ChatGPT alternatives: 11 compared

Teams look past ChatGPT when one shared credit pool covers chat work and coding, when custom GPTs have to be rebuilt, or when a contracting entity outside the United States matters. Most go to Claude or Google Gemini for a like-for-like assistant, to Microsoft Copilot if their staff already live in Microsoft 365, and to Mistral Vibe for a French vendor.

Short answer: The closest replacements for ChatGPT in our AI chat assistants ranking are Claude, Google Gemini and Microsoft Copilot. Choose Claude if you want the closest assistant with a self-serve team plan and no training on content by default. All 11 alternatives below are ranked products from Best AI Chat Assistants in 2026, and each says where it differs from ChatGPT and when ChatGPT is still the better choice.

Visibility in our rankings can be paid for. Payment moves a vendor's position within the shortlist; it never adds a vendor, and it never changes a word of the review or of this page. The first three alternatives go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow in their ranked order. Why buyers look past ChatGPT

  1. Work and Codex draw on one pool

OpenAI's pricing page says ChatGPT Work uses the same pricing, credits and usage limits as Codex. Its own FAQ calls the message counts estimates, not fixed limits, and says similar tasks can consume different amounts. A team that budgets chat and coding separately has no separate pool to budget.

  2. The model line changes inside the plan

The docs put model names and retirement dates on the pricing page. GPT-5.5 retired from Codex with ChatGPT sign-in on October 14, 2026. GPT-6.1 Sol is listed in Work and Codex, not Chat, and for Enterprise and Edu it stays off until an administrator enables it.

  3. Custom GPTs are on their way out

OpenAI is moving custom GPTs to plugins and says they stop working at retirement. Custom actions do not transfer, the selected model does not carry over, and conversation starters and previous chats may not copy. Anyone who built on GPTs is rebuilding either way, so the move is a good time to compare.

1. Claude

Anthropic's assistant with self-serve team and enterprise plans · United States

The nearest like-for-like swap. Team is for 2 to 150 people and lists SSO, central billing, admin controls for connectors and no model training on content by default. Enterprise is self-serve with a 20-seat minimum. The consumer plans show training as an opt-out.

Pricing: Free plan; Pro $17 per month on annual billing ($20 monthly); Max from $100 per month; Team standard seat $20 per seat per month annual ($25 monthly); Enterprise self-serve at $20 per seat per month plus usage at API rates, 20 seat minimum. (free plan)

2. Google Gemini

Google's assistant, sold through Google AI plans · United States

Sold as Google AI plans rather than as a standalone chat subscription. The free tier lists image generation, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas and Gems with 15 GB of storage. Business plans sit on a separate tab, and activity auto-deletes after 18 months by default.

Switch from ChatGPT if your company already runs on Google accounts and wants the assistant bundled with that storage.

Pricing: Free $0 per month; Google AI Plus $4.99; Google AI Pro $19.99; Google AI Ultra from $99.99 and $199.99 (5x and 20x Pro limits); business plans sit on a separate tab. (free plan)

3. Microsoft Copilot

Microsoft's assistant inside its apps and on the web · United States

Individual access comes through Microsoft 365 plans, with a free tier on a Microsoft account. The navigation lists Chat, Create, Prompts, Cowork and Work IQ, and Microsoft sells business and enterprise tiers on its own pages. The contract is a Microsoft services agreement, not a stand-alone AI one.

Switch from ChatGPT if your staff already work in Word, Excel and Outlook and you want the assistant under the Microsoft agreement.

Pricing: Free tier with a Microsoft account; Microsoft 365 Personal $9.99 per month, Family $12.99, Premium $19.99 and Pro $99.99 (monthly billing only); annual prices $99.99, $129.99 and $199.99. (free plan)

4. Mistral Vibe (formerly Le Chat)

Mistral's assistant for chat, task agents and coding · France

Le Chat was renamed Vibe on August 12, 2026, with Work, Code and Chat modes, and the old URL and login still work. Team lists up to 30 GB of storage per user, domain verification and data export. Enterprise lists private deployments, audit logs and SAML SSO.

Switch from ChatGPT if you want a French vendor, data export on the team plan, and private deployment as an enterprise option.

Pricing: Free plan; Pro $14.99 per month; Team $24.99 per user per month; Enterprise by quote with custom models, audit logs and SAML SSO; verified students pay $5.99 for Pro. (free plan)

5. Perplexity

Source-linked answers with team seats and projects · United States

Built around source-linked answers more than open-ended chat. The free Standard plan offers practically unlimited basic searches, and Enterprise Pro states that data is never used for training. The consumer terms we read allow personal, non-commercial use, so a company rollout belongs on the Enterprise plans.

Switch from ChatGPT if most of your prompts are research questions where you want to see the sources.

Pricing: Free Standard plan; Pro and Education Pro ($10 per month, verified students); Max $200 per month or $2,000 per year; Enterprise Pro per seat from $40 per month or $400 per year; Pro's own price was not on the help page we read. (free plan)

Full review: #3 of 12 in our ranking · Visit Perplexity →

6. Grok

xAI's assistant, now sold in The X Subscription · United States

Now sold inside The X Subscription, which bundles Grok with Cursor and X. Usage is a weekly allowance shared across products, and team seats can mix tiers. The docs we read describe Grok as an assistant of SpaceXSI. Paid individual plans include X Premium benefits once an X account is connected.

Switch from ChatGPT if you already pay for X or Cursor and would rather have one bundled subscription than a separate chat plan.

Pricing: The X Subscription: Free, Plus $8 per month, Premium $30, Super $100, Ultra $200 (annual $80 to $2,000); team seats at $30, $100 and $200; existing SuperGrok and X Premium plans continue. (free plan)

7. Poe

One app for bots on many third-party models · United States

A front end for bots built on third-party models, not one vendor's assistant. Limits are counted in messages, points or compute points, and points are non-transferable and non-refundable. Quora, Inc. is the data controller. We found no team plan or admin console on the pages we fetched.

Switch from ChatGPT if you want to try many models in one app and manage the access yourself.

Pricing: Limits are expressed in messages per bot, points or compute points; purchased points follow Terms of Sale; no subscription price appeared on the pages we could fetch. (free plan)

Full review: #7 of 12 in our ranking · Visit Poe →

8. DeepSeek

Free chat app from the DeepSeek model lab · China

The chat app is described as free, and the model lab bills its API per million tokens with peak and off-peak rates. The privacy policy says personal data is collected, processed and stored in the People's Republic of China. We found no team plan, SSO or admin console on the pages we read.

Switch from ChatGPT if you build on the API for cost reasons and the data location is acceptable to your legal team.

Pricing: The app is described as free to use; the API is billed per million tokens, for example deepseek-flash at $0.15 input (cache miss) and $0.60 output off-peak, doubled at peak hours. (free plan)

9. Kimi

Moonshot AI's assistant with agents and desktop apps · China

Moonshot AI runs Kimi on the web, as Kimi Work and as Kimi Code, with a model it lists at 1M tokens of context. Kimi Business adds a dedicated workspace, seat management, invoices and connectors. The user terms require real-name authentication at registration and name a Beijing company.

Switch from ChatGPT if you want long-context work and agent features, and real-name registration is acceptable.

Pricing: Individual membership tiers and Kimi Business seats exist; amounts render inside the app and were not in the pages we fetched; the API is billed per token on a separate platform. (free plan)

Full review: #9 of 12 in our ranking · Visit Kimi →

10. HuggingChat

Free chat front end to open-source models · United States

A free chat front end to open-source models, where Omni picks a model or you choose one of the 132 listed on the page we read. It needs a Hugging Face account. We found no paid chat plan, team workspace or admin controls; the PRO account is a platform upgrade.

Switch from ChatGPT if you want to test open-source models in a browser without a per-seat contract.

Pricing: Free to use with a Hugging Face account; no paid chat plan appeared on the pages we fetched; Hugging Face PRO is a separate account upgrade at $9 per month. (free plan)

11. Pi

Inflection's empathetic personal conversation partner · United States

Inflection AI presents Pi as a personal intelligence partner, aimed at conversation more than office tasks. Switch from ChatGPT if you want a personal conversation partner and no company tooling.

Pricing: No price or plan appeared on the Inflection pages we could fetch, and pi.ai itself blocked automated reads. (free plan)

When ChatGPT is still the right choice

Stay on ChatGPT if your staff already use it daily and you want the least retraining. Business is $20 per user per month on annual billing with SAML SSO, MFA and no training on business data by default, and Enterprise adds SCIM, EKM, role-based access, audit logs and residency controls. If your custom GPTs are already plugins, the migration cost has been paid.

What to expect when you switch from ChatGPT

  1. Custom GPTs do not travel

OpenAI's guide converts a GPT to a plugin inside ChatGPT only. Instructions and knowledge files become a skill, while custom actions have to be rebuilt as an app connection or an MCP server. Before you cancel, copy each GPT's instructions, files and a few test prompts out as plain text.

  2. Archive audit logs before the cutoff

The Compliance Logs Platform retains data for 30 days, and OpenAI tells customers to export records continuously if they need longer. An Enterprise team that leaves without archiving loses its audit trail with the account. Set up the export first, then close the workspace.

  3. Expect chat history to stay behind

Claude's help page says exported data cannot be imported into another personal Claude account. We found no vendor page in this category promising an import from ChatGPT. Plan to carry over instructions and prompts, and keep the old export as an archive, not as a starting point.

Questions and answers

Can I move my custom GPTs to another assistant?

No, not directly. OpenAI's migration guide only covers conversion to plugins inside ChatGPT. The instructions and files can be copied by hand, but custom actions need to be rebuilt as connectors or an MCP server in whatever you move to.

What happens to a custom GPT if I leave it alone?

It keeps running until retirement, then it stops running and leaves the GPT directory. Once migrated to a plugin, the original becomes read-only. OpenAI says a GPT can still be migrated after retirement, although the GPT itself no longer runs.

Is my business data used to train the models?

Not by default on Business and Enterprise, according to OpenAI's docs. The pricing page says Business has no training on business data by default, and the Work FAQ says the same for Enterprise. The pages we read do not make that statement for Free or Plus.

Does ChatGPT Work offer zero data retention?

No. OpenAI's Work FAQ says local computer access with Work Cloud does not provide strict zero data retention. Residency covers only eligible content and supported workloads, and EKM covers supported stored content in eligible workspaces. Read the compatibility notes before promising a regulator anything.

How long does OpenAI keep audit logs?

The Compliance Logs Platform retains data for 30 days. OpenAI advises exporting records continuously to an e-discovery, DLP, SIEM or data-lake system if you need longer. Do this before a move, because the logs are tied to the workspace you are leaving.

Can I export my ChatGPT history before I switch?

We could not verify the export format. OpenAI's help article on exporting history blocked automated reads, so we cannot state what the file contains. Request an export while the account is active and open it before you cancel.

Will switching lower the bill?

Not by list price for a team seat. ChatGPT Business is $20 per user per month on annual billing and $25 monthly, and Claude's Team standard seat is $20 per seat on annual billing and $25 monthly. The difference is in what each plan includes.
