrypted, so store them briefly and delete them. Check business vault export permissions with your owner.

  2. Attachments, passkeys and shared vaults

Plan for items that CSV cannot carry, such as documents, secure notes and passkeys. On iOS, 1Password exports through the Credential Exchange standard, which can include passkeys, but it needs iOS or iPadOS 26. Rebuild shared vault permissions by hand in the new tool.

  3. Re-enroll people one team at a time

Sign-in changes for everyone: the Secret Key stops applying and users need the new vault's master password or SSO flow. Move one group first, with the browser extension and mobile app, then retire the 1Password accounts once the group has stopped opening them.

Questions and answers

Which export formats does 1Password support?

1Password 8 exports to the unencrypted .1pux format or to CSV. The CSV format supports a limited set of fields and only Login and Password items, so a full move needs .1pux or a tool that reads it.

Are 1Password exports encrypted?

No, exported data files are stored in plaintext, and 1Password warns that anyone with the file can read your passwords. Do not email or store them online, and delete them as soon as the import is done.

How many users can the Teams Starter Pack have?

Up to twenty: it needs ten users minimum and allows up to ten additional seats at per-member pricing. A larger team moves to Business, which is priced per user with a one-user minimum.

Does 1Password offer a self-hosted version?

Its pricing pages list none. Business and Enterprise are hosted by 1Password. Bitwarden Enterprise, Passbolt, Devolutions Server and RoboForm Enterprise list self-hosted options on their own pages.

Which alternatives bundle a personal plan for employees?

Keeper Business, Bitwarden Enterprise and LastPass Business each list a free family or personal plan for employees. 1Password also lists a free Families plan for each user on its business plans, so check what a switch would remove.

Does moving off 1Password need a new SSO setup?

Yes, the identity provider connection is configured per product. 1Password lists Okta, Entra ID, OneLogin and Duo on Business; alternatives list their own, such as Dashlane with Entra ID, Okta and Duo or Passbolt with Microsoft, Google and OpenID.
