Teams look past Tailscale when seats outgrow the Personal plan, when features such as flow logs and just-in-time access sit on the $18 Premium tier, or when they want a hosted gateway with a fixed address instead of a mesh. Most move to GoodAccess or Twingate, or to a self-hosted OpenVPN Access Server.
Vendors can pay for more visibility on this website, for example a higher place in a ranking or more room on a page. Commercial relationships can also affect which products we feature and how prominently. Every vendor link is marked the same, whatever the arrangement behind it. The first three alternatives
go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the
established names follow in their ranked order. How it works:

What each alternative does differently
1. GoodAccess
Czech Republic
A cloud-hosted business VPN built around dedicated gateways, each with its own static IP to whitelist. Essential is $7 per user per month billed annually, with a five-user minimum, plus $49 a month per gateway. Premium at $11 adds zero trust access control. A 14-day trial needs no card.
Switch from Tailscale if you want a hosted gateway with a fixed IP address and a printed price.

2. Twingate
United States
Zero trust access that replaces a VPN for private resources, with a free Starter plan for up to 5 users. Teams costs $5 per user per month for up to 100 users, and Business $10 for up to 500, with IdP provisioning. Enterprise is quoted and adds static IP as an add-on.
Switch from Tailscale if you want a lower seat price and a free tier for a very small group.

3. OpenVPN Access Server
United States
A VPN server you install on your own cloud, hardware or data center. The permanent free tier allows 2 simultaneous connections, and Growth is $7 per connection per month on annual billing, not per named user. Enterprise and IoT are quoted. You carry the hosting and upkeep yourself.
Switch from Tailscale if you want to host the VPN yourself and pay by simultaneous connection.

4. Cloudflare Zero Trust
United States
Part of Cloudflare One, a larger SASE platform. Its plans page offers a free plan for a proof of concept, but the paid figures did not render in the page we fetched. Resources connect through outbound-only tunnels, so no public IP is exposed. The scope is wider than a plain VPN.
Switch from Tailscale if you want secure access folded into a wider web security platform and can start on a free plan.

5. ScribeForce (Windscribe)
Canada
Windscribe's team product: a plain consumer-style VPN with every Pro feature, one shared bill and a single management panel, at $5.00 per seat per month. Static IPs are shared across members. Its page lists no per-resource access rules, so it reads as a traffic tunnel more than a segmentation tool.
Switch from Tailscale if you only need an encrypted tunnel for a small team and one bill.

6. Surfshark for Teams
Netherlands
A consumer security bundle sold to companies through an offer form, not a checkout. Starter is from $5.90 per user per month, One from $6.90 and One+ from $9.40, on a one-year plan with a five-license minimum. It adds antivirus and an alternative-identity tool, not network access control.
Switch from Tailscale if you want a bundled privacy suite for staff and not a company network.

7. ExpressVPN for Teams
British Virgin Islands
A per-license team VPN with a central admin console to assign and reassign licenses. For 5 to 9 licenses the page shows $9.74 per license per month, $4.68 on a 12-month plan and $3.05 on 2 years, and a Dedicated IP is $390 a year per location. A 30-day money-back guarantee applies.
Switch from Tailscale if you want a plain team VPN with printed volume prices and a refund window.

8. Zscaler Private Access
United States
Zscaler's zero trust network access service, sold to connect users to private applications without a VPN, including third parties on unmanaged devices. The product page prints no price and sends visitors to a demo request. It is built for large rollouts, not for a ten-person team.
Switch from Tailscale if you run a large estate and will go through a vendor sales process.

9. Netskope One Private Access
United States
Netskope's ZTNA product, positioned as a full replacement for VPN and network access control. A Local Broker extends access to on-premises and OT networks, and the vendor offers a free test drive. No price is printed on the product page, so budget starts with a sales conversation.
Switch from Tailscale if you need private access that also reaches on-premises and OT systems.

10. Cisco Secure Access
United States
A security service edge platform from Cisco combining secure web access, ZTNA and VPN as a service (VPNaaS) in one console and one client. VPNaaS covers applications that ZTNA cannot reach. The page lists no price, so the cost comes from a Cisco partner quote. It suits existing Cisco estates.
Switch from Tailscale if your network and security stack is already Cisco and you want one agent.

11. Check Point SASE Platform
Israel
Check Point's SASE platform, formerly Harmony SASE, bundling internet security, private access with a remote access VPN, and SaaS security behind one cloud dashboard. It also offers full-mesh private access between sites. The page shows no rate card, and the bundle is aimed at larger firms.
Switch from Tailscale if you want site-to-site and remote access under one security vendor.

Questions and answers
Is Tailscale free for a company?
Only for very small groups. The Personal plan is free forever for up to 6 users, and the paid Standard plan starts at $8 per user per month with unlimited users. Check the plan terms of use before putting company work on the free tier.
What does Tailscale cost per user?
Standard costs $8 per user per month and Premium $18 per user per month. Enterprise is custom, with pay by invoice and a custom MSA. The pricing page lists these three paid tiers and the free Personal plan.
Can I take my Tailscale access rules with me?
Not as a file another product reads, but the policy is plain JSON that you can use as a checklist. Tailscale describes its ACL policy as JSON that names users, groups or tags, destinations and ports. Recreate each rule in the new tool's format.
Do alternatives to Tailscale need a firewall change?
Often yes, unlike Tailscale. Tailscale states that its connections work across firewalls without port forwarding. A self-hosted OpenVPN Access Server needs its own host and open ports, while a hosted gateway or tunnel service shifts that work to the vendor.
Which Tailscale feature is hardest to replace?
The peer-to-peer mesh. Tailscale connects devices directly, which it says lowers latency, while a gateway VPN sends traffic through a central point. If your users reach each other's machines, test that path with a trial before you commit.
Is there a cheaper Tailscale alternative at five users?
Yes, on printed prices. Twingate Teams is $5 per user per month and its Starter plan is free for up to 5 users. GoodAccess Essential is $7 per user per month plus $49 a month per gateway, so its total depends on the gateway count.
Does leaving Tailscale mean losing SSH access?
Tailscale SSH is a Tailscale feature, so it stops with your tailnet. Advanced Tailscale SSH is listed under Premium. Before you leave, make sure normal SSH keys and a bastion or other access path are in place for every server your team uses.
