Proton Pass is a younger business product from a Geneva-based privacy company, with open-source, audited apps and email aliases built in. 1Password, based in Toronto, is the established one, with deep developer tooling and identity-provider integration that software companies rely on. Small privacy-minded teams, especially those on Proton Mail, fit the first; tech companies running Okta or Entra ID fit the second.

you are a small team that wants a Swiss vendor with open-source apps, already uses Proton Mail or would take the Workspace bundle, and can live with simpler admin controls.

Where they differ

Admin layer and identity provider support

1Password Business has 13 vault permissions, custom groups, team policies, an audit log, SSO with Okta, Entra ID, OneLogin, JumpCloud and others, and SCIM provisioning through its SCIM bridge. Proton Pass Professional now lists SSO, SCIM, enterprise policies, detailed activity logs and SIEM integration. Proton has closed much of the gap on paper, but 1Password's admin layer is more granular and longer proven.

Jurisdiction, open code and security design

Proton is based in Geneva, its Pass apps are open source and were audited by Cure53, and it encrypts web addresses and metadata as well as passwords. 1Password is based in Toronto and adds a Secret Key created on the device and never sent to the company, so stolen server data cannot be brute-forced with a password alone. Which weighs more depends on your threat model.

Tooling for developers

Both now cover the basics: Proton Pass Professional includes a command-line interface and an SSH agent. 1Password goes further, with SSH key and Git commit signing, shell plugins for tools such as aws and gh, SDKs in Go, JavaScript and Python, service accounts, a self-hosted Connect server and CI/CD integrations. For an engineering team standardizing on one vault, 1Password has the deeper kit.

Aliases and the surrounding suite

Proton Pass business plans include unlimited hide-my-email aliases, so staff can register on vendor sites without exposing a real address. Pass also comes in Proton's Workspace bundles with Mail, Calendar, Drive and VPN, and Proton Free gives individuals unlimited logins and devices plus 10 aliases. 1Password's extra for business users is a free Families membership. For bundle value, Proton wins.

When neither fits

Neither fits a regulated mid-sized firm that needs the most granular role-based policies and compliance reporting, or one that wants to run its vault on its own server. Keeper has the deepest policy engine and reporting in the category, and Bitwarden Enterprise includes a server you can host yourself.

Is Proton Pass mature enough to replace 1Password in a business?

For a small team with simple sharing needs, yes, and Professional now adds SSO, SCIM, policies, activity logs and SIEM integration. For a mid-sized firm it is still a step down in our assessment, with fewer policy options and simpler reporting. Importing a large, deeply nested folder structure also needs cleanup.

Do Proton Pass and 1Password both support SSO?

Yes, on the right plan. Proton Pass puts SSO and SCIM in Pass Professional, not Essentials. 1Password Business connects to identity providers including Okta, Entra ID, OneLogin and JumpCloud for sign-in and unlock, with SCIM provisioning through its bridge. Make sure your identity provider is supported by Proton before committing.

Which is more private, Proton Pass or 1Password?

They make different cases. Proton Pass offers Swiss jurisdiction, open-source apps audited by Cure53 and end-to-end encryption that also covers web addresses and metadata. 1Password offers a Secret Key made on the device and never sent to the company, so copied server data cannot be unlocked with the account password alone.

What does 1Password cost compared with Proton Pass?
