Domain registrars · head to head

Namecheap vs GoDaddy

Namecheap wins for a buyer who wants the cheaper registrar and clear written rules, since it publishes its new .com prices and lets a domain leave without a fee. GoDaddy wins for an owner who wants domain, site builder, hosting and email under one login and is willing to read a longer list of paid protection tiers. Neither is the cheapest honest option.

Where they differ

Renewal pricing and the .com change

Namecheap's own notice sets regular .com prices from November 1, 2026 at $15.98 a year to register or transfer and $19.98 to renew, before a $0.20 ICANN fee. Those are rises, but they are written down. The GoDaddy pages we fetched did not show list or renewal prices, so a buyer must check them at checkout. Where a price is stated plainly in advance, Namecheap gets the round.

Edge: Namecheap

Privacy on the public record

Both include privacy for eligible extensions at no charge. Namecheap adds a free Domain Privacy subscription with every registration, renewal, transfer and reactivation. GoDaddy turns Domain Privacy on by default and swaps the contact details for those of its partner Domains By Proxy, with On and Limited levels as well as a fully visible option. Neither charges for the basic service, and both exclude some extensions.

Edge: even

Protection beyond privacy

GoDaddy's Full Domain Protection sends alerts when a domain changes, blocks accidental transfers and keeps an activity log; Ultimate adds 90 days to renew after a failed payment with no extra recovery fee. Namecheap's Domain Vault has Silver for all domains and Titanium for .COM and .NET only, but its help text gives fewer details. GoDaddy is the clearer on what the extra tier does, though it is an upsell.

Edge: GoDaddy

Leaving with the domain

Namecheap says moving a domain out costs nothing extra, with the fee paid at the new registrar, and that it has five days to release the name; some country extensions follow other rules. GoDaddy asks you to unlock the domain, switch off privacy, downgrade protection to none and enter a one-time code. A 60-day lock can apply after a contact change, and 120 days for bundled domains.

Edge: Namecheap

DNS and records

Namecheap's domains default to BasicDNS, and a paid PremiumDNS subscription can be attached to a domain held at any registrar. Its record guide lists A, AAAA, ALIAS, CNAME, NS, SRV, TXT, MX, CAA and URL redirect types. GoDaddy's guide covers A, CNAME, MX, TXT and SPF records and points to a paid Premium DNS option for more. Namecheap documents the wider record set, which suits technical owners.

Edge: Namecheap

Everything else in the account

GoDaddy says over 80 million domain names are entrusted to it, and the same account sells a website builder, online store, hosting, SSL certificates, email and a mobile app. Namecheap also sells hosting, email and security products, and runs the Spaceship brand, but the GoDaddy account is the more complete one-stop arrangement. For a small business wanting one login for everything online, GoDaddy fits that goal better.

Edge: GoDaddy

Tally: Namecheap 3, GoDaddy 2, even 1.

When neither fits

A buyer who wants the lowest honest cost, with free WHOIS redaction and no sales flow, should look at Porkbun or Cloudflare Registrar. Registration, transfer and renewal at Cloudflare are charged at cost, which makes it the closer fit for a technical team that already uses Cloudflare DNS.

Questions and answers

Is Namecheap cheaper than GoDaddy?

Namecheap is the one that publishes its figures: from November 1, 2026 its regular .com price is $15.98 to register or transfer and $19.98 to renew, before the $0.20 ICANN fee. GoDaddy's help pages we fetched showed no list prices, so the comparison has to be made at each checkout, including renewal rather than the first-year offer.

Do Namecheap and GoDaddy both include domain privacy for free?

Yes, for eligible extensions. Namecheap adds a free Domain Privacy subscription at registration, renewal, transfer and reactivation. GoDaddy includes Domain Privacy with every eligible domain and turns it on by default through Domains By Proxy. Some extensions cannot be hidden at either registrar because of registry rules, so check the extension you want.

Which is easier to transfer away from?

Namecheap is the easier of the two. Its help center says transferring out has no additional fee and the registrar has five days to release the domain. GoDaddy needs the domain unlocked, privacy turned off and protection downgraded to none, plus a one-time code, and transfers typically take 5 to 7 days once started.

Does GoDaddy charge for domain protection?

Domain Privacy is free, but Full and Ultimate Domain Protection are paid tiers; the pages we fetched did not show their prices. Full adds change alerts, transfer blocking and an activity log, and Ultimate adds 90 days to renew after a failed payment. A domain with protection also has auto-renew turned on.

Can I use Namecheap DNS with a domain registered elsewhere?

Yes, through the paid PremiumDNS service. Namecheap describes it as usable with any domain registered at any registrar, once a subscription is attached. Without it, a domain at Namecheap uses the free BasicDNS nameservers by default, or custom nameservers if you enter them.
