Runway alternatives: 13 compared

Teams look past Runway when credits run out faster than the plan suggests, when the self-serve terms on training are a problem, or when the job is a presenter rather than footage. Footage buyers move to Luma AI, Pika or Google Flow; presenter and training buyers move to HeyGen, Synthesia or Colossyan.

Short answer: The closest replacements for Runway in our AI video generators ranking are Luma AI, Pika and Google Flow. Choose Luma AI if you want a comparable footage generator and need HDR or EXR output for a compositing pipeline. All 13 alternatives below are ranked products from Best AI Video Generators in 2026, and each says where it differs from Runway and when Runway is still the better choice.

Visibility in our rankings can be paid for. Payment moves a vendor's position within the shortlist; it never adds a vendor, and it never changes a word of the review or of this page. The first three alternatives go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow in their ranked order. Runway at a glance

  • Headquarters: United States
  • Pricing model: Free + paid tiers
  • Pricing: Free is $0 with 125 one-time credits; Standard is $15 a month or $12 a month billed yearly; Pro is $35 or $28; Max is $95 or $76. The API sells credits at $0.01 each and charges per second of output by model.
  • Free option: Free plan
  • Built for: Creative and marketing teams making footage
  • Wrong for: A training department that needs a named presenter, captions in forty languages and an LMS package. Runway has no course features; Synthesia or Colossyan are built for that.

Why buyers look past Runway

  1. Credits are spent per second, and plans reset

Runway meters everything in credits. Its pricing page puts Gen-4.5 at 12 credits per second, so the 625 credits on Standard are roughly 52 seconds of footage. On Standard and Pro unused credits do not roll over; only Max carries one month.

  2. Self-serve terms allow training on your inputs

The terms of use say inputs and outputs may be used to train Runway's models and grant a perpetual, irrevocable licence to them. The enterprise page states the opposite: "We don't train on your data". That promise sits on the quoted tier, not the $12 to $76 plans.

  3. It makes footage, not presenters or ads

Runway generates clips from prompts, images and video. A named avatar speaking a script, an LMS package or a batch of product ads built from a URL belongs to a different class of tool, and the category has several of them.

What each alternative does differently

1. Luma AI

Ray video model with agents, by subscription or API · United States

A direct competitor on prompt-to-clip generation. Luma's API page describes Ray3.2 with multi-keyframe control of up to 16 keyframes per clip, HDR generation and 16-bit EXR export. The consumer app also reframes, enhances and transfers motion. It sells credits by subscription, not Runway's per-second pricing.

Switch from Runway if you want a comparable footage generator and need HDR or EXR output for a compositing pipeline.

Pricing: Plus is $30 a month or $25 a month billed yearly with 10,000 credits; Pro is $90 or $75 with 40,000; Ultra is $300 or $250 with 150,000; Team and Enterprise are quoted. The API charges per clip, $1.20 for 5 seconds at 1080p on Ray3.2. (none)

2. Pika

Short generative video, image and audio clips · United States

Pika offers its own Pika 2.5 model beside third-party video models such as Seedance 2.5, Wan 3.0 and MiniMax H3. Its apps cover product ad swaps, motion transfer and video extension. It is sold to individuals and small social teams, with an enterprise page, not to departments.

Switch from Runway if you make short social clips on a small budget and want several engines in one subscription.

Pricing: Free is $0 with no monthly credits (credit packs only); Starter is $10 a month or $8 a month on annual billing with 900 credits; Creator is $35 or $28 with 3,150 credits; Fancy starts at $95 a month; Enterprise is quoted. (free plan)

3. Google Flow

Google's video studio on Veo and Omni models · United States

Flow is Google's video studio, and its credits come bundled with Google AI plans instead of a standalone video subscription. Google's plan page lists video generation among the AI Plus features. It suits a company already buying Google AI, and gives you no separate Runway-style tools for editing footage.

Switch from Runway if your company already pays for Google AI plans and you would rather not add another video vendor.

Pricing: Flow credits come with Google AI plans: on the Netherlands price list we could read, AI Plus is €4.99 a month with 200 Flow credits, AI Pro €21.99 with 1,000, and AI Ultra from €99.99 with 10,000 or 25,000. Workspace plans include 50 daily credits. (free plan)

4. Adobe Firefly

Text and image-to-video with licensed training data · United States

Firefly sits inside Adobe's creative suite and generates video with Adobe's own model, plus partner models, using credits shared with image and audio. It generates seconds of footage per run. The draw is the Adobe contract and workflow; the limit is monthly credit counts.

Switch from Runway if your designers live in Adobe apps and legal wants an established enterprise vendor behind the output.

Pricing: Firefly Standard is US$9.99 a month with 2,000 generative credits; Firefly Pro is US$19.99 a month with 4,000; Pro Plus is US$49.99 with 10,000; Premium is US$199.99 with 50,000. A free tier gives daily generations. (free plan)

5. invideo AI

Prompt-to-video agent with a multiplayer timeline editor · Singapore

invideo AI is an agent-driven editor that assembles finished marketing videos from a prompt, with a timeline editor and multiplayer editing on paid plans. Its pricing page bills per seat and monthly credits, and gates Seedance models by plan. It assembles a video; Runway generates raw footage.

Switch from Runway if you want a finished marketing video with a timeline editor, not a library of separate clips.

Pricing: Per seat on annual billing: Starter $20 a month with 400 credits, Plus $50 a month with 2,000 credits, Max $100 a month with 5,000 credits. Unused credits do not roll over. (none)

6. HeyGen

Avatar video and video translation with a public business tier · United States

HeyGen is built around avatars: its site advertises Avatar V, over 500 stock avatars on the free tier and video translation. The free plan gives 3 videos a month. Paid plans meter credits. It makes a person speaking to camera, which Runway does not attempt.

Switch from Runway if the video is a spokesperson or translated message rather than generated scenery.

Pricing: Free is $0 for 3 videos a month; Creator is $29 a month or $24 a month on annual billing; Pro starts at $49 a month; Business is $149 a month plus $20 per seat per month; Enterprise is quoted. Paid tiers are metered in credits. (free plan)

7. Synthesia

Avatar presenter video for training and communications · United Kingdom

Synthesia's site lists avatars, video dubbing and translation, a screen recorder and motion graphics, aimed at learning, HR and sales enablement teams. It centres on a presenter with a script and has a free Basic plan. Cinematic prompt-to-footage is not its product.

Switch from Runway if you produce training, onboarding or internal communication videos with a presenter.

Pricing: Basic is $0; Starter is $29 a month or $18 a month billed yearly; Creator is $89 a month or $64 a month billed yearly; Enterprise is quoted. Each tier carries a credit allowance. (free plan)

8. AI Studios

Avatar video studio with dubbing and generative models · South Korea

AI Studios advertises more than 2,000 avatars, dubbing into over 150 languages and a video generator that connects to models such as Sora 2 and Veo 3.1. It combines an avatar studio with third-party generation. You choose among many presenters instead of one first-party footage model.

Switch from Runway if you want a very large avatar choice plus dubbing, with generative models available in the same account.

Pricing: Free is $0 for up to 3 videos; Personal is $24 a month; Team is $55 per seat per month; Enterprise is quoted. Paid tiers add a generative-credit allowance and AI dubbing minutes. (free plan)

9. Creatify

Product-URL to video ad generator · United States

Creatify turns a product URL into an advertising video and offers ad cloning, a creative agent and a competitor tracker, plus an API and MCP integration. It is aimed at direct-response ads for e-commerce and apps. It is no general video lab and offers little for cinematic work.

Switch from Runway if your output is paid-social product ads and you want them built from a product page.

Pricing: Free gives 10 monthly credits with watermarked exports; Starter is $39 a month with 100 credits; Pro starts at $99 a month with 300 credits; Enterprise is quoted. (free plan)

Full review: #14 of 14 in our ranking · Visit Creatify →

10. Colossyan

Avatar video with quizzes and SCORM for learning teams · Hungary

Colossyan builds training video from PDFs, PowerPoint files, documents and URLs, with presenters, branching, assessments and SCORM delivery listed on its site. It is a course tool first. Prompted cinematic footage is outside its scope, so it replaces Runway only for learning teams.

Switch from Runway if the real need is e-learning with quizzes and an LMS package, not generated scenes.

Pricing: Starter is free; Professional is listed at $59 a month plus $30 a month per additional member for up to 3 editors; Enterprise is quoted. Allowances are video minutes per month, counted separately for the NEO and NEO2 avatar engines. (free plan)

Full review: #1 of 14 in our ranking · Visit Colossyan →

11. Fliki

Text-to-speech led video from scripts and articles · United States

Fliki starts from text. Its site advertises over 2,000 AI voices in more than 80 languages and turns an idea, script or article into video with voiceover. Voice is the centre of the product, where Runway is built on visual generation. Dollar prices did not render, so check them.

Switch from Runway if your videos are narrated explainers or content repurposed from articles, where voiceover matters more than visuals.

Pricing: Free, Standard, Premium and Enterprise tiers, the paid ones priced per user per month and metered in credits (180 a month on Standard, 600 on Premium). The dollar amounts did not render in the page as we retrieved it, so none are quoted. (free plan)

Full review: #13 of 14 in our ranking · Visit Fliki →

12. Pictory

Script, URL and slide-deck to captioned video · United States

Pictory converts scripts, blog URLs and slide decks into captioned videos with stock footage and voiceover, and offers highlights from longer recordings. It assembles existing material instead of generating new clips. A content marketing team repurposing written pieces needs this; a team that wants original footage does not.

Switch from Runway if you repurpose blogs, scripts and webinars into captioned videos rather than generating original footage.

Pricing: Starter is $29 a month, or $25 a month billed annually, for 1 user; Professional is $59 or $35; Team is $199 or $119 for 3 or more users; Enterprise is quoted. Plans meter video minutes and a separate pool of AI credits. (free trial)

13. Vyond

Animated, avatar and text-to-video studio for business · United States

Vyond makes animated and avatar business video for training and HR, with text-to-video, a large voice library and translation. It is priced per named user on monthly or annual terms. For two marketers making product clips, a credit plan like Runway's is the closer fit.

Switch from Runway if you need animated characters and scenes for corporate training, sold per user with shared team spaces.

Pricing: Per user: Starter is $99 a month or $58 a month billed annually; Professional is $199 a month or $100 a month billed annually; Enterprise ($137) and Agency ($167) are annual only, with multi-seat pricing on request. (free trial)

When Runway is still the right choice

Stay with Runway when the brief is footage and you want one subscription that opens several engines. Standard at $15 a month (or $12 billed yearly) removes watermarks and includes 4K upscaling and access to Gen-4.5, Kling 3.0 and other models. The terms state that Runway does not restrict commercial use of outputs. The API price list is public per model, which makes per-clip cost calculable.

What to expect when you switch from Runway

  1. Credits do not move with you

Credits bought on Runway stay on Runway. Purchased top-up credits never expire, so spend them before you cancel. Monthly plan credits on Standard and Pro reset at each billing date, and the terms treat fees as non-refundable. Time the cancellation near the end of a cycle.

  2. Rebuild prompts and keep your finished clips

Download finished clips and source images before you cancel, since storage is capped by plan (20GB on Standard, 500GB on Max). Prompts will not behave the same on another engine, so budget a test week to rebuild the three or four looks your brand actually uses.

  3. Check the new vendor's training terms first

If training on uploaded footage was your reason to leave, read the destination's terms before moving assets. Enterprise tiers at several vendors differ from the self-serve plans. Ask for the no-training position in writing, not only on a pricing page.

Questions and answers

Do my Runway credits roll over if I switch plans or cancel?

Only on the Max plan, which carries up to one month of unused credits forward. Standard and Pro credits reset within 24 hours of the billing date, while credits you purchase on top never expire. Cancelling keeps access until the end of the paid term.

Does Runway train on my uploads?

On the self-serve plans the terms say yes: inputs and outputs may be used to train its models. The enterprise page says "We don't train on your data" and lists SOC 2 Type 2 and single sign-on. Ask sales to confirm that in your contract.

Can I get a refund when I cancel Runway?

Not as of right. The terms say fees are non-refundable and that cancelling gives no credit for the remaining period, though Runway may refund on request at its discretion. Your subscription stays active until the term ends.

Will my Runway subscription renew automatically?

Yes. The terms say Runway charges your payment method each renewal period until you cancel, and that it can change fees or features at renewal. You cancel from the Plans and Billing page in your account.

Who owns the videos I made with Runway?

You do, in the sense that the terms say the company does not claim ownership of inputs or outputs and does not restrict commercial use of outputs. The same section grants Runway a perpetual licence to use them for training.

What does Runway cost through the API instead of the app?

The developer docs sell credits at $0.01 each and price every model per second. Kling 3.0 Standard without audio is 9 credits per second, so a clip's cost can be worked out before you commit to a plan.
