ElevenLabs alternatives: 11 compared

Buyers look past ElevenLabs when a credit meter makes monthly cost hard to predict, when team seats arrive only on the Scale plan, or when they want per-character cloud billing or on-premises deployment. They go to WellSaid, Typecast and Cartesia for studio or API use, and to Google, Amazon or Azure for volume.

Short answer: The closest replacements for ElevenLabs in our AI voice generators ranking are WellSaid, Typecast and Cartesia. Choose WellSaid if you produce English narration and want to buy downloaded minutes, not credits. All 11 alternatives below are ranked products from Best AI Voice Generators in 2026, and each says where it differs from ElevenLabs and when ElevenLabs is still the better choice.

Visibility in our rankings can be paid for. Payment moves a vendor's position within the shortlist; it never adds a vendor, and it never changes a word of the review or of this page. How it works: placement disclosure · editorial process.

Why buyers look past ElevenLabs

  1. Everything is metered in credits

ElevenLabs sells monthly credit allowances, from 10,000 on Free to 6,000,000 on Business. Unused credits roll over for up to two months, capped at three times the monthly quota. Downgrading or cancelling forfeits them, so a heavy month followed by a quiet one is hard to budget.

  2. Commercial use and teams are gated

The Free plan carries no commercial licence, and its terms limit free users to non-commercial purposes. Workspace seats start at Scale, with 3 seats, and Business has 10. A small team that wants shared access pays for the tier that adds seats, not for the voice quality it already has.

  3. Output is not always downloadable

The terms say ElevenLabs may let you download Output from some, but not all, of its services. Its history API lists generated audio but excludes music and sound effects. Teams that treat generated audio as an archive should check what leaves the account before committing.

2. Typecast

Voice studio with emotion controls and avatars · South Korea

Voice generation and playback are free on every plan, and credits are spent only when you download audio. The free plan requires attribution on anything you download. A commercial licence starts on Basic. It also exports video, which suits creators more than API-heavy teams.

Switch from ElevenLabs if you audition many takes and want to pay only for the audio you download.

Pricing: Free is $0 with about 5 minutes of lifetime download credit; Basic is $5 a month, Plus $19, Pro $29 and Business $69, with discounted yearly billing; Enterprise and API are by inquiry. (free plan)

3. Cartesia

Streaming speech models for voice products · United States

Credit-based like ElevenLabs, but every plan includes unlimited workspace seats, so a team does not pay for seats. Commercial use and instant cloning start at Pro, professional cloning at Startup. It also sells speech-to-text and managed voice agents, so it is built for developers.

Switch from ElevenLabs if you build voice products with a team and do not want seat charges.

Pricing: Free is $0 with 20K credits a month; Pro is $5 with 100K credits; Startup is $49 with 1.25M; Scale is $299 with 8M; Enterprise is quoted. The page converts plans into about 27, 133, 1,667 and 10,667 minutes of speech. (free plan)

4. Speechify

Reader app, voiceover studio and speech API · United States

Sold as separate products: a consumer reader app, Studio for voice-overs, video and dubbing, and an API with cloning, whose Scale subscription is published at $499 a month. You choose the product first, so check which one covers your use case before comparing prices.

Switch from ElevenLabs if you want one vendor for a reader app, studio voice-overs and a developer API.

Pricing: Studio has a free plan with 600 credits, Starter at $100 a year and Creator at $300 a year; the API starts free with 500K characters, then $10, $99 and $499 a month; the reader app Premium is $29 a month. (free plan)

5. Descript

Text-based audio and video editor with AI voices · United States

An editor first: you cut audio and video as text, and AI speech with custom voice clones is one tool inside it. Plans meter media hours and AI credits per person. It replaces ElevenLabs only if narration is part of editing, not a standalone service.

Switch from ElevenLabs if you edit podcasts or video as text and want synthetic voice inside the editor.

Pricing: Free plan with limited AI tools; Hobbyist, Creator and Business tiers are priced per month with media hours and AI credits; Enterprise is quoted. The page showed monthly and annual figures inconsistently, so no number is given. (free plan)

Full review: #7 of 12 in our ranking · Visit Descript →

6. Fliki

Text to voice and video for content creators · United States

A text-to-video tool that bundles voices with stock media and avatars. The free plan adds a watermark and 720p export, voice cloning begins on Standard, and API access only on Premium. It suits marketers making short videos, not developers who need an audio endpoint.

Switch from ElevenLabs if your output is a narrated video and you would rather not assemble it yourself.

Pricing: Free has 3 credits a month with a watermark; Standard has 180 credits and commercial rights; Premium has 600 credits and API access; Enterprise is quoted. Tier prices did not render on the page we read. (free plan)

7. Resemble AI

Cloned voices with detection and watermarking · United States

Its pricing page and homepage now lead with deepfake detection and watermarking, and we found no synthesis rates there. The Enterprise tier lists on-premises deployment and custom model training. Ask sales whether its text-to-speech still fits before planning a migration.

Switch from ElevenLabs if you need on-premises deployment or detection of synthetic audio, and will confirm synthesis with sales.

Pricing: Flex is $0 on pay-as-you-go; Team is $350 a month or $280 billed yearly; Business is $1,000 a month or $800 billed yearly; Enterprise is quoted. The page we read lists detection rates, not synthesis rates. (free plan)

8. Deepgram

Speech APIs for voice agent builders · United States

A developer API, not a studio: no editor or voice library on its pricing page. Text-to-speech is billed per 1,000 characters on pay-as-you-go with no minimum, with published concurrency limits. It also sells speech-to-text and a voice agent API.

Switch from ElevenLabs if you call speech from code and prefer pay-as-you-go to a monthly credit plan.

Pricing: Pay-as-you-go includes $200 free credit, then Aura-2 is $0.030 per 1,000 characters and Aura-1 $0.015; the Growth plan starts at $4K a year and lowers these rates by about 10 percent. (free trial)

Full review: #8 of 12 in our ranking · Visit Deepgram →

9. Google Cloud Text-to-Speech

Per-character speech API on Google Cloud · United States

Billed per character through a Google Cloud account, with billing enabled before use. Voices range from WaveNet to Chirp 3 HD, an instant custom voice is a separate SKU, and Gemini-TTS is billed per token in preview. There is no studio interface for non-developers.

Switch from ElevenLabs if your speech runs in Google Cloud and volume makes per-character billing cheaper than credits.

Pricing: Pay-as-you-go per character: Standard and WaveNet US$4 per million, Neural2 US$16, Chirp 3 HD US$30, Studio US$160, instant custom voice US$60; monthly free quotas of 1 to 4 million characters by voice type. (free plan)

10. Amazon Polly

Pay-as-you-go text to speech on AWS · United States

Pay-as-you-go per character inside AWS, and you may cache and replay generated speech at no extra cost. Its voice table spans many languages, with generative, long-form, neural and standard engines. Cloning and a web studio are not part of the pricing page.

Switch from ElevenLabs if your workloads already run on AWS and you want to cache speech and pay per character.

Pricing: Per million characters: Standard $4, Neural $16, Generative $30, Long-form $100. Free monthly allowance is 5 million standard characters; neural, long-form and generative quotas last 12 months. (free plan)

11. Azure AI Speech

Neural voices and custom voice on Azure · United States

One Azure service covering speech-to-text, text-to-speech and translation, billed per character for synthesis. A free F0 tier gives 0.5 million neural characters a month. Language and voice support is published per locale, which helps when you need a specific regional voice.

Switch from ElevenLabs if you are standardised on Microsoft Azure and need many locales under one contract.

Pricing: Free tier F0 includes 0.5 million neural characters a month; paid use is per million characters by voice type, with commitment tiers for volume. Rates vary by region and currency, so none are quoted here. (free plan)

When ElevenLabs is still the right choice

Stay if you need expressive voices in many languages through one vendor, and the credit model matches your volume. The docs list Eleven v4 with 90+ languages and 10,000 characters per request, plus MP3, PCM and telephony formats. Creators and developers who use the history API and API tiers daily will lose little by staying.

What to expect when you switch from ElevenLabs

  1. Keep the originals, not just the output

Download the audio you still need and keep the original recordings behind any cloned voice. We found no voice-model export in the pages we read, so a clone usually means recording and training again with the new vendor.

  2. Spend the credits before you change plan

Credits are forfeited if you downgrade or close the account, and the terms say the same for a closed account. Time the switch to the end of a billing period, and run both vendors on one project first.

  3. Re-test pronunciation and length

Character limits per request differ between engines. Pronunciation dictionaries, SSML support and output formats such as MP3 or PCM at your sample rate need a listening test on your own scripts.

Questions and answers

Can I download everything I generated in ElevenLabs?

Not fully. The history API lists generated audio with filters and up to 1,000 items per page, but music and sound effects are excluded, and the page we read does not describe a download endpoint. Download what matters before you cancel.

What happens to unused credits when I cancel ElevenLabs?

They are forfeited. The pricing page says downgrading or cancelling forfeits unused credits, and the terms say closing or terminating an account forfeits them. Rollover otherwise lasts up to two months, capped at three times the monthly quota.

Do I need a paid plan to use ElevenLabs output commercially?

Yes. The terms limit free users to non-commercial purposes and the Free plan lists no commercial licence. Starter is the first plan with one, so any alternative should be checked for the same line on its own pricing page.

Can I move a cloned voice to another vendor?

We found no export of a cloned voice model in the pages we read, so assume you cannot. Keep the original recordings, since the terms describe Input as recordings and text you provide, and retrain with the new vendor.

Which alternatives bill per character instead of credits?

Google Cloud Text-to-Speech, Amazon Polly, Azure AI Speech and Deepgram. Google, Amazon and Azure list prices per million characters, Deepgram per 1,000, and all four are built for developers who call an API rather than use a studio.

Do alternatives cover as many languages as ElevenLabs?

Check language by language. The ElevenLabs docs list 90+ languages for Eleven v4 and 29 for Multilingual v2, while the WellSaid plans we read list English voices. Amazon Polly publishes a per-voice language table to compare against.

Is ElevenLabs a US company?

Its terms name Eleven Labs Inc. with a New York address and New York governing law. Check the entity on your order form if your procurement rules depend on where a vendor is established.
