Hotjar alternatives: 12 compared

Teams look past Hotjar because it now sits inside Contentsquare, new accounts are no longer opened under the Hotjar name, and the contract terms are Contentsquare's. Most go to PostHog, Amplitude or Mixpanel for replay inside a product analytics tool, or to Matomo for heatmaps in a self-hosted analytics suite.

Short answer: The closest replacements for Hotjar in our web analytics software ranking are PostHog, Matomo and Amplitude. Choose PostHog if you want replay, surveys and product analytics in one tool and your team can handle events. All 12 alternatives below are ranked products from Best Web Analytics Software in 2026, and each says where it differs from Hotjar and when Hotjar is still the better choice.

Visibility in our rankings can be paid for. Payment moves a vendor's position within the shortlist; it never adds a vendor, and it never changes a word of the review or of this page. How it works: placement disclosure · editorial process.

Hotjar at a glance

  • Free option: Free plan
  • Built for: Teams that want to see, not just count, how visitors use a page
  • Wrong for: A team wanting a single independent tool should look elsewhere; buying Hotjar today means signing up for Contentsquare, even though its free and Growth plans can be started without talking to sales.

Facts from our web analytics software ranking, last checked October 8, 2026.

Why buyers look past Hotjar

  1. Hotjar is now Contentsquare

Hotjar's own site redirects to Contentsquare, which says the two platforms have merged. It also says new users cannot create Hotjar accounts and should sign up for Contentsquare. A team that picked Hotjar as an independent vendor now buys from a larger one.

  2. Enterprise contract terms

Contentsquare's master services agreement renews orders automatically unless written notice comes at least 90 days before term end, and calls order forms non-cancellable. Fees can rise at renewal by the greater of 3% or the consumer price index. Whether this applies to a self-serve plan is unclear.

  3. A behavior tool, not an analytics suite

Contentsquare's Hotjar page lists heatmaps, session replay, surveys, error monitoring and funnels. It does not list traffic or acquisition reporting, so teams usually run a second tool for that and look for one product that covers both.

When Hotjar is still the right choice

Stay if heatmaps, session replay and surveys in one hosted tool are the whole job. Contentsquare's Hotjar page lists a free plan of 200,000 sessions a month with heatmaps, replay, error monitoring, funnels and 100 survey responses, plus AI summaries of recordings. A UX team that works from these views gains little by splitting them across tools.

What to expect when you switch from Hotjar

  1. Confirm what happens to your account

Contentsquare says new users cannot open Hotjar accounts. We could not read what it promises to existing accounts, so ask in writing about plan changes, renewal dates and how long recordings, heatmaps and survey responses remain available.

  2. Export what you want to keep

Under the master services agreement, visitor data processed through the service is permanently deleted on termination unless the customer instructs otherwise. Save survey responses, key recordings and heatmap screenshots first. We did not verify Hotjar's export formats.

  3. Check the notice date

If you hold an order form, the agreement asks for written notice at least 90 days before term end to stop renewal. Put that date in your calendar, run the new tool in parallel for one cycle, then remove the old tracking script.

Questions and answers

Can new customers still sign up for Hotjar?

No. Contentsquare's Hotjar page says new users cannot create Hotjar accounts and should sign up for Contentsquare instead. Hotjar's own site address redirects to that page.

What does the free plan include now?

Contentsquare's page lists 200,000 sessions a month, heatmaps, session replay, error monitoring, funnels and 100 survey responses a month. It states the free plan previously allowed 35 sessions a day. We could not read the paid price table.

How much notice do I need to cancel?

Under Contentsquare's master services agreement, written notice at least 90 days before the end of the term stops automatic renewal. Order forms are described as non-cancellable and non-refundable unless the order says otherwise. A self-serve plan may differ, so confirm yours.

How much can the price rise at renewal?

Annual fee adjustments at renewal are capped at the greater of 3% or the consumer price index, according to the master services agreement. Contentsquare's terms of service also promise at least 30 days of notice before fee changes.

What happens to my visitor data when I leave?

The master services agreement says all visitor data processed through the service is permanently deleted on termination unless you instruct otherwise. Request exports of surveys and any recordings you need before the termination date.

Which alternatives include free session replay?

Amplitude and Mixpanel each list 10,000 monthly session replays on their free plans, and PostHog lists a free replay allowance. Heap sells replay and heatmaps as add-ons from Pro, and Statcounter sells replay as an add-on.
