Grammarly alternatives: 11 compared

People leave Grammarly when AI prompts are metered, when a team needs more than one style guide, or when text has to stay with a specific vendor or in a specific language. Most go to LanguageTool or ProWritingAid for checking, DeepL Write for rewriting, and Writer or Jasper for team brand voice.

Short answer: The closest replacements for Grammarly in our AI writing tools ranking are LanguageTool, ProWritingAid and DeepL Write. Choose LanguageTool if you write in several languages and want a plain checker with team style guides. All 11 alternatives below are ranked products from Best AI Writing Tools in 2026, and each says where it differs from Grammarly and when Grammarly is still the better choice.

Visibility in our rankings can be paid for. Payment moves a vendor's position within the shortlist; it never adds a vendor, and it never changes a word of the review or of this page. How it works: placement disclosure · editorial process.

Why buyers look past Grammarly

  1. AI use is metered by prompt

Grammarly's plans page gives Free 100 AI prompts a month and Pro 2,000 per member a month. Only Enterprise is listed as unlimited. Heavy rewriters hit a ceiling that checkers priced per seat or by day do not impose in the same way.

  2. Team controls sit on a higher tier

On the plans page Pro includes up to 2 user groups, 1 style guide and 1 brand tone. Unlimited groups, guides and tones, plus SAML SSO, SCIM and audit logs, are listed under Enterprise, which is sold by quote.

  3. The vendor is now a platform company

Grammarly says it joined the Superhuman brand in 2025 after acquiring Coda and Superhuman Mail, and its privacy policy names Superhuman Platform Inc. (formerly Grammarly) in San Francisco. Buyers who wanted a plain writing checker may prefer a narrower vendor.

The closest like-for-like checker, offered in 30+ languages with a Basic tier and a Premium tier. Premium can be bought monthly, quarterly, annually or for two years, and a Teams plan adds a shared style guide. Rewriting is less central than in Grammarly's prompt-based AI.

Switch from Grammarly if you write in several languages and want a plain checker with team style guides.

Pricing: Basic is free; Premium and Teams are paid, with monthly, quarterly, annual and two-year billing and Teams priced by number of users. The price figures did not load when we fetched the page. (free plan)

Pricing: Free tier; Premium is €30 a month, €120 a year or €399 once for a lifetime license; Premium Pro is €36 a month or €144 a year; Teams is €12 per user a month. (free plan)

Rewriting comes as Write Pro, an add-on to DeepL's translation plans on Individual and Team, and bundled into higher plans. The pitch is translation first, with glossaries and style rule lists. It is a poor match if you only want proofreading of English text.

Switch from Grammarly if you already translate with DeepL and want rewriting inside the same subscription.

Pricing: Write Pro is an add-on at €6.99 per user a month billed annually, VAT included, on the Individual and Team plans, and is included in Business and Enterprise. (free trial)

5. Writer

Enterprise AI platform on its own Palmyra models · United States

An enterprise platform rather than a browser checker: Starter covers up to 5 users on a 14-day trial with no card, and Enterprise is unlimited users by quote. It runs agents and playbooks, so its scope is wider than editing text, and prices are not published.

Marketing content platform with brand voice and agents · United States

Marketing content with agents, a Canvas workspace and stored brand voices. Pro includes one seat with 2 brand voices, 5 knowledge assets and 3 audiences, on a 7-day trial, while Business is custom priced. It generates campaigns more than it corrects grammar.

When Grammarly is still the right choice

Stay with Grammarly if the job is checking English as people write in email, documents and the browser, and the Free or Pro allowance covers your use. It is also reasonable for a team that needs invoicing (Business plans of 10 or more members can be invoiced annually), SAML SSO and audit logs under Enterprise. Alternatives win on language coverage, editing reports or vendor choice, not on cost alone.

What to expect when you switch from Grammarly

  1. Style rules and brand tone are rebuilt by hand

Grammarly's style guide and brand tone are tied to its user groups. We found no page describing a transfer to another tool, so plan to copy rules into LanguageTool, Writer or Jasper manually and test them on sample documents.

  2. Decide the AI training setting before you go

Grammarly's privacy policy lets you decide whether your content trains its models, through a setting in your account. Check that setting and your data-rights options before you cancel, and ask any new vendor the same question in writing.

  3. Allow time for the extension swap

Grammarly says it works across more than 1 million apps and websites, so each person has to replace it wherever it is installed. Run both side by side for a week to compare suggestions on real emails before you cancel.

Questions and answers

How many AI prompts does Grammarly give before I have to pay?

Free includes 100 AI prompts a month, per Grammarly's plans page. Pro raises this to 2,000 per member a month, and Enterprise is listed as unlimited. If you rewrite often, that allowance is the figure to compare against alternatives.

Does Grammarly use my text to train its AI?

It can, unless you change your account setting. Grammarly's privacy policy says you decide whether your user content trains its AI models by adjusting training controls in account settings, and that it restricts its AI service providers from training on customer content.

Who owns Grammarly now?

Its privacy policy names Superhuman Platform Inc. (formerly Grammarly) in San Francisco as data controller. Grammarly's about page says it acquired Coda and Superhuman Mail in 2025 and became part of the Superhuman brand.

Where do I find my Grammarly subscription to cancel it?

Sign in, open the Account tab in the left sidebar and choose Your account, then Subscription. Mobile users can go to account.grammarly.com/subscription. Grammarly's page for these steps points to a separate article for the cancellation itself, which we did not read.

Can a team pay Grammarly by invoice?

Yes for larger groups: the plans page lists invoicing for Business plans of 10 or more members billed annually. Smaller teams pay by card or PayPal, which is worth knowing if your finance team requires invoices.

Which alternative suits non-English writing?

LanguageTool states it covers 30+ languages, which makes it the first one to test for multilingual teams. DeepL Write belongs to a translation vendor, so it suits teams that already translate content there.
