Cloudinary alternatives: 12 compared

Teams look past Cloudinary when the library is for marketers and not for developers, when one shared credit pool makes the bill hard to forecast, or when brand portals and approvals matter more than image delivery. Most move to Bynder or Canto for a marketing library, or to Adobe Experience Manager Assets when delivery has to stay in the same product.

Short answer: The closest replacements for Cloudinary in our digital asset management software ranking are Bynder, Canto and MediaValet. Choose Bynder if your marketers, not your developers, own the library and want templates and workflow in one product. All 12 alternatives below are ranked products from Best Digital Asset Management Software in 2026, and each says where it differs from Cloudinary and when Cloudinary is still the better choice.

Visibility in our rankings can be paid for. Payment moves a vendor's position within the shortlist; it never adds a vendor, and it never changes a word of the review or of this page. The first three alternatives go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow in their ranked order. Cloudinary at a glance

  • Headquarters: United States
  • Pricing model: Free plan + usage-based
  • Pricing: Published tiers from a permanent free plan through paid monthly or annual plans priced on usage credits, with a quoted enterprise tier for high volume; the Assets DAM product is quoted separately after a 30-day free trial.
  • Free option: Free plan
  • Built for: Developer and product teams serving images and video at scale
  • Wrong for: A marketing team that needs brand guideline portals, formal approval chains and non-technical usability should look at Bynder, Frontify or Canto instead; Cloudinary is built around a website's or app's media pipeline, not a marketing department's library.
  • Place in our ranking: #7 of 13

Why buyers look past Cloudinary

  1. Storage, processing and delivery share one credit pool

On the pricing page one credit equals 1,000 transformations, 1 GB of managed storage or 1 GB of image bandwidth. The FAQ calls the limits soft: past them Cloudinary asks you to upgrade. A marketing team cannot easily predict the monthly draw.

  2. Plan steps carry features, not only volume

Plus costs $99 a month for 225 credits and Advanced $249 for 600, with lower yearly rates. A custom domain (CNAME) is listed from Advanced, and SSO and a provisioning API only under Enterprise. The step up is therefore often about access, not capacity.

  3. The DAM is a second product on the same site

The pricing page splits Image and Video APIs from Digital Asset Management. The DAM shows custom pricing and a 30-day trial for 3 users and 25 GB. Buyers who only want a library may find the developer platform behind it more than they need.

Switch from Cloudinary if your marketers, not your developers, own the library and want templates and workflow in one product.

Switch from Cloudinary if you want a library with review and approval built in, priced by team and storage.

Pricing: Quote-only, priced per organization on annual terms; a seven-day free trial starts from a sign-up form rather than a sales call. (free trial)

Adobe's documentation describes Assets as a Cloud Service as a platform for DAM and Dynamic Media, the part that delivers responsive images and video. Packaged as Prime or Ultimate. It is the closest match when delivery must stay with the library, but it is an enterprise purchase.

Switch from Cloudinary if delivery and library must stay together and you already buy from Adobe Experience Cloud.

Pricing: Quote-only on annual enterprise contracts, packaged as Assets Prime or Assets Ultimate with Dynamic Media as an add-on, and usually sold alongside Adobe Experience Cloud; no published price list and no self-serve free trial. (none)

Fast search and sharing, now inside the Smartsheet portfolio · United States

Switch from Cloudinary if you want rights management and duplicate detection, and run content on Acquia or Drupal.

Pricing: Quote-only, priced per organization on annual terms based on users, storage and feature needs; no published price list and no free trial. (none)

9. IntelligenceBank

Digital asset management combined with marketing approvals and compliance review · Australia

Switch from Cloudinary if you want review and compliance steps attached to the library and a stated starting price.

Pricing: A base DAM package price is published on the website, billed annually; larger packages and add-on modules such as compliance review are quoted separately. (none)

10. Frontify

Brand guidelines first, with the asset library underneath · Switzerland

Charges by monthly active users, averaged over six months so that short spikes do not move the bill, and recalculated yearly. Brand guidelines, templates and analytics sit above the asset library. There is no fixed price list, and the page offers no developer delivery product.

Switch from Cloudinary if guidelines and templates matter as much as files, and only active users should be billed.

Pricing: Quote-only on a monthly-active-users pricing model, billed annually after a demo call; no published price list and no free trial on the pricing page. (none)

Full review: #5 of 13 in our ranking · Visit Frontify →

11. Aprimo

Marketing operations suite with digital asset management inside · United States

A marketing operations suite where DAM is one product beside planning, spend, personalization and productivity. Its newer Content Portfolio Management says it governs content on websites, partner portals and cloud storage without migrating it. It suits large marketing organizations and is far from a developer media tool.

Switch from Cloudinary if you need campaign planning and content governance across many systems, in a large marketing team.

Pricing: Quote-only, priced per organization on annual terms based on chosen products and user count; a minimum contract term of around twelve months is typical. (none)

Full review: #11 of 13 in our ranking · Visit Aprimo →

12. Portfolio DAM (formerly Extensis Portfolio)

On-premises DAM, formerly Extensis Portfolio, now run by an Axle AI subsidiary · United States

On-premise: the vendor page says Portfolio runs on a server in your network, not the public cloud, and catalogs files where they already live on network storage or cloud buckets. You run the hardware and upgrades yourself, which Cloudinary spares you.

Switch from Cloudinary if files must stay on your own servers and a cloud media service is not allowed.

Pricing: Quote-only, priced per organization; no published price list, but a 30-day evaluation system with full API access is available on request. (free trial)

When Cloudinary is still the right choice

Cloudinary stays the right choice when the main job is serving optimized images and video from a website or app. Its Free plan has no end date and covers 3 users and 25 monthly credits. If your developers already call its API and URLs, a marketing DAM would replace only the library and leave delivery to be rebuilt.

What to expect when you switch from Cloudinary

  1. Export originals first, derived files can be rebuilt

Cloudinary's backup documentation says backups hold only originals, because derived and fetched assets can be regenerated. Plan to export originals and metadata, then recreate transformations in the new tool or delivery layer.

  2. Turn on backup before you cancel

Automatic backup is off by default. Switching it on stores a copy of each new upload, and a one-time job covers older assets. Your own S3, Google Cloud or Azure storage as the target is limited to paid plans.

  3. Check the contract entity and notice

The Terms name Cloudinary Ltd. under Israeli law, Cloudinary Inc. (Delaware) or Cloudinary UK Ltd., depending on who sold you the service. Fixed-period subscriptions need prior notice not to renew, and no refund is due on termination.

Questions and answers

How do I get my files out of Cloudinary?

The archive methods create ZIP or TAR files of selected assets, either stored in your account or as a signed download link. Free accounts are blocked by default from delivering zip, rar and tagz archives. Backup to your own bucket is a second route on paid plans.

Does Cloudinary back up my uploads automatically?

No. The backup page says automatic backup is off by default. Once enabled it copies every new upload, and you can back up older assets with a one-time job. Assets deleted before backup was enabled may need a request to support.

Will I get a refund if I leave in the middle of a term?

The Terms say you are not entitled to a refund upon termination. Check your order form for the notice window, since the Terms only say fixed-period subscriptions need the applicable prior notice. Where the subscription allows termination at will, the account page or the contact form ends it.

What does Cloudinary charge for its DAM?

The pricing page shows Assets DAM as a custom plan, quoted after contact, with a free 30-day trial for 3 users and 25 GB. The developer plans are separate: Free, Plus at $99, Advanced at $249 a month, and Enterprise on request.

Can I keep my own domain for media after I switch?

Only if the new vendor serves your files. The pricing page lists custom domain (CNAME) support from Advanced, so a smaller plan serves media from Cloudinary's own domain. Plan to change embedded URLs, wherever pages or apps reference the old ones.

Is there a cheaper library for a small team?

Filecamp publishes $29 a month for 20 GB with unlimited users, and IntelligenceBank states a $567 monthly starting figure for its base DAM. Cloudinary's free plan costs nothing, but it covers developer media delivery and not a marketing library.
