Google Meet is the meeting tool that comes with Google Workspace and runs in a browser tab, with little to administer. Zoom is a standalone platform with a mature webinar, events and rooms business sold largely through add-ons. Workspace companies holding ordinary meetings stay on Meet; companies that live on external calls, large events or conference rooms pay for Zoom.

Which one to choose
Choose Google Meet if
you already pay for Google Workspace, most meetings are everyday internal and client calls, and you want guests to join from a browser with nothing to install.

Where they differ
Getting a guest into the call
Meet runs entirely in the browser, so a guest clicks a link and joins with nothing to install. Zoom is the product most outsiders expect on an invitation, but its desktop app is heavy and steers guests toward installing it. For a first-time guest on a locked-down laptop, Meet has fewer steps.

Webinars and large meetings
Zoom's webinar and events products are mature and its large meetings are dependable, with capacity sold as add-ons. Meet's features for large events, webinars and complex meetings are thinner, and bigger meeting sizes require higher Workspace tiers. A company with a regular webinar program will run into Meet's limits well before Zoom's.

What the license really costs
Meet is included in Workspace plans, so for those customers the extra cost is zero, though recording and some features need higher tiers. Zoom charges per user on published tiers, then adds webinars, rooms, phone, cloud storage and larger meetings. Free use is capped at 60 minutes for Meet group calls and 40 for Zoom meetings. Which is cheaper depends on what you already own.

Conference rooms and difficult networks
Zoom Rooms is a mature product and Zoom's call quality under poor network conditions is a known strength. Meet has its own hardware line, but room hardware options are fewer than Zoom's. For offices fitting out several meeting rooms, or teams calling into regions with weak connectivity, Zoom is the stronger choice.

When neither fits
If the company runs on Microsoft 365, neither is the obvious answer: Microsoft Teams is tied into the chat, files and phone staff already use. If meetings must run on your own servers, Jitsi Meet is free, open source and self-hostable.

For a Google Workspace company whose meetings are daily internal and client calls, usually yes, and it removes a second license. It is a weaker replacement if you run regular large webinars or need many conference rooms, where Zoom's products are more developed.
