HeyGen alternatives: 11 compared

Buyers look past HeyGen when credits run out before the month does, when legal objects to the training license in its terms, or when they want a tool built for ads, training or generative clips rather than presenter video. Most compare Synthesia and Colossyan first, then Vyond or AI Studios.

Short answer: The closest replacements for HeyGen in our AI video generators ranking are Synthesia, Colossyan and AI Studios. Choose Synthesia if you want presenter video for training and are fine with SSO and SCORM sitting on a quoted plan. All 11 alternatives below are ranked products from Best AI Video Generators in 2026, and each says where it differs from HeyGen and when HeyGen is still the better choice.

Visibility in our rankings can be paid for. Payment moves a vendor's position within the shortlist; it never adds a vendor, and it never changes a word of the review or of this page. The first three alternatives go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow in their ranked order. How it works: placement disclosure · editorial process.

Why buyers look past HeyGen

  1. Credits pay for everything

Every paid HeyGen plan carries a monthly credit allocation shared across features, and the cost of a video varies with the model, the duration and the complexity. Pro tiers run from 1,000 credits at $49 to 100,000 at $4,300. Teams that cannot forecast usage often start comparing.

  2. Content may train the models

HeyGen's terms license your content to the company, including to train or improve its AI models, and call the license irrevocable. The privacy policy lets you object to training, but by contacting the company. Legal and procurement teams often ask for that to be switched off by default.

  3. Free output is for evaluation

The terms limit video made on the Free plan to personal, non-commercial and internal evaluation use. It cannot be used for advertising or client work. The plan allows 3 videos a month of up to a minute, so it works as a trial, not as a way to publish.

When HeyGen is still the right choice

HeyGen is still the right choice when a team wants presenter video, translation in 175+ languages and team features without a sales call. Business is $149 a month plus $20 per seat and lists SAML SSO, SCORM export, LMS integrations and collaboration. If your legal team accepts the training clause, or you send the opt-out request, the product is hard to beat on openness.

What to expect when you switch from HeyGen

  1. Credits do not travel

HeyGen credits expire if the subscription lapses: unused credits do not carry over after cancellation. Monthly subscribers keep unused credits for one more month, and annual subscribers accumulate them until renewal. Spend the balance before you cancel, and plan the cut-over date around your billing cycle.

  2. Avatars are not portable

Avatars and voice clones are built inside each vendor's platform. We found no export of a custom HeyGen avatar on its pricing page, so assume you will record a new one. Ask any alternative to put its avatar and voice-clone terms and the identity check in writing before you commit.

  3. Cancel and ask for deletion

Cancelling stops the next renewal, and you keep paid features until the cycle ends. HeyGen does not refund charges already paid. Deleted data stays in backups for 60 days before it is erased, and the policy says deletion requests are acted on within 72 hours.

Questions and answers

Does HeyGen train its AI on my videos?

Its terms license your content to HeyGen for operating the service and for training or improving its AI models. The privacy policy says you may object to training by contacting the company by email. It is not a toggle in the product.

What happens to unused HeyGen credits when I cancel?

They expire. HeyGen states that credits do not carry over after cancellation, and that you keep them only until the end of the current billing cycle. Monthly plans roll unused credits over for one more month, and annual plans accumulate them until renewal.

Can I get a refund when I leave HeyGen?

Not for time already paid. The terms say that if you cancel before the end of the subscription period, charges already paid are not refunded, and you keep access until that period ends. Pricing can also change at any time once updated pricing is posted.

Is video from the HeyGen Free plan usable commercially?

No. The terms limit Free plan output to personal, non-commercial and internal evaluation use, and forbid advertising, client work and revenue-generating products. Watermark removal and 1080p export start on the Creator plan at $29 a month.

Which HeyGen plan do I need for SSO and SCORM?

Business, at $149 a month plus $20 per extra seat. It lists SAML SSO, SCORM export, LMS integrations and workspace collaboration. SCIM provisioning, multi-workspace control and invoice billing are listed on Enterprise, which is quoted.

How long does HeyGen keep my data after I delete it?

Up to 60 days in backups. The privacy policy says deleted information stays in disaster-recovery backups for 60 days and is then permanently erased. It also says it tries to act on a deletion request within 72 hours.
