People leave Wix when the site must live somewhere else than Wix's servers, when the promotional first-term price gives way to the standard one, or when a free plan stopped being enough. Most move to Squarespace or Webflow for design, WordPress.com for portability and plugins, or Framer and Duda for narrower jobs.
Visibility in our rankings can be paid for. Payment moves a vendor's position within
the shortlist; it never adds a vendor, and it never changes a word of the review or of this page. How it works:

What each alternative does differently
1. Squarespace
Design-forward templates for creatives and small businesses · United States
The closest all-in-one match for a small business: templates, hosting and commerce in one plan. A 14 day free trial replaces a permanent free tier. The cheapest plan charges a 2% transaction fee on online sales, which higher plans remove, and plans are billed per site.
Switch from Wix if you want a template-led, design-first builder with selling built into every plan.
Pricing: Published plans are billed per site with no permanent free tier, only a 14-day trial; all plans can sell, with a 2% store fee on Basic that Core and above remove. (free trial)

2. Webflow
Visual website builder that outputs clean, production-grade code · United States
A visual builder that exposes real layout and CMS structure, aimed at designers and marketing teams. Site plans are split: Basic has no CMS, which starts at Premium, and a free Starter plan runs on a webflow.io domain. It asks for more skill than Wix's editor.
Switch from Wix if you want precise layout control and a real CMS, and have a designer on the team.
Pricing: Site plans are billed per site on a published table starting with a free Starter tier on a webflow.io domain; Basic has no CMS, which starts on the Premium site plan, and a custom domain requires a paid plan. (free plan)

3. WordPress.com
Managed WordPress hosting with a builder-style editor · United States
Hosted WordPress, so the content model is WordPress, not a closed editor. A free plan carries WordPress.com ads, and paid plans remove them and allow plugins from a marketplace of more than 60,000. It leaves more to configure than Wix does.
Switch from Wix if you want a WordPress base and need plugins.
Pricing: A free plan is available with a WordPress.com subdomain, ads and no plugins; paid plans (Personal, Premium, Business, Commerce) are on a published table, and plugins can be installed on every paid plan. (free plan)

Switch from Wix if your site is mostly marketing pages and you want it built like a design file.
Pricing: A free plan includes a Framer subdomain, 500 AI credits and 1GB bandwidth and is pitched for non-commercial use; paid site plans are Basic at $10 and Pro at $30 a month billed yearly, adding custom domains and higher usage limits. (free plan)

Questions and answers
Can I export my Wix site to another host?
No. Wix's help page says a Wix site must run on Wix's servers, because it uses Wix's proprietary technology. You can connect a domain you manage elsewhere, but the site itself stays on Wix. Moving platforms means rebuilding the site.
Can I export my Wix store products?
Yes, to CSV. Wix Stores exports products with their data, up to 5,000 rows per file, but exporting digital products is not supported. The CSV is a start for another shop platform, though field names will need mapping.
Can I transfer my domain away from Wix?
Yes, if the domain was bought from Wix. The domain must be unlocked, Wix emails an authorization code to the registrant, and a domain that was just registered or changed may be held by ICANN's 60 day lock. Your Wix site is disconnected on transfer.
Does the Wix price go up at renewal?
The plans page says displayed discounted prices are valid only for the initial term of yearly or multi-year subscriptions. Check the price shown at checkout against the standard monthly rate to find your renewal figure, as prices vary by country.
Can I get a refund if I cancel Wix early?
For the first upgrade, yes. Wix says you can cancel a Premium plan within 14 days and receive a full refund, and that this applies to the initial upgrade. Later renewals are not covered by that statement.
Will the free domain stay free if I leave?
Not necessarily. The free domain voucher is for one year and is only valid with a purchase of a new domain from Wix, not for renewal. After the first year you pay the domain's renewal price, wherever it is registered.
