GoDaddy alternatives: 11 compared

Owners look past GoDaddy when the real cost of a name is spread over renewals and paid add-ons, when they want the lowest long-run price, or when they want DNS and registration held somewhere less crowded. Most go to Namecheap for a familiar name at a lower price, to Porkbun or Cloudflare Registrar for plain pricing, and to Squarespace Domains for one stated price.

Short answer: The closest replacements for GoDaddy in our domain registrars ranking are Namecheap, Porkbun and Cloudflare Registrar. Choose Namecheap if you want another well-known registrar with a similar account layout, usually at a lower list price. All 11 alternatives below are ranked products from Best Domain Registrars in 2026, and each says where it differs from GoDaddy and when GoDaddy is still the better choice.

Visibility in our rankings can be paid for. Payment moves a vendor's position within the shortlist; it never adds a vendor, and it never changes a word of the review or of this page. The first three alternatives go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow in their ranked order. Why buyers look past GoDaddy

  1. Renewal cost is not the whole bill

GoDaddy's help page on renewal costs says the renewal price shown in the portfolio excludes add-ons such as Domain Protection and Premium DNS. The domain price, the protection tier and the DNS product are three line items, so the cost of keeping one name is higher than the figure in the portfolio column.

  2. Leaving takes a checklist

The transfer page tells you to unlock the domain, switch off Domain Privacy and downgrade Domain Protection to none before the move. A domain also cannot leave within 60 days of a registration, transfer or contact change if that lock was accepted, or within 120 days when it is part of a bundle.

  3. Bundled domains are tied to other products

GoDaddy's help pages say a domain in a bundle can only be cancelled by cancelling the whole bundle, and that cancelling a domain stops every product that uses it. For owners who bought a domain, site and email together, a registrar change is therefore a decision about three products.

What each alternative does differently

1. Namecheap

Large low-price registrar with free privacy · United States

The nearest match in familiarity: a large US registrar that also sells hosting and email in the same account. Free Domain Privacy is added on eligible names. Its own notice lifts regular .com prices on November 1, 2026, so the cheap headline is not permanent either.

Switch from GoDaddy if you want another well-known registrar with a similar account layout, usually at a lower list price.

Pricing: Per domain per year; free Domain Privacy is added to eligible registrations, renewals and transfers, and from November 1, 2026 regular .com pricing is $15.98 to register or transfer and $19.98 to renew, before the ICANN fee. (none)

2. Porkbun

Low-markup registrar with free privacy and open DNS · United States

A smaller registrar that publishes its .COM, .NET and .ORG prices on one page and bundles WHOIS privacy, SSL and forwarding into each domain. Nameservers can point anywhere. Support is email-first, with a stated average reply of about six hours, and there are no portfolio-scale controls.

Switch from GoDaddy if you want published prices and privacy included on every name, and can live with slower email support.

Pricing: Per domain per year; the pricing page lists .COM from $11.08, .NET from $12.52 and .ORG from $7.98, and WHOIS privacy, SSL and forwarding are included. (none)

3. Cloudflare Registrar

At-cost domains tied to Cloudflare DNS · United States

Sells at the registry and ICANN cost with no markup, so renewals never climb above that. The condition is that DNS stays on Cloudflare nameservers, and Unicode domain names are unsupported. A transfer in requires the domain to be added to Cloudflare and active there first.

Switch from GoDaddy if your domain already uses Cloudflare DNS and you want renewals at cost instead of a retail price.

Pricing: Registration, transfer and renewal are charged at cost, with no markup over what registries and ICANN charge; WHOIS redaction and DNSSEC are free. (none)

4. Squarespace Domains

Former Google Domains, bundled with Squarespace sites · United States

Takes over the former Google Domains customers. It states one price with taxes and fees included, plus privacy, DNSSEC, forwarding and two-factor authentication. The account sits inside the site-builder platform, and the pages we read show no per-extension price table before you search.

Switch from GoDaddy if you want one stated price with privacy and DNS inside it, and you may already use Squarespace.

Pricing: Per domain per year; the page states the price shown is the price paid, with taxes and fees included and WHOIS privacy, SSL, DNS, forwarding and two-factor authentication at no extra charge. (none)

5. Dynadot

Published price grid and tooling for portfolios · United States

A founder-run US registrar with a full price table covering register, renew and transfer, and an API for bulk work. Free privacy and DNS come with the account. The table is dense, with restore and grace-period columns, and it suits people who already manage many names.

Switch from GoDaddy if you manage many domains and want a published price grid and an API instead of upsell screens.

Pricing: Per domain per year; the price table lists .com at $10.88 to register, renew and transfer, with tiered columns for larger accounts. (none)

6. Name.com

Denver registrar owned by Identity Digital · United States

A Denver registrar owned by Identity Digital. A transfer in includes a free renewal year, Whois privacy and an SSL certificate. Prices appear only inside its search tool, and the domain must be at least 60 days old with privacy off before it can be moved.

Switch from GoDaddy if you want the transfer itself to include a year of renewal, and accept prices seen only in search.

Pricing: Per domain per year; transfers include free domain renewal, Domain Safe with WHOIS privacy and an SSL certificate, and prices appear in its search results. (none)

7. Hover

Uncluttered registrar from Tucows with human support · Canada

A Canadian registrar run as a service of Tucows, with few upsells, free WHOIS privacy and support by phone, email and chat. List prices are higher than the budget names, and the volume discount starts at only $0.25 per domain at ten names.

Switch from GoDaddy if you prefer a quiet storefront and phone support over the lowest price.

Pricing: Per domain per year, billed at renewal; volume discounts of $0.25 to $5.00 per domain per year apply from 10 to 400 or more domains, and WHOIS privacy is free. (none)

8. Gandi

French registrar with a long history and wide TLD list · France

A Paris registrar with more than 750 extensions and a free owner change. The .com page shows an $11.00 transfer-in but $38.38 per year to renew, with lower rates only after you buy $600 or more in a year. Cloud and hosting products share the site.

Switch from GoDaddy if you need uncommon extensions or free ownership changes, and spend enough for the discount grids to apply.

Pricing: Per domain per year; the .com page lists $11.00 to register or transfer and $38.38 per year to renew, with discount grids at $600, $2,000, $6,000 and $12,000 of purchases a year. (none)

9. Sav

Domain marketplace registrar adding site-building tools · United States

A Chicago registrar and marketplace that now also sells an AI website builder. Free WHOIS privacy covers most domains and an API handles bulk work. The pages we read gave no published price table, and support is chat-first without a general phone line.

Switch from GoDaddy if you also trade domains and want a low-commission marketplace in the same account as your registrar.

Pricing: Per domain per year; free WHOIS privacy is included for most domains, and registration prices appear in search rather than on the pages we read. (none)

10. TransIP

Dutch registrar with automatic DNSSEC and an API · Netherlands

A Dutch registrar and hosting company, part of team.blue, with over 450 extensions, automatic DNSSEC and an API. Prices are in euros excluding VAT, and the first-year rates shown are promotional. The pages we read did not mention WHOIS privacy.

Switch from GoDaddy if you are in Europe and want euro billing, an API and automatic DNSSEC from a local provider.

Pricing: Per domain per year in euros excluding VAT; the page shows promotional first-year rates of EUR 8.99 for .com and EUR 7.99 for .eu, over 450 extensions. (none)

Full review: #8 of 12 in our ranking · Visit TransIP →

11. INWX

German registrar with ccTLD depth and registry lock · Germany

A German registrar for professionals, accredited directly for about 100 country extensions, with a trustee service for local-presence domains, registry lock, dynamic DNS and an API. The English site's tier table is aimed at 250 or more domains, so a single-name price is hard to read.

Switch from GoDaddy if you hold country-code domains or need registry lock, a trustee service and an API.

Pricing: Per domain per year; the public tier table lists .com at $15.72 for accounts above 250 domains, net of VAT, and the standard price list is loaded interactively. (none)

When GoDaddy is still the right choice

GoDaddy is still a sound choice when one name, one site and one mailbox should live in a single account with phone and chat support. Domain Privacy is free on eligible domains, the Ultimate tier gives 90 days to renew after a failed payment, and the portfolio shows renewal prices. If you use the bundled products, moving gains little.

What to expect when you switch from GoDaddy

  1. Prepare the domain and get the code

Unlock the domain, switch off Domain Privacy and downgrade Domain Protection to none, as the transfer page lists. The authorization code is shown in the portfolio and emailed to the registrant. For many domains, export the list as a CSV with authorization codes included. The export can be downloaded for 28 days.

  2. Expect days, not minutes, unless you approve

GoDaddy's pages say outbound transfers take 5 to 7 days, and that it approves them automatically within seven days unless you cancel. Approving the transfer yourself from the outgoing transfers page should finish it in 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the new registrar.

  3. Protect the DNS and mail records

If the domain uses GoDaddy nameservers, its DNS zone sits in your GoDaddy account, and changing nameservers can break the site or email. Copy every A, CNAME, MX and TXT record into the new provider first, and keep at least two nameservers set on the domain.

Questions and answers

How long does a transfer away from GoDaddy take?

Usually 5 to 7 days. GoDaddy's pages say it approves an outbound transfer automatically within seven days, and that approving it yourself should finish it in 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the receiving registrar.

Do I need an authorization code to leave GoDaddy?

Yes for most domains. The code appears in your portfolio under the transfer option and is also emailed to the registrant. For .uk domains the help page says no code is needed and the IPS tag of the new registrar is entered instead.

Why does GoDaddy say my domain cannot be transferred?

Most often it is locked or too new. Domains cannot move within 60 days of a registration, transfer or contact change when that lock was accepted, and bundled domains cannot move within 120 days of registration. Unlock the domain in its settings first.

What happens to my website and email if I cancel a GoDaddy domain?

They stop working. GoDaddy's cancellation page says every product tied to the domain, such as a site or mailbox, stops once the domain is deleted. A mistaken cancellation can be undone within 120 hours at no extra cost.

Is GoDaddy's domain privacy free?

On eligible domains, yes. The help page says Domain Privacy is applied automatically and replaces the registrant details with those of Domains By Proxy. Domain Protection is a separate paid product, and from 21 August 2025 most public records show only registrant details when privacy is off.

Can I renew a GoDaddy domain after it expires?

Often, but there may be a restore fee. The expiry page says renewal can be possible after the date, depending on the extension, and that restore costs may apply. Ultimate Domain Protection allows renewal up to 90 days after expiry at no extra cost.

How do I see what GoDaddy will charge to renew?

Add the Renewal price column to your domain portfolio. GoDaddy states that the figure excludes add-ons such as Domain Protection and Premium DNS, so check your protection tier separately before comparing it with another registrar's price.
