Proton Pass is a young business product from a Swiss privacy company, with open-source apps and email aliases built in. 1Password is the mature one, with developer tooling and identity-provider integration that software companies rely on. Small privacy-minded teams, especially those on Proton Mail, fit the first; tech companies with Okta or Entra fit the second.

Which one to choose
Choose Proton Pass if
you are a small team that wants a Swiss vendor with open-source apps, already uses Proton Mail or would take the suite, and can live with simpler admin controls.

Where they differ
Admin layer and identity provider support
1Password is built for companies already on Okta or Entra, with SSO unlock and SCIM through a bridge or hosted option. Proton Pass added organization management only recently: it has SSO, policies and activity logs, but fewer policy options, simpler reporting, narrower directory provisioning and fewer identity provider integrations. For a firm with real provisioning needs, 1Password is the safer pick today.

Jurisdiction, open code and security design
Proton Pass is headquartered in Switzerland, its apps are open source and audited, and it suits a company that wants its vendor outside US jurisdiction. 1Password is headquartered in Canada and relies on a Secret Key design, which makes a stolen server database useless without a value held on devices. Neither offers self-hosting. Which argument weighs more depends on your threat model.

Tooling for developers
1Password includes a developer CLI, an SSH agent and secret references in config files, and engineering teams standardize on it for that reason. Proton Pass's feature list centers on shared vaults, aliases, 2FA codes and passkeys; our data records no developer tooling for it, which is not proof it has none. On the evidence available, engineers are better served by 1Password.

Proton Pass has hide-my-email aliases, so staff can register on vendor sites without exposing a real address, which cuts spam and phishing aimed at employees. It is also bundled into Proton Business Suite and has a generous free plan for individuals. 1Password sells extended access management separately and prices Business above the budget options. For bundle value, Proton wins.

Neither fits a regulated mid-sized firm that needs granular role-based policies and compliance reporting, or one that must host its own vault. Keeper has the deepest policy engine and reporting in the category, and Bitwarden adds an open-source server you can run yourself.

Is Proton Pass mature enough to replace 1Password in a business?
For a small team with simple sharing needs, yes. For a mid-sized firm it is a step down on the admin side: fewer policies, simpler reporting and narrower directory provisioning. Importing a large, deeply nested folder structure also needs cleanup, and business support is mostly ticket-based.
Do Proton Pass and 1Password both support SSO?
Yes. Proton Pass business plans have added SSO alongside policies and logs, and 1Password offers unlock with SSO plus SCIM through a bridge you deploy or a hosted option. The difference is breadth: Proton Pass integrates with fewer identity providers than the mature players.
Which is more private, Proton Pass or 1Password?
They make different cases. Proton Pass offers Swiss jurisdiction and open-source, audited apps. 1Password offers a Secret Key stored only on devices, so a copied server database cannot be unlocked alone. Neither can be self-hosted, so in both cases the vault sits in the vendor's cloud.
