Where they differ

Per-resource grants or a device mesh

Twingate's controller builds a list for each user of the specific resources they may reach, and connectors inside private networks keep only outbound connections, so no inbound ports are opened. Tailscale connects devices in a peer-to-peer mesh and restricts them with a policy file, which takes some engineering capacity to manage. For granular policy without writing it yourself, Twingate is ahead.

Both avoid a traditional gateway, and either can be working the same afternoon. Tailscale says a tailnet can be deployed in minutes with little configuration, and it arrives with default access policies in place. Subnet routers then extend it to devices that cannot run the client. That low friction is why, in the site's view, engineering teams default to it.
