Clio alternatives: 11 compared

Firms look past Clio when the features they need sit one tier up, when intake costs extra, or when they want a single flat quote instead of four plans. Most go to MyCase or PracticePanther for published small-firm tiers, to Smokeball for document automation, or to CARET Legal and CosmoLex for accounting-led platforms.

Short answer: The closest replacements for Clio in our legal practice management software ranking are MyCase, PracticePanther and Smokeball. Choose MyCase if you want published small-firm tiers with intake and a legal CRM on the middle plan. All 11 alternatives below are ranked products from Best Legal Practice Management Software in 2026, and each says where it differs from Clio and when Clio is still the better choice.

Visibility in our rankings can be paid for. Payment moves a vendor's position within the shortlist; it never adds a vendor, and it never changes a word of the review or of this page. How it works: placement disclosure · editorial process.

Facts from our legal practice management software ranking, last checked October 8, 2026.

Why buyers look past Clio

  1. Useful features sit on higher tiers

On the Clio pricing page, automated workflows, custom reporting, scheduled reports, matter budgets and multi-currency billing begin on Signature, and the starting price of $49 per user a month is the Starter plan. Starter also has no client portal, no conflict check and no document templates.

  2. Intake is a separate product below Elite

Clio Grow, the intake and CRM product, is an add-on that Clio lists as included only in Elite. A firm that wants lead capture and consultation booking with its practice management pays for an add-on or the top plan.

  3. Payment fees are the same on every plan

Clio shows card payments at 2.95 percent (3.75 percent for Amex), eCheck and ACH at 1 percent and Affirm at 4.95 percent on all four plans. A firm that processes a lot of client payments can compare the processing terms of other tools.

When Clio is still the right choice

Stay on Clio if you rely on its integrations, or you already use the plan that holds the features you need. Trust accounting, bank sync, reconciliation and financial reports are included on every plan, and AI comes with Core and above. A firm that has paid for Signature or Elite and uses what it contains has little to gain from moving.

What to expect when you switch from Clio

  1. Request the export before you cancel

Clio says you can retrieve contacts, matters and financial records in open, nonproprietary formats while the account is active or within 90 days of cancellation. Ask for the files first and check trust ledgers against your last reconciliation before the new system goes live.

  2. Time the cancellation to the term

Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current term, monthly or annual. Overlap the two systems for one billing cycle, and keep Clio running until the final trust reconciliation has been done in the new tool.

Questions and answers

Can I export my data from Clio?

Yes. Clio states that contacts, matters and financial records can be retrieved in open, nonproprietary formats while your account is active or within 90 days of cancellation. Request the export early and verify the trust ledgers.

When does my Clio cancellation take effect?

At the end of your current term. Clio says you can cancel at any time, and that this applies to monthly and annual terms. Annual customers should time the notice to the renewal date.

Is trust accounting included in every Clio plan?

Yes. Trust account management and trust and operating reconciliation are marked included on all four plans, Starter to Elite. A rival that reserves trust accounting for a top tier is a step back for firms that depend on it.

Is AI part of the Clio subscription?

Yes, from Core upward, as part of the plan rather than an add-on. Clio also says firm data is never used for AI training. Starter has no AI, so a firm leaving Starter will not lose it.

Does Clio publish its prices?

Partly. The pricing page states that plans start at $49 per user a month and lists four plans, Starter, Core, Signature and Elite. Prices for the higher plans are given through Get pricing or a demo.

What do I lose if I leave the Clio ecosystem?

Clio lists more than 300 app integration partners. Check that the tools you rely on, such as accounting or e-filing, connect to the replacement. Court e-filing is pay per filing on every Clio plan.
