Where they differ
Per-resource grants or a device mesh
Twingate was designed from the outset to grant access to a single resource, never the wider network, and adds device posture checks; its console makes those rules easy to define and review. Tailscale connects devices in a mesh and restricts them with access control lists, which takes some engineering capacity to manage. For granular policy without writing it yourself, Twingate is ahead.

Both avoid a traditional gateway, and either can be working the same afternoon. Tailscale is the quicker of the two: connections need close to no configuration, and two machines are securely linked in minutes where a conventional VPN gateway takes hours to set up correctly.
