Notion is a flexible workspace that becomes a wiki when you give pages owners and verification dates. Confluence is a structured wiki of spaces and page trees wired to Jira. Startups already working in Notion keep their knowledge there; engineering-led companies past a hundred people and already paying Atlassian keep theirs in Confluence. Neither is a real public help center.

Writing and arranging pages

Notion's editor is among the best available, with nested pages, teamspaces, templates and wiki databases that link policies, onboarding checklists and project documents together. Confluence organizes content in spaces and page trees with page templates, whiteboards and databases. For writing comfort and freedom to shape pages, Notion is ahead; the price of that freedom shows up later.

Confluence's Jira macro shows a single work item, a live list from a JQL query or a count, and can create a Jira item without leaving the editor. Notion can preview pasted Jira links and sync Jira projects into a database, but the sync runs one way, from Jira to Notion, and needs the Business or Enterprise plan. For a Jira shop, Confluence is the natural home.

Knowing whether a page is still true

Notion has verified pages and wiki databases with owners: a badge marks a page as up to date and shows in search results and AI citations, although this sits on the Business tier and above. Confluence's plan pages describe page insights and analytics instead, which show views but not whether content was reviewed, and teams usually add a marketplace app for verification or expiry. Notion has the better answer.

Holding up as content piles up

Both degrade. Notion drifts into chaos without someone acting as information architect, and its search worsens as page count grows. Confluence instances sprawl, and search mixes current pages with abandoned drafts. Confluence's spaces, page trees and granular permissions are better suited to large structured bodies of content, but neither stays tidy without strict ownership.

When neither fits

If the goal is a branded public help center for customers, neither fits: Notion's public sites have no search analytics or ticket deflection, and Confluence is awkward for the job. It depends on where the work already happens. Teams doing daily work in Notion get a wiki with owners and verified pages in the same place. Companies on Jira get documentation linked to tickets in Confluence. Either one needs strict ownership to avoid clutter.

How do Notion and Confluence charge for readers?

Both charge per person. Confluence is free for up to 10 users, then lists Standard at $5.42 and Premium at $10.44 per user per month. Notion lists Plus at €9.50 and Business at €19.50 per member per month, billed yearly. Notion guests are free but see only pages they are invited to; Confluence Standard includes free guest access.

Can I move content out of Notion or Confluence later?

Yes, both export. Notion exports pages as PDF, HTML or Markdown with CSV for databases, and a whole workspace as HTML, Markdown and CSV, though nested databases and relations lose their meaning. Confluence exports a page to Word or PDF, and a space admin can export a whole space as PDF, CSV, HTML or XML.

Does Notion work with Jira?

To a degree. Notion shows previews of pasted Jira links and, on Business and Enterprise plans, syncs Jira projects into a Notion database. That sync is one-directional, so edits must be made in Jira. Confluence can list work items by JQL query and create new ones from inside a page.
