Teams look past Zoho Desk when the free edition runs out at three agents, when chat, phone and light agents are spread across higher editions, or when they want a larger ecosystem than Zoho's. Most go to Freshdesk, Help Scout or Zendesk, or to Zammad to self-host.

What each alternative does differently
1. Freshdesk
Ticketing and automation at a moderate price, chat in Omni · United States
Per-agent pricing with the Growth plan at $19 an agent a month billed annually. The Freddy AI Agent includes the first 500 sessions, then $49 per 100 more. Day passes at $2 and connector tasks at $80 per 5,000 are sold as add-ons, so extras are metered separately.
Switch from Zoho Desk if you want a mainstream per-agent help desk with AI sessions included up front.
Pricing: Per agent per month on published tiers, from $19 billed annually for email-centered Freshdesk or $29 for Freshdesk Omni with chat and social channels; 500 AI agent sessions are included once, then sold in packs of 100. (free trial)

2. Zendesk
The most complete help desk suite, priced for scale · United States
Sold per agent a month, billed annually, with the Support plan covering email and ticketing only. Suite Team adds messaging, live chat and AI agents, and higher plans add copilot tools and sandboxes. The product is larger than Zoho Desk, and its tiers climb accordingly.
Switch from Zoho Desk if you need messaging, voice and AI under one vendor and have outgrown a small help desk.
Pricing: Per agent per month on published Suite tiers, with AI agent resolutions billed beyond a small monthly allowance per agent, and Copilot, workforce management and quality tools sold as add-ons. (free trial)

8. Deskpro
Help desk offered as cloud, private cloud or on-premises · United Kingdom
Published per-agent cloud plans: Team at $39 a month with a 5-agent minimum, and Professional at $59 with a 10-agent minimum. Professional adds Lite agents and Deskpro AI. The minimums make it a poor fit for a three-person desk, unlike Zoho's free edition.
Switch from Zoho Desk if you have at least 5 agents and want a configurable help desk with Lite agents.
Pricing: Published per-agent cloud tiers from $39 a month for Team through Enterprise, each with a minimum seat count, plus a separately quoted Private edition for on-premises or dedicated hosting and discounts for nonprofits and education. (none)

Switch from Zoho Desk if you want chat, tickets and phone in one per-agent plan from $15.
Pricing: Published per-agent tiers from about $15 a month billed annually for Small up to Enterprise, with social channels and call center depth reserved for upper tiers. (free trial)

10. Gorgias
Ecommerce help desk built around Shopify orders · United States
Plans are sized by tickets, not agents: Starter at $40 a month for 50 tickets, Basic with 300 and Pro with 2,000. Overage is charged per ticket and the AI agent is billed on top. A team with many agents and low ticket volume may pay less than on per-seat plans.
Switch from Zoho Desk if you have many agents but a modest ticket count and want volume-based billing.
Pricing: Monthly plans sized by billable tickets, from a low entry plan, with per-ticket overage and AI agent interactions billed separately. (free trial)

Enterprise service platform on the Salesforce CRM · United States
Per-user pricing starting at $25 for Starter Suite and $100 for Pro Suite, billed annually, with a contract required and transaction fees applying. It sits inside Salesforce's CRM platform. It is a CRM-platform product, not a standalone desk, so it suits teams already on Salesforce.

Questions and answers
Does Zoho Desk have a free plan?
Yes. The free edition provides 3 agents with limited capabilities and no billing. A 15-day trial of any paid edition ends with an automatic downgrade to Free, and light agents are not available on it.
Which Zoho Desk features need a higher edition?
Live chat via Zoho SalesIQ is in Enterprise and telephony starts at Professional. Light agents are offered on Professional and Enterprise, and the free edition lacks automation, multi-department support, SLAs and AI features.
Which alternatives start cheaper per agent?
Zammad starts at €7 for up to 5 agents billed annually, LiveAgent at $15, Freshdesk at $19, HappyFox at $24, and Help Scout and Front at $25. Check currency, annual billing and seat caps, since these differ.
Can I self-host a replacement for Zoho Desk?
Yes, with Zammad, which is released under the AGPL-3.0 licence. In the self-hosted version you run the servers and are responsible for updates, backups and availability, according to Zammad's pricing page.
Can I export my tickets from Zoho Desk?
We could not confirm it. Zoho's help center is rendered client-side and did not load for us, so ask Zoho support for the backup options of your edition and test an import into the new tool.
Is Zoho an Indian or an American company?
Zoho's contact page lists its Chennai office in India and several offices in Texas, USA. Category data lists India as the headquarters. We did not find an ownership statement on the pages we checked.
