Best Veterinary Practice Management Software in 2026

The short answer

  1. #1 Provet Cloud: Cloud PIMS with built-in AI and payments. Best for: Clinics wanting published per-vet pricing.
  2. #2 Shepherd: Cloud PIMS priced per doctor, all staff included. Best for: Small clinics wanting a fixed price ladder.
  3. #3 Vetspire: Cloud PIMS with AI Scribe and summaries. Best for: Hospitals needing whiteboards and sheets.

Visibility in this ranking can be paid for. Payment gives a vendor more visibility, higher up on the review pages; it never adds a vendor, and it never changes a word of the review. The largest vendors in veterinary practice management software cannot hold places 1 to 3. Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order. How it works: placement disclosure · editorial process.

The 11 tools, reviewed

#1 Provet Cloud

Cloud PIMS with built-in AI and payments · Finland · provet.com

Cloud PIMS AI scribe Multi-site

Provet is the only product here that prints both the per-vet fee and the platform fee in two currencies, so a quote is easy to check. Non-vet staff log in free, Provet Pay and a notes agent sit in the same workspace, and the Pro tier adds a referral portal and a triage board for groups.

  • Pricing: Per vet / month. Core is $99 per vet a month plus a $249 platform fee in the US, or £139 per vet and a £139 fee in the UK. Free plan: none.
  • Best for: Clinics wanting published per-vet pricing
  • Strengths: Clinical Agent AI notes; Provet Pay payments; Online booking.

Where it falls short

The platform fee means a one-vet clinic pays more than the per-vet number suggests, and payments are described as unified, so a clinic that wants its own processor should ask first. The referral portal, triage board and customer-success manager sit only on Pro, and Enterprise terms are custom.

Wrong for

A solo vet who needs the lowest all-in monthly figure, since the platform fee sets a floor, or a buyer who wants a self-serve trial before talking to sales.

#2 Shepherd

Cloud PIMS priced per doctor, all staff included · United States · shepherd.vet

Per doctor Unlimited users AI tools

Shepherd's page reads like a rate card, which is rare in this category. Everyone except doctors gets a login at no charge, onboarding and support are included, and for a single clinic billing starts twelve weeks after onboarding begins. Treatments given in the room post to the invoice with discharge instructions attached, and estimates can be approved into a treatment plan before the client leaves.

  • Pricing: Per doctor / month. One doctor costs $349 a month, or $299 with Shepherd Pay; doctors two and three add $99 each and later doctors $49 each. Free plan: none.
  • Best for: Small clinics wanting a fixed price ladder
  • Strengths: SummarizeAI; TranscribeAI; DiagnoseAI.

Where it falls short

The $50 saving depends on using Shepherd Pay, so the headline $299 is not the price for a clinic that keeps its own processor. Relief vets cost an extra $99 a month.

Wrong for

A clinic outside the United States, or one that needs a free trial and a self-serve sandbox before committing to a quote.

#3 Vetspire

Cloud PIMS with AI Scribe and summaries · United States · vetspire.com

Cloud PIMS AI Scribe Specialty

Vetspire builds its medical record around encounters, with several people able to edit at once, and gives emergency hospitals a whiteboard and treatment sheets rather than treating them as a footnote. The scheduler takes appointment templates, so a clinic can block mornings for surgery.

  • Pricing: Quote only. Pricing is not published on the pages we could read; a quote follows a demo. Free plan: none.
  • Best for: Hospitals needing whiteboards and sheets
  • Strengths: AI Scribe; AI Summaries; Medical records by encounter.

Where it falls short

No price is published, the pricing page on the site resolves to the home page, and we could not confirm the company's street address from its own pages.

Wrong for

A clinic that must compare numbers before a call, or a buyer who needs a documented European data location.

Visit Vetspire →

#4 Instinct EMR

Cloud EMR for ER, specialty and general practice · United States · instinct.vet

Cloud EMR ER and specialty AI SOAP notes

Instinct began in 2017 with a founder who was an emergency veterinarian, and the product still reads like it: treatment plans, patient volume and handoffs come first. It has a separate edition for primary care, offers an AI scribe after acquiring ScribbleVet in 2026 and embeds the Plumb's drug reference and Clinician's Brief content.

  • Pricing: Quote only. No price is shown on pages we could read; the site directs buyers to book a demo. Free plan: none.
  • Best for: ER and specialty hospital teams
  • Strengths: Instinct EMR; EMR for Primary Care; Treatment Plan module.

Where it falls short

Pricing is not on the site we could read, and the case studies and satisfaction rankings are the vendor's own. The primary care edition is newer than the emergency product, so a general practice should ask how many clinics use it.

Wrong for

A one-vet clinic that wants a published price and a short self-serve start, or a practice with little interest in reference content.

#5 DaySmart Vet

Cloud PIMS with published entry price · United States · daysmart.com

Cloud PIMS Mobile and equine Entry price

DaySmart Vet tells you the lowest monthly price, that migration from your old system costs nothing and that the team can coordinate an export at no cost if you leave, which are three answers many vendors hold back. It publishes pages for small animal, hospital, mobile, equine, mixed, specialty, emergency and shelter work, so an unusual practice finds its own workflow.

  • Pricing: Per practice / month. Plans start at $123 a month, with other tiers by practice size and add-ons discussed with sales. Free plan: none.
  • Best for: Mobile, equine and independent clinics
  • Strengths: Scheduling and reminders; SOAP notes; Treatment board.

Where it falls short

Only the starting price is public, so the real figure depends on tiers and add-ons that sales explains by phone. The AI voice notes cost extra.

Wrong for

A large group wanting a deep referral and triage workflow, or a buyer seeking a European-hosted system.

#6 Animana

IDEXX cloud PIMS with Dutch and German versions · United States · software.idexx.co.uk

Cloud PIMS IDEXX Europe

Animana comes with the diagnostics owner behind it: the IDEXX Software site calls it a secure, cloud-based practice management system, and it covers scheduling of staff and appointments, client records and messaging, with AI features mentioned. The site is offered in English, Dutch and German, which is more than most products here say about Europe.

  • Pricing: Quote only. No price is shown; the site offers a demo and learn-more links only. Free plan: none.
  • Best for: Continental European IDEXX clinics
  • Strengths: Client management; Staff and resource scheduling; Communications toolbox.

Where it falls short

The site does not say which countries Animana serves, publishes no price and gives no information on data migration. It lives on a UK IDEXX address, but the legal entity behind the sale is not named on the page we read.

Wrong for

A clinic outside the IDEXX diagnostic relationship that wants an independent PIMS, or a buyer who needs a published price list. Provet is the transparent European alternative.

Visit Animana →

#7 ezyVet

IDEXX-backed cloud PIMS, all features included · United States · ezyvet.com

Cloud PIMS IDEXX 100+ integrations

ezyVet states a starting price and says every customer gets all features and every update, which removes the tier maze. Charges post automatically as notes, treatments and diagnostics are completed, and results from IDEXX in-house and reference labs reach the chart directly. The vendor claims more than 7,000 practices as of August 2026 and offers support by phone and email every day.

  • Pricing: Per practice / month. Plans start from $260.50 a month with every feature and update included; other pricing is on request. Free plan: none.
  • Best for: Practices already using IDEXX diagnostics
  • Strengths: Clinical templates; Automatic charge capture; Wellness plans.

Where it falls short

The page does not explain its migration process or name a legal entity, and the lowest price excludes payments, scribing and any promotions that sales may quote. The strongest integration is with IDEXX's own diagnostics, which deepens the bond with one owner.

Wrong for

A clinic that uses a different reference lab and wants no tie to a diagnostics company, or one that needs to see payment and AI costs on paper first. Compare Provet or DaySmart Vet.

Visit ezyVet →

#8 IDEXX Neo

IDEXX cloud PIMS with add-on payments · United States · idexx.com

Cloud PIMS IDEXX Add-on payments

Neo's pitch is simplicity for a clinic leaving a server. The dashboard shows overdue invoices, reminders and draft invoices on one screen, and a consultation starts straight from the scheduler. The page promises easy data conversion, built-in training and a dedicated support team. Payments and the Vello client app are sold as add-on subscriptions, recorded inside Neo.

  • Pricing: Quote only. No price is shown on the page; payments and Vello client engagement are optional subscriptions. Free plan: none.
  • Best for: Small clinics moving off servers
  • Strengths: Practice dashboard; One-click patient history; Scheduler with consult start.

Where it falls short

No price or term is printed, the add-ons mean more than one bill, and the feature copy stays short on depth for inpatient or specialty work.

Wrong for

A hospital needing inpatient treatment sheets and referral workflows, or a clinic wanting a PIMS maker with no diagnostics business attached.

Visit IDEXX Neo →

#9 Covetrus Pulse

Covetrus cloud PIMS built as an app hub · United States · covetrus.com

Cloud PIMS Covetrus App hub

Pulse is described by Covetrus as the center of its platform, with a configurable dashboard that pulls in scheduling, supplies, prescriptions and internal messaging next to apps from the same family. It was previously called eVetPractice. The support site publishes a data conversion guide, a go-live checklist and hardware specifications, which is more preparation material than many vendors show.

  • Pricing: Quote only. No price is published; the site sends buyers to sales and gives support documents for existing users. Free plan: none.
  • Best for: Clinics already buying from Covetrus
  • Strengths: Personalized dashboard; Internal communications; Scheduling.

Where it falls short

The six-hour claim is the vendor's and carries a footnote we did not trace.

Wrong for

A clinic that buys drugs and supplies elsewhere and wants a neutral PIMS, or one needing a published price.

Visit Covetrus Pulse →

#10 Cornerstone

Server-based IDEXX practice management · United States · software.idexx.com

Server-based IDEXX Integrations

IDEXX describes Cornerstone as integrated, server-based veterinary software for practice management, communication and client engagement. Its integrations page names dozens of partners, among them VetConnect PLUS, SmartFlow, Vello, rVetLink, QuickBooks, Vetsource, TeleVet and Trupanion Express, which suits a clinic that has built a stack around it over many years. The same page links to IDEXX's cloud material, so a customer can see a route to a sister product.

  • Pricing: Quote only. No price is shown on its IDEXX product page. Free plan: none.
  • Best for: Established clinics keeping a local server
  • Strengths: Practice management; Client communication; Client engagement.

Where it falls short

A server means hardware, backups and remote-access management on the clinic. Nothing on the page shows price, release cadence or new-clinic onboarding, and IDEXX promotes cloud alternatives next to it. A new buyer takes on a product its owner already positions beside newer ones.

Wrong for

A new clinic or a multi-site group wanting remote access without a server, or a buyer with no IDEXX tie.

Visit Cornerstone →

#11 AVImark

Covetrus practice management product · United States · covetrus.com

Covetrus Legacy Quote only

AVImark appears in Covetrus's own navigation beside Pulse, which is how we confirm it is still sold or supported. The product page we tried returned not found, so we cannot tell you its hosting model, feature list or price from the vendor. We place it last for that reason alone.

  • Pricing: Quote only. No price or product page could be read; contact Covetrus for terms. Free plan: none.
  • Best for: Existing AVImark clinics deciding what is next
  • Strengths: Practice management; Covetrus platform link; Existing customer support.

Where it falls short

We could verify very little: no page described its features, price, hosting or support terms. An unverified product cannot be recommended to a new buyer.

Wrong for

Any new buyer, who should start with a product whose pages can be read and priced, such as Provet, Shepherd or DaySmart Vet.

Visit AVImark →

What this category is

Veterinary practice management software, often called a PIMS, is the system a veterinary clinic uses to schedule appointments, keep patient records, post charges, track drug and supply inventory, send reminders and take payment. Modern products run in the cloud and add online booking, client messaging, lab and imaging integrations and AI note-taking.

How we ranked these

Five tests, applied to every product. The order is not the tests alone: places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them, and the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order.

  • Setup: Moving years of patient history and plugging in the lab.
  • The real price: The doctor count drives the bill, and the add-ons decide the rest.
  • Getting your data out: The chart, the ledger and the vaccine record.
  • Independence from the vendor: The lab, the pharmacy and the payment processor.
  • Who it's for: Solo vet, emergency hospital or a group with a referral flow.

What the data says about this market

Eleven products are ranked here, and the ownership map is the first thing to read. Four of them, ezyVet, Neo, Cornerstone and Animana, are marketed by IDEXX, and two, Pulse and AVImark, by Covetrus, so six of the eleven sit inside two companies that also sell diagnostics or pharmacy supply. The other five come from independent software firms: Provet from Finland and Shepherd, Vetspire, DaySmart Vet and Instinct from the United States. In practice that gives a buyer a real choice between a PIMS that comes with an ecosystem and one that has to be wired to everything.

How to choose

  1. Count doctors, relief vets and technicians, then price a month. Write down the number of full-time veterinarians, the relief vets who work a few days, and the technicians and front-desk staff who need a login.
  2. Run one real week of cases through a demo or a sandbox. A demo that follows the vendor's script tells you little.
  3. Get the exit terms and the conversion plan in writing. Before signing, request the contract term, the notice period, the data-export wording and the fee, if any, for an extract.

Questions and answers

What is the best veterinary practice management software in 2026?

Provet Cloud ranks first of 11, best for clinics wanting published per-vet pricing. Shepherd is second (small clinics wanting a fixed price ladder) and Vetspire third (hospitals needing whiteboards and sheets). Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands, wherever the category has them.

How much does veterinary software cost per month?

Published entry prices on vendor pages run from $123 a month at DaySmart Vet and $260.50 at ezyVet to $299 for one doctor on Shepherd with its payment product, and a Provet Core platform fee of $249 plus $99 per vet in the United States.

Is cloud veterinary software better than a server-based system?

For most clinics, yes, because the practice stops paying for a server, a backup routine and workstation upgrades, and staff can open records from a phone at an emergency or a farm call.

How long does it take to switch veterinary software?

Plan on several weeks, not days. The data conversion is done by the vendor, then you test the converted records, retrain staff and pick a cutover date with a light schedule.

Can I get my records out if I leave a vet software vendor?

You should be able to, but no standard format exists, so the answer depends on the contract. DaySmart Vet says its team can coordinate an export at no cost on cancellation. Provet advertises an open API.

Do these products include an AI scribe?

Most now offer one, though the price differs. Provet has a Clinical Agent for notes, treatment items and charges, and Shepherd has SummarizeAI, TranscribeAI and DiagnoseAI.

Which veterinary software works best for a mobile or equine practice?

DaySmart Vet publishes dedicated pages for mobile, house-call and equine practices and says clinicians can work from the field with the schedule and records together.

Are there veterinary systems built for Europe?

Provet is developed by Nordhealth in Helsinki and publishes UK pricing in pounds next to US pricing. Animana is marketed by IDEXX with English, Dutch and German site versions. ezyVet links a separate European site.

What happens if my vendor is also my lab or pharmacy supplier?

You will probably be offered a bundle, and the PIMS may integrate more deeply with the owner's own lab or pharmacy than with others. IDEXX owns four products on this list and Covetrus two.

How do per-vet prices work when I use relief veterinarians?

It depends on the vendor. Shepherd prints a relief vet package at $99 a month for unlimited relief vets and lets you turn it on or off monthly.

Should a new clinic buy a server product?

Almost never. A new clinic has no legacy data to protect and nothing to gain from a server, so a cloud product with published pricing is the lower-risk start.
