Vimeo vs YouTube
YouTube hosts video for free and pays for it with advertising, in exchange for the largest built-in audience. Vimeo charges a subscription and gives an ad-free player with password protection and control over where a video can be embedded. A business seeking discovery by strangers uses YouTube; one that needs to control how its video looks uses Vimeo.

Which one to choose
Choose Vimeo if
the video sits on your own site or behind access controls, third-party ads and suggested videos next to it are unacceptable, and a subscription is fine.

Choose YouTube if
the content is public, the goal is discovery by people who have never heard of you, and ads beside your video are a fair price for free hosting.

Where they differ
What you get without paying
YouTube lets a verified account upload files of up to 256 GB or 12 hours each, and unverified accounts are held to 15 minutes per video. Vimeo's free plan stops at 1 GB of storage and has no analytics; its paid plans run from 2 TB on Starter through 4 TB on Standard to 7 TB on Advanced. For volume at no cost, YouTube is far ahead.
Edge: YouTube
Control over what viewers see
Vimeo's paid plans carry no third-party ads and add player customization, password protection and limits on which domains may embed a video. YouTube states it may place ads even on channels outside its Partner Program, and its embedded player cannot switch off related videos; the most you can do is restrict them to your own channel. For a branded or restricted deployment, Vimeo qualifies.
Edge: Vimeo
Being discovered
YouTube's defining asset is a massive built-in audience, and public videos there can surface in its search results and related video lists. No paid plan in this category buys reach on that scale. Vimeo's Starter plan adds search optimization for public videos, but it is a hosted, brandable player for an audience you bring yourself. If new viewers are the point, YouTube is the answer.
Edge: YouTube
Live streaming and events
YouTube includes live streaming at no charge once a channel is verified and has had no live streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Vimeo keeps live events for its Advanced plan, which adds webinar registration for up to 100 attendees, audience chat, polls and Q&A, and simulcasting. A public broadcast costs nothing on YouTube; a registered, branded webinar is what Vimeo's tier is for.
Edge: even
Tally: Vimeo 1, YouTube 2, even 1.
When neither fits
Neither works for a developer team building video into its own product, since Vimeo is built around its hosted page and player and YouTube around public reach. api.video and Mux are API-first platforms with usage-based billing made for that job.

Questions and answers
Is Vimeo worth paying for when YouTube is free?
It is if control matters. The subscription buys an ad-free player you can customize, password protection and domain-level embed restrictions, none of which YouTube is built to provide. If the video is public marketing meant to reach strangers, the free option is often the right one.
Will Vimeo or YouTube show ads on my videos?
Vimeo's player has no third-party advertising. YouTube is ad-supported and says it may place ads on videos from channels that are not in its Partner Program, so ads can run without you earning from them. Related videos also appear in its embedded player and cannot be turned off.
Can I keep a video private on Vimeo and YouTube?
Both offer it, in different depth. YouTube has public, unlisted and private settings, and a private video is shared by entering the viewers' email addresses. Vimeo's paid plans add password protection, unlisted links and restrictions on which websites may embed the video.
How much video can I store on Vimeo compared with YouTube?
Vimeo caps total storage by plan: 1 GB on Free, 2 TB on Starter, 4 TB on Standard and 7 TB on Advanced. YouTube publishes a limit per upload instead, 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less, for verified accounts.
