Perplexity alternatives: 11 compared

Buyers look past Perplexity when plan limits are hard to predict, when the consumer terms rule out company use, or when they want a different kind of search: ad-free, private, academic or API-first. Most go to Kagi or Brave Search for everyday answers, to Consensus or Elicit for papers, and to a search API when software does the reading.

Short answer: The closest replacements for Perplexity in our AI search engines ranking are Kagi, Brave Search and DuckDuckGo. Choose Kagi if you want to pay a flat fee for ad-free search with an assistant and a choice of models. The other 10 entries come from our Best AI Search Engines in 2026 list as well, and every one is set against Perplexity specifically, with a note on the cases where Perplexity should stay.

Visibility in our rankings can be paid for. Payment moves a vendor's position within the shortlist; it never adds a vendor, and it never changes a word of the review or of this page. The first three alternatives go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow in their ranked order. How it works: placement disclosure · editorial process.

  • Wrong for: Wrong for a buyer who wants an ad-free, tracker-free engine for everyday lookups, or a developer who needs raw search results at a few dollars per thousand calls. Look at Kagi, Brave Search or Tavily instead.

Why buyers look past Perplexity

  1. Limits are counted in several ways

Perplexity's plan comparison counts Pro Searches per day on Standard, weekly on Pro and Max, and research queries per month. On Pro and Max it describes limits as average use or advanced use, not as a number. Budgeting a team's month is guesswork until the usage shows up.

  2. The consumer terms are personal use

Section 5.1 of the terms limits use to personal, non-commercial purposes, and section 5.2 prohibits exploiting the service commercially. Company use belongs on the Enterprise plans or the separate API Platform. A team that started on Pro with company cards has a contract question to settle.

  3. Data handling differs by plan

The help center says Standard, Pro and Max users can opt out of training in settings, while Enterprise Pro and Max data is never used for training. The privacy notice also lists sharing with advertising partners for targeted advertising. Buyers with strict rules read both documents before choosing a plan.

What each alternative does differently

1. Kagi

United States

Funded by subscriptions, and the pricing page says there are no ads and no tracking. Starter has 300 searches, Professional is unlimited, and Ultimate adds Research mode and flagship models from several labs in the Assistant. The search is the product; the AI is a feature of it.

Switch from Perplexity if you want to pay a flat fee for ad-free search with an assistant and a choice of models.

3. DuckDuckGo

United States

Search stays the main product and the AI features sit beside it. Duck.ai gives chat with third-party models, with recent chats stored on your device and deletable with the Fire Button. Plus and Pro subscriptions unlock larger models and higher usage. No team plan appeared on the pages we read.

Switch from Perplexity if you want occasional AI chat with chats kept on the device, and mostly use search.

4. Consensus

United States

Searches scientific papers instead of the open web, so a claim traces to a study. Pricing is split into Individual and Team and Enterprise with monthly or annual billing, though the page we fetched printed no amounts. It will not answer supplier, news or competitor questions that a web engine handles.

Switch from Perplexity if your questions are about what the research says, such as health, nutrition or policy evidence.

5. Elicit

United States

Built for literature work. The free plan lists unlimited search across more than 138 million papers, and paid plans add a systematic review workflow that screens 5,000 papers on Pro, table columns, and API access. It is a research workspace, not a general web answer engine.

Switch from Perplexity if you do literature reviews and want paper tables and screening, not web answers.

6. You.com

United States

The pricing page we read covers developer products only. A free Web Search API tier through MCP allows 100 queries a day with no account, Web Search costs $5 per 1,000 calls, and a cited Answer API costs the same. There is no per-seat plan on that page.

Switch from Perplexity if an engineer will wire search and cited answers into an application and you want metered billing.

7. Microsoft Copilot

United States

Chat, web search and file search in one Microsoft app, with a free tier on a Microsoft account. Microsoft 365 subscriptions include the Copilot app, and some features need an eligible plan. The page describes grounded answers but does not say whether they carry citations.

Switch from Perplexity if your staff already hold Microsoft accounts and you would rather not add a vendor.

8. Google AI Mode

United States

A mode inside Google Search with follow-up questions and input by text, voice, image, file or URL. Google's help page says it does not always get it right and tells users to check important information in more than one source. The Gemini 4 Argon option needs an AI Pro or Ultra plan.

Switch from Perplexity if you already search on Google and want AI answers without opening another product.

9. Tavily

United States

A search layer for software agents. The Researcher tier gives 1,000 credits a month free, pay as you go costs $0.008 per credit, and Project is $30 a month for 4,000 credits. Credits are used per request type, so cost per search depends on what you call.

Switch from Perplexity if you use Perplexity's API as a search feed for an agent and want credit-based billing.

10. Linkup

France

A search API with Fetch, Search and Research endpoints. Its price page lists search at $0.005 to $0.006 per request and research at $0.25 to $2.50, with 4,000 free queries. It offers a Private Index and a Bring your Own Cloud mode, and lists SOC 2 Type II on all plans.

Switch from Perplexity if you build an agent and want per-request pricing with a private index or in-cloud option.

Official site → · Our Linkup review

11. Parallel

United States

Priced per request across several APIs. The first 5,000 requests a month are free, Search costs $1 to $5 per 1,000 requests for 10 results, and the Task API runs from $5 to $2,400 per 1,000. Enterprise adds zero data retention and SSO. Aimed at agent builders, not at people reading answers.

Switch from Perplexity if you need batch research and enrichment tasks run by software at a fixed price per request.

When Perplexity is still the right choice

Perplexity is still the right choice when a person asks open web questions all day and wants to see the sources next to each answer. The free Standard plan lets a team try it before paying, and Enterprise Pro adds shared Projects, seat management and a statement that data is never used for training. It also offers a separate API Platform. If the team is on an Enterprise plan with known usage, switching saves little.

What to expect when you switch from Perplexity

  1. Export threads before you cancel

The privacy notice describes an Export my data button on the account details page, which sends a download link by email. Deleting an account needs an active subscription cancelled first. Run the export before cancelling, and keep the Projects and sources that matter as documents of your own.

  2. Cancel before the renewal date

The terms say subscriptions renew automatically at the then-current rate, payments are nonrefundable and there are no credits for partial periods. You keep access to the end of the paid period after cancelling. Cancel in account settings before the renewal date, and note that the terms allow price changes after reasonable notice.

  3. Rebuild prompts and test on old questions

Saved Projects, uploaded files and shared threads do not transfer to another product. List the ten questions your team asks most, run them in the finalist, and open the cited links. An engine that returns weaker sources on your own questions is a worse fit, whatever its price.

Questions and answers

Can I export my Perplexity history before leaving?

Yes, the privacy notice describes an Export my data button on the account details page. You receive an email with a download link. The terms themselves give no export right, so do it while the account is active, and copy the sources of any answer you will reuse.

How do I cancel Perplexity?

Cancel in account settings before the renewal date, or by emailing support@perplexity.ai, according to section 2.3 of the terms. Access continues to the end of the period you paid for. Payments are nonrefundable, so cancelling after renewal does not return the fee for that period.

Can my company use Perplexity Pro?

The terms limit the consumer service to personal, non-commercial use, so company use should be on an Enterprise plan or the API Platform. Enterprise Pro starts at $40 per seat per month or $400 per year, and eligible educational or nonprofit teams are listed at $30 per seat per month.

Is Perplexity data used to train models?

On Standard, Pro, Education Pro and Max plans you can opt out in settings, according to the help center. On Enterprise Pro and Enterprise Max, the help center says data is never used for model training. The API Platform says data is never logged or used for training.

Does Perplexity's price change at renewal?

It can. The terms say subscriptions renew at the then-current rates and that pricing may change after reasonable notice. The help article we read prints no Pro or Max amount, so read the price on your own account page before each renewal and cancel first if it moved.

What do I lose moving from Perplexity to Kagi or Brave?

You lose Perplexity's Projects, its Research and browser-agent allowances, and its shared team spaces. Kagi's Professional plan costs $10 per month and its team plan details are not priced on the page we fetched. Brave's AI answers are tied to Brave Search, and its Leo assistant lives in the browser.
