ChatGPT is the better single tool for a company that wants one assistant for drafting, analysis, coding and scheduled work, with a business plan at $20 per user. Perplexity is the better tool when most questions need an answer with sources attached, and it is the only one of the two that sells a seat for a research team at a published price of $40. Most small teams that research a lot will end up paying for Perplexity next to a general assistant rather than instead of one.

What the product is built to do

ChatGPT is a general assistant: OpenAI's docs describe chat on desktop, web and mobile, ChatGPT Work for multi-step tasks across a workspace's files and tools, and Codex for software work, all inside one plan. Perplexity's own plan page frames its product around Pro Search, Research queries and file or app creation with monthly limits. For a team that needs drafting, analysis and automation in one place, ChatGPT covers more ground.

Answers with sources

Perplexity states that Pro gives ten times as many citations per answer, and its search and Research modes are the point of the product. ChatGPT can search the web, but its pricing documentation talks about usage limits, credits and models rather than citation depth. When a manager needs to check where a claim came from before forwarding it, Perplexity is built for that habit and ChatGPT treats it as one feature among many.

Free tier and entry price

Perplexity's Standard plan is free with search history and what it calls practically unlimited basic searches, though advanced models and image generation are excluded. ChatGPT has a Free plan too, then Go at $8 and Plus at $20, with image generation not available on Free. Perplexity's Pro monthly price did not appear on the help pages we fetched, so the cheaper paid entry point cannot be confirmed. On the free tier alone, Perplexity gives more research.

ChatGPT Business costs $20 per user per month on annual billing ($25 monthly) with SAML SSO and MFA, and says business data is not used for training by default; Enterprise adds SCIM, EKM, role-based access and audit logs. Perplexity Enterprise Pro starts at $40 per seat per month or $400 per year, with shared Projects, file connectors and data never used for training. ChatGPT is cheaper per seat and Perplexity is narrower, so the two answer different questions.

Predictability of usage

ChatGPT Work and Codex share one pool of usage and credits, and OpenAI's docs say tasks that look alike can consume different amounts of allowance, so a heavy user can drain a colleague's budget. Perplexity also uses weekly and monthly limits on Pro, but its Enterprise Pro table lists numbers: 400 Pro Searches a week and 50 Research queries a month. A budget owner can plan around the second page more easily.
