Bitwarden alternatives: 11 compared

Teams look past Bitwarden when they need single sign-on or policy enforcement without moving to its Enterprise tier, when they want a self-hosted vault that does not depend on a cloud subscription, or when they want a different admin console. Most go to Proton Pass or Keeper for a managed service, or to Passbolt for self-hosting.

Short answer: The closest replacements for Bitwarden in our business password managers ranking are Proton Pass, Keeper and 1Password. Choose Proton Pass if you want SSO and SCIM in a lower business tier and may already use Proton for mail. All 11 alternatives below are ranked products from Best Business Password Managers in 2026, and each says where it differs from Bitwarden and when Bitwarden is still the better choice.

Visibility in our rankings can be paid for. Payment moves a vendor's position within the shortlist; it never adds a vendor, and it never changes a word of the review or of this page. How it works: placement disclosure · editorial process.

Why buyers look past Bitwarden

  1. SSO and policies sit on the top tier

Bitwarden's plan comparison shows Login with SSO, key connector, enterprise policies, account recovery and the self-host option as Enterprise-only. Teams keeps event logs, user groups, an API and directory sync, so a company that needs SSO enforcement has to move up a tier.

  2. Self-hosting is tied to a cloud subscription

Bitwarden's self-hosting guide says an organization first needs a subscription on a cloud server, then a license file is uploaded to the self-hosted instance. Only Families and Enterprise organizations can be imported. Teams that want a vault with no vendor billing link look elsewhere.

  3. Open source with a commercial layer

Bitwarden's license FAQ puts clients under GPL 3.0 and the server under AGPL 3.0. Code in the server's bitwarden_license directory is source-available and requires a paid subscription for production use. Buyers who want an unconditional open-source licence read that carefully.

4. Dashlane

Business password manager built around credential risk visibility · United States

Switch from Bitwarden if you want credential-risk alerts and phishing detection on top of the vault.

Pricing: Password Management plan published per user, billed annually, with a 14-day trial; the Credential Protection package and Omnix Enterprise are sold through sales. (free trial)

5. NordPass

Straightforward business vault from the NordVPN group · Netherlands

Sold as a 10-user Teams pack, Business and Enterprise with a five-user minimum. Entra ID and Okta provisioning and the Splunk and Sentinel integrations are Enterprise-only, as SSO is on Bitwarden. Its site blocked automated fetches, so we read this from the category file.

Switch from Bitwarden if you want a hosted vault with long-term billing options and no server to run.

Pricing: Published per-user Teams (10-user pack), Business and Enterprise (five-user minimum) plans, billed monthly or on discounted one- and two-year terms; Entra ID and Okta SSO and provisioning and the Splunk and Sentinel integrations are Enterprise-only. (free trial)

6. Passbolt

Open-source, team-first password manager for self-hosting · Luxembourg

Built for self-hosting. The Community Edition is AGPL 3 with unlimited users, and the Pro Edition adds LDAP provisioning, SSO with Microsoft, Google and OpenID, account recovery and an activity log, with a ten-user minimum. It is team-focused, not a consumer vault.

Switch from Bitwarden if you want a vault you host yourself with no cloud licence dependency.

Pricing: Free open-source Community Edition; paid Pro and Cloud editions priced per user with published tiers. (open source)

7. RoboForm

Veteran password manager known for form filling · United States

Pricing: Published per-user business pricing billed annually, with volume discounts; free plan for individuals. (free trial)

IT-focused vault tied to Remote Desktop Manager · Canada

Connects to a Devolutions workspace that is either cloud or self-hosted, and sits beside privileged access and remote access products. A Starter Pack halves the price for teams of five. It suits IT teams that also manage remote sessions, not a simple shared-login vault.

Switch from Bitwarden if you are an IT team that also needs remote connections and privileged access in one vendor.

Pricing: Sold in per-user packages billed annually: workforce password management at a published $3 per user per month on a Devolutions Cloud or self-hosted Devolutions Server workspace, with Remote Desktop Manager from the $30 package. (free trial)

MSP-distributed password manager for small clients · United States

When Bitwarden is still the right choice

Stay with Bitwarden if you need an open-source vault with a low per-user price, if Enterprise-tier SSO and policies fit your budget, and if self-hosting through a license file suits your team. Staying is also sensible when your vault is small, since the free organization shares items between two users and migration effort would outweigh any saving.

What to expect when you switch from Bitwarden

  1. Export carries more than a CSV

Bitwarden exports as .json, .csv, encrypted .json, or a .zip with attachments for individual vaults only. Only .json includes cards, identities, passkeys and SSH keys, and no format includes trash items or Sends. Export as .json, not .csv, before you leave.

  2. Organization data needs an admin

Only admins, owners and some custom roles can export organization items, and members with Manage collection permission can export their collections. Plan the export with an owner, and rebuild Sends and attachments by hand in the new tool, as Bitwarden's own import guide advises.

  3. Keep the old org alive briefly

After cancellation Bitwarden keeps the account and organization, but paid features stop at the end of the billing cycle. Keep the subscription until staff have confirmed logins in the new tool, because a disabled cloud organization has only a seven day grace period.

Questions and answers

Can I export everything from Bitwarden when I leave?

Almost everything: .json and encrypted .json exports include logins, cards, identities, passkeys and SSH keys. Trash items and Sends are not in any format, and attachments only travel in the individual .zip export.

Which file format should I choose for a Bitwarden export?

Choose the .json export. Bitwarden's help page says only .json includes cards, identities, passkeys and SSH keys, and it recommends the encrypted .json option for the most complete export. CSV is plaintext and omits those item types.

Who can export organization data from Bitwarden?

Admins and owners, plus some custom roles. Members with the Manage collection permission can export data from collections they can reach, but individual vault exports never include organization-owned data, so take both.

What happens to my vault when I cancel Bitwarden?

The account or organization is not deleted, and paid features stop at the end of the billing cycle. Refunds are possible for subscriptions under 30 days old. Cancel only after the new tool is in use.

Can I move to a self-hosted tool and keep Bitwarden's EU data region?

Not as a single step: Bitwarden's US and EU server regions are separate and an account exists only in the region where it was created. Treat a move to a self-hosted vault as a fresh import from an export file.

Is Bitwarden's Enterprise self-host option a standalone product?

No. The self-hosting guide requires a cloud subscription first and a license file uploaded to your server, with a 60 day grace period for self-hosted organizations after expiry, against seven days for cloud.
