Owners look past Zoho Books when a tier's user cap, a feature gate or its US-edition scope stops fitting, or when they want a bank-feed-first or ERP-style system. Most go to Xero or QuickBooks Online for the standard small-business route, FreshBooks or Wave for invoicing, and Odoo for a wider suite.

What each alternative does differently
1. Xero
Bank-feed-first cloud ledger with unlimited users · New Zealand
The usual small-business alternative. Three published tiers carry no per-user license fees, so Zoho Books' user caps disappear. The Early tier limits invoices to 20 and bills to 5, and multi-currency and project tracking sit on Established. Payroll is a separate add-on powered by Gusto.
Switch from Zoho Books if you want unlimited users on every plan and a bank-feed-centered workflow.
Pricing: Published monthly tiers with no per-user license fees; the entry tier caps invoices and bills, and multi-currency sits on the top plan in the US and on the top two UK plans. (free trial)

2. QuickBooks Online
The ledger most US accountants already know · United States
Five published tiers, from a limited Free plan with one user and two invoices a month up to Advanced with 25 users. Caps return at every step, for example one user on Simple Start and five on Plus. Inventory arrives on Plus. Intuit discounts the first three months.
Switch from Zoho Books if your accountant, payroll provider or lender already works in QuickBooks.
Pricing: Published monthly tiers from a limited Free plan (one user, two invoices a month, one bank connection) through Simple Start to Advanced, each capping users; payroll, payments and some add-ons are billed separately. (free plan)

3. FreshBooks
Double-entry books for firms that bill for their time · Canada
Invoicing and client billing come first, and tiers are sized by billable clients (5, 50, then unlimited) instead of users. Team members cost extra per person each month, and payroll is a separate paid add-on. It suits service businesses more than inventory-heavy ones.
Switch from Zoho Books if you bill clients for services and want pricing by client count.
Pricing: Published monthly tiers priced by the number of billable clients, with each extra team member charged as an add-on. (free trial)

4. Wave
No-cost bookkeeping for very small US and Canadian firms · Canada
The Starter plan is free and covers unlimited invoices, bills and estimates, so Wave earns money mainly from payment processing, quoted at 2.9% plus $0.60 per card payment on Starter. The Pro plan adds automatic bank imports and receipt capture. Check the plan pages for the limits that matter to you.
Switch from Zoho Books if you run a micro business that only needs invoicing and light bookkeeping for free.
Pricing: Starter plan is free; a paid Pro tier adds automatic bank imports and receipt features, with card and bank payment fees on invoices. (free plan)

6. Odoo Accounting
Accounting app inside a modular open-core business suite · Belgium
A modular ERP rather than a bookkeeping tool. One app can be used free with unlimited users, while the Standard and Custom plans price every app per user per month. Custom adds Studio, an external API and multi-company. Setup effort and partner help usually exceed any accounting-only tool.
Switch from Zoho Books if accounting is one part of an inventory, sales and project stack you want in one system.
Pricing: One app can be used free with unlimited users; the full suite is priced per user per month, with multi-company, Studio and self-hosting on the higher Custom plan, and implementation often done by partners. (free plan)

7. Akaunting
Open-source ledger you can host yourself · Turkey
Open-source accounting that you can self-host, with the Standard on-premise edition free and its source code available. The hosted cloud plans are sized by companies, users and invoices, and double-entry, bank feeds and client portal begin on Premium. Expect to manage updates and backups yourself on-premise.
Switch from Zoho Books if you want to host your own books and keep the source code.
Pricing: Free Standard edition to self-host, limited to one company, one user plus an accountant and 1,000 invoices; paid on-premise and cloud plans raise those limits and bundle marketplace apps. (open source)

11. Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central
Microsoft's partner-sold finance and operations system · United States
A full ERP priced per user: Essentials and Premium licenses, plus a cheaper Team Members license for read and approval access. Finance, inventory, purchasing and supply chain planning are all in scope. Microsoft directs buyers to a partner for assessment and consulting, so the first project costs more than the licenses.
Switch from Zoho Books if you have outgrown an accounting tool and need ERP depth with a Microsoft partner.
Pricing: Microsoft publishes per-user monthly license prices for Essentials and Premium, with cheaper licenses for occasional users; a reseller partner adds implementation and support fees on top. (free trial)

12. Sage Intacct
Dimensional, multi-entity ledger for finance teams · United Kingdom
Quote-based financial management for mid-market firms. Pricing depends on modules, users and entities, so there is no published tier to compare with Zoho Books. Annual or multi-year agreements can lower the rate. Implementation is a separate cost, so the first-year total is well above any small-business tool.
Switch from Zoho Books if you run several entities and need consolidation that a small-business tool lacks.
Pricing: Quote only through Sage or a partner; each application subscription, such as consolidation, inventory or order entry, adds a fee that depends mainly on user count, plus implementation fees. (none)

Questions and answers
How do I export my data from Zoho Books?
An admin goes to Settings, then Data Backup, then Backup Your Data, and picks CSV or XLS. A download link is emailed, usually within 30 minutes, and expires after 30 days. Personal identifiers are only included if the sensitive-data option is ticked.
Is there a contract or notice period for Zoho Books?
Zoho's pricing page says the service is pay-as-you-go with no obligation to sign a contract, and that you may cancel your subscription at any time. A separate refund policy governs what happens to fees already paid, so read it before cancelling mid-term.
What happens to my data after I cancel Zoho Books?
The data stays in the organization as view-only, so you can look but not edit. If the account is inactive for more than 120 days it is deleted permanently. Export a backup first, because deleting the organization removes everything.
Which Zoho Books plan has multi-currency?
Professional and above. The pricing page lists multi-currency transactions, inventory tracking and sales and purchase approvals starting on Professional, not on Free or Standard. If you only invoice in one currency, Standard is the lower rung and includes bank feeds and API access.
Does the Zoho Books Free plan include bank feeds?
No. The Free plan lists bank reconciliation, invoices, expenses and 1099 tools for one user plus an accountant, while connecting bank feeds appears first under Standard. Add-ons are not supported on Free except document autoscans.
Do extra users cost more on Zoho Books?
Yes. Each tier includes a fixed number of users, from 1 on Free to 15 on Ultimate, and additional users are sold as an add-on priced per user per month on annual billing. Monthly billing is priced higher than annual.
