Buffer alternatives: 12 compared

Teams look past Buffer when per-channel billing grows with every account they connect, when approvals and multiple users are tied to the Team plan, or when they want listening and deeper reporting. Most go to Metricool, SocialPilot or Later for cheaper bundles, or to Agorapulse and Sprout Social for inbox and reporting depth.

Short answer: The closest replacements for Buffer in our social media management software ranking are Metricool, SocialPilot and Later. Choose Metricool if you manage several brands and want one price per brand instead of per channel. All 12 alternatives below are ranked products from Best Social Media Management Software in 2026, and each says where it differs from Buffer and when Buffer is still the better choice.

Why buyers look past Buffer

  1. Every channel is billed

Buffer's paid plans are charged per channel: Essentials is $5 a channel per month on yearly billing, Team is $10. Its help center says that moving up from Free means paying for all connected channels, including the three you started with. Agencies and brands with many accounts see the total climb channel by channel.

  2. Collaboration is a Team feature

On Buffer's pricing page, Free and Essentials include one user account. Unlimited team members, access levels and content approval workflows appear only on Team. A marketer who needs a client or manager to sign off on posts pays the higher per-channel rate for every channel.

  3. Scope stops at publishing, engagement and reports

Buffer's feature menu covers Create, Publish, Insights, Community, Collaborate, Start Page, an AI Assistant and an API. It lists no listening module. Reports with CSV, PDF or markdown export are not on Free, which keeps 30 days of analytics history.

What each alternative does differently

When Buffer is still the right choice

Stay on Buffer if you run a handful of channels and one or two people. Per-channel billing lets you remove a channel when a client leaves, the Free plan stays available after cancelling, and the feature set is narrow on purpose. The price only becomes an argument once you pass roughly ten channels or need approvals.

What to expect when you switch from Buffer

  1. Cancelling keeps the account, not the plan

Buffer's help center says that after cancelling you keep the Free plan, plan access runs to the end of the billing period, and extra channels lock but stay connected. A reinstatement is possible before the period ends. Start the new tool before you cancel so the queue never goes empty.

  2. Export analytics before you downgrade

Buffer's pricing page shows Reports with CSV, PDF or markdown export as not included on Free, and Free keeps 30 days of analytics history. Export reports while you are still on a paid plan. Scheduled posts need re-creating in the new tool, since we found no bulk export of the queue.

Questions and answers

Does cancelling Buffer delete my account?

No, cancelling returns you to the Free plan, which allows up to three channels. Buffer's help center says channels beyond three lock but remain connected, and the account owner is the only person who can cancel or delete.

Can I get a refund when I leave?

Yes, within limits: Buffer's refund policy covers monthly plans within 7 days of starting a subscription and annual plans within 30 days. After that window, the plan runs to the end of the billing period without a refund.

Can I export my analytics from Buffer?

Yes, on paid plans: Reports offer CSV, PDF or markdown export on Essentials and Team, but not on Free. Free keeps 30 days of history, so export before downgrading.

What counts as a channel in Buffer's billing?

Each connected social account is one channel. Buffer's help center counts a Facebook Page, Facebook Group, X profile, LinkedIn Page and LinkedIn profile as five channels, so a single brand can use more slots than expected.

Will I pay for my three free channels if I upgrade first?

Yes, Buffer charges for every connected channel once you upgrade, including the three from the Free plan. Price any alternative at your real channel count.

Which alternatives avoid per-channel pricing?

Metricool prices by brand, Later by social set, SocialPilot by account bundle, and Agorapulse and Hootsuite by user. The right choice depends on whether you have many channels or many people.
