Mixpanel vs Amplitude
Both are event-based product analytics tools with a free plan and a usage-priced tier starting at $0. Mixpanel lets a growth marketer build funnels and retention reports unaided and includes experiments on its self-serve plans. Amplitude offers a larger free allowance and deeper experimentation on its quoted tiers. Smaller teams pick Mixpanel; product organizations with a data function pick Amplitude.

Where they differ
The meter and the free allowance
Both now meter by events and both publish a second tier that starts at $0. Mixpanel's free plan covers 1 million events a month, and Growth bills usage beyond that up to 20 million. Amplitude's free plan covers 2 million events a month, and Plus scales to 70 million before a sales conversation. On allowance and self-serve headroom, Amplitude gives more.
Edge: Amplitude
Experimentation
Mixpanel includes experiments on Free and Growth, capped at 1,000 and 5,000 monthly experiment users, with sequential testing and CUPED. Amplitude allows one active experiment on Free and Plus but lists feature experiment results and A/B/n testing as not included there; they arrive on Growth, with holdouts, mutual exclusion and multi-armed bandits as add-ons. Small teams get further on Mixpanel, formal programs on Amplitude.
Edge: even
Getting a first useful report
Mixpanel's draw is that a funnel or retention curve can be built without a query, and its reports read cleanly enough to drop into a leadership deck. Amplitude's interface has a steeper learning curve, and the site's review of it says full value usually needs a dedicated data or growth function. For a small team's first months, Mixpanel gets there sooner.
Edge: Mixpanel
Governance and the warehouse
Mixpanel keeps SAML single sign-on and SCIM for Enterprise and gives warehouse connectors for Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks, Redshift and Postgres to organizations on a paid event plan. Amplitude puts single sign-on and project permissions on Growth, with role-based access and data access controls on Enterprise; its warehouse-native mode is a legacy feature closed to new customers. Controlled access means a quoted plan with either.
Edge: even
Tally: Mixpanel 1, Amplitude 1, even 2.
When neither fits
Neither helps a marketing site or blog with no logged-in product, where the question is which channel brought the visitors. Plausible Analytics gives a simple privacy-first dashboard for that, and Google Analytics is the free default with deep integrations.

Questions and answers
Is Mixpanel cheaper than Amplitude?
At the bottom, both cost nothing: Mixpanel is free up to 1 million events a month and Amplitude up to 2 million. Above that, Mixpanel Growth and Amplitude Plus both start at $0 and charge by event volume, each with a calculator on its pricing page, so the answer depends on your volume.
Do Mixpanel and Amplitude both have a free plan?
Yes. Mixpanel's free plan covers up to 1 million events a month with 10,000 session replays and five saved reports per seat. Amplitude's free plan covers 2 million events a month with 10,000 session replays, but leaves out custom events and behavioral cohorts. Both allow unlimited seats.
When does Amplitude make more sense than Mixpanel?
When the organization is ready for it. Amplitude is aimed at product teams running structured experiments, and its Growth plan adds experiment results, single sign-on and advanced behavioral analysis on quoted pricing. A small team without a data role will use little of that and will find Mixpanel simpler for the same core job.
Do Mixpanel and Amplitude have startup programs?
Both do. Mixpanel gives companies founded less than five years ago with up to $8 million in total funding their first year free on its Startup Plan. Amplitude gives startups with under $10 million in funding and fewer than 20 employees one free year on its Growth plan.
