People look past Sage when they want published prices instead of a quote, a lighter ledger for a small company, or one product where Sage offers several. Small UK firms tend to go to Clear Books, FreeAgent or Xero; growing groups look at Odoo or Business Central.
Visibility in our rankings can be paid for. Payment moves a vendor's position within
the shortlist; it never adds a vendor, and it never changes a word of the review or of this page. The first three alternatives
go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the
established names follow in their ranked order. How it works:
placement disclosure · editorial process.

Questions and answers
Can I export my data from Sage?
Export options depend on which Sage product you use, so check that product's help pages before cancelling. We did not verify the formats for this page. Whatever the route, take reports and lists while the subscription is still active.
Which Sage alternative is cheapest?
Clear Books and Zoho Books both publish a free plan, and Wave's Starter plan is $0. Clear Books' free plans cover Making Tax Digital for Income Tax filing, and Zoho's £0 plan adds Self Assessment filing. Prices change, so check each pricing page the day you buy.
Which alternative suits a UK limited company?
Clear Books, FreeAgent, Xero and Zoho Books all publish UK pages. Clear Books lists a Small plan for limited companies at £16 a month billed monthly, Zoho Books Standard is £12, and Xero starts at £18. VAT submission is on Medium at Clear Books and listed under Xero's plans.
Is there a Sage alternative that replaces a full finance suite?
Business Central and Odoo are the closest in scope here. Business Central lists Essentials at $80 and Premium at $110 per user per month, and Odoo prices all apps per user per month, with multi-company on its Custom plan. Both usually need implementation help.
Do the alternatives charge per user?
Some do and some do not. Xero states no per-user license fees, while Business Central and Odoo charge per user and QuickBooks Online caps users per tier. Clear Books lists unlimited users on its paid sole trader and property plans, and Small includes user permissions.
Does switching affect my tax filings?
Your filings continue only if the new product supports your tax regime, so check that first. Clear Books, Xero and FreeAgent describe Making Tax Digital support for UK users. Submit the first return after switching with extra care and compare it with the old ledger.
