1Password vs LastPass

1Password is the vault that staff and developers like to use, with a clean app, developer tools in both business plans and a published price. LastPass has comparable admin features and a long list of policies, but carries the trust cost of its 2022 breach. For most companies choosing today, 1Password is the safer default and LastPass is mainly relevant to existing customers.

Where they differ

Vendor trust after a breach

In 2022 a LastPass attacker used a breached development environment to take encrypted vault backups together with unencrypted site URLs, and encrypted data taken that way can be attacked offline indefinitely. Disclosure came in stages and understated the reach at first. LastPass has since hardened its systems and become independent of GoTo, but an auditor will ask about it. 1Password carries no equivalent incident in our category notes.

Edge: 1Password

Developer tools in the vault

1Password lists a CLI, SDKs, SSH key signing and Git commit signing in the Teams Starter Pack and Business plans. The LastPass pages we fetched described admin policy and directory features and not developer tooling, so we could not verify an equivalent. For a software company, 1Password is the clearer option.

Edge: 1Password

Admin controls for IT

LastPass is competitive here: more than 100 policies on Business, directory integrations, and on Business Max a SaaS monitoring tool for shadow IT. 1Password Business adds identity provider integrations with Okta, Entra ID, OneLogin and Duo, custom policies and reporting, though our category notes call its admin reporting thinner than Keeper's. On breadth of policies, LastPass edges ahead.

Edge: LastPass

How the plans are tiered

1Password publishes $2.49 per user per month billed yearly for the Teams Starter Pack, capped at 20 users with a 10-user minimum, and $8.99 for Business. The LastPass page we fetched showed its Teams, Business and Business Max prices only as unfilled placeholders, so we cannot compare prices. LastPass Teams is capped at 50 users and 25 policies, and unlimited SSO apps and SaaS monitoring need Business Max.

Edge: even

Self-hosting

Neither product offers a self-hosted vault in the sources we checked, so the vault lives in the vendor's cloud with both. 1Password's Secret Key design means a stolen server database is useless without a second value kept on devices. That does not change the cloud-only answer.

Edge: even

Tally: 1Password 2, LastPass 1, even 2.

When neither fits

Neither fits an organization that must run the vault on its own server or needs the lowest cost per seat. Bitwarden has a self-hosted option, and Passbolt suits an IT team that wants on-premises control and can run a server.

See Bitwarden and Passbolt among the 12 products in Best Business Password Managers in 2026.

Questions and answers

Is LastPass still safe to use for business?

Its features are competitive, and the company has hardened its systems since the 2022 incident. Even so, encrypted vault backups taken then can be attacked offline, so auditors often ask. For a first-time purchase we rank 1Password well above it.

How much does 1Password Business cost?

The page we fetched lists the Teams Starter Pack at $2.49 per user per month billed yearly, for 10 to 20 users, and Business at $8.99 per user per month billed yearly. Both offer a 14-day free trial. Enterprise is quoted.

Does LastPass have a free trial for business?

The pricing page we fetched listed a 14-day trial for Teams, Business and Business Max. It showed the prices themselves as unfilled placeholders, so check the current figures with the vendor.

Which plan do you need for single sign-on in each?

In LastPass, Business is limited to 3 SSO apps and Business Max is unlimited. In 1Password, identity provider integrations with Okta, Entra ID, OneLogin and Duo come with the Business plan, not the Starter Pack.
