Google Maps Platform alternatives: 11 compared

Developers look past Google Maps Platform when per-call billing becomes hard to forecast, when the terms stop them storing results, or when they want to pair data with a map from another source. They go to Mapbox for per-unit transparency, to MapTiler or Stadia Maps for flat plans, and to TomTom or HERE for routing-led work.

Short answer: The closest replacements for Google Maps Platform in our maps API providers ranking are Mapbox, MapTiler and TomTom Maps APIs. Choose Mapbox if you want per-unit prices for maps, search and navigation with a documented route to stored geocodes. All 11 alternatives below are ranked products from Best Maps API Providers in 2026, and each says where it differs from Google Maps Platform and when Google Maps Platform is still the better choice.

Visibility in our rankings can be paid for. Payment moves a vendor's position within the shortlist; it never adds a vendor, and it never changes a word of the review or of this page. The first three alternatives go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow in their ranked order. Why buyers look past Google Maps Platform

  1. Billing runs per SKU, with a free cap on each

Google prices each API call as a separate SKU, and since March 2025 a free usage cap per SKU has replaced the old $200 monthly credit. The FAQ lists 10,000 free events for most Essentials SKUs and 5,000 for Pro SKUs. A project that mixes SKUs has to meter each one.

  2. Terms limit caching and non-Google maps

The Maps Platform terms say customers will not cache Google Maps Content except where the service terms allow it. The Directions API terms say its results must not be used with a non-Google map. Place IDs are exempt, so they can be kept indefinitely.

  3. Subscriptions cap calls, overage is pay as you go

The three subscription plans bundle a combined number of calls: 50,000, 100,000 or 250,000 a month. Usage above the limit, or of a SKU the plan does not include, is charged at standard pay-as-you-go prices. A plan fixes the bill only while traffic stays inside it.

What each alternative does differently

1. Mapbox

Maps, search and navigation SDKs billed per use · United States

The nearest like-for-like rival for web and mobile maps. The pricing page lists a free tier for most products and automatic volume discounts. Geocoding is split into temporary and permanent APIs, so storing results is a separate paid product. Self-hosting is sold as Atlas, outside the pay-as-you-go plan.

Switch from Google Maps Platform if you want per-unit prices for maps, search and navigation with a documented route to stored geocodes.

Pricing: Pay as you go with free monthly tiers: web map loads are free to 50,000 then $5.00 per 1,000, and directions requests are free to 100,000 then $2.00 per 1,000. (free plan)

2. MapTiler

Hosted maps and self-hosted map servers from Switzerland · Switzerland

Built around vector and raster tiles served as a hosted service. The Free plan is for testing and non-commercial use and shows a MapTiler logo. Flex is a monthly subscription, and an on-premises route (a map server you run yourself) is listed under its product menu. Place data is thinner than Google's.

Switch from Google Maps Platform if you mainly need map tiles on a flat monthly plan, with the option to host the server yourself.

Pricing: A free plan with a logo on the map and no commercial use, a Flex plan at $30 per month with extra traffic billed monthly, and custom prepaid contracts with volume discounts. (free plan)

3. TomTom Maps APIs

Maps, traffic, routing and search APIs from a map owner · Netherlands

Sold as separate APIs, each with its own free monthly allowance and no card needed to start. Routing, traffic flow and incident data are the strong parts, with a Matrix Routing API for travel times. The pricing page also lists automotive-only products that need a sales contact.

Switch from Google Maps Platform if your product is routing or traffic led and you want a free allowance on each API.

Pricing: Free monthly requests per API without a card (for example 200,000 raster tile requests, 20,000 routing requests and 2,500 Snap to Roads requests), then usage-based pricing; enterprise terms are custom. (free plan)

4. HERE Technologies

Location platform for logistics, mobility and automotive · Netherlands

A location platform used for logistics, mobility and in-vehicle work. Sign-up is free and the vendor describes usage-based pricing with volume discounts, but the rate table did not load in the page text we fetched. Expect a sales conversation for fleet features. It is less aimed at a small store locator.

Switch from Google Maps Platform if you run logistics or fleet software and want a platform built around vehicles.

Pricing: Free sign-up and usage-based pricing with volume discounts; the rate table did not load in the page text we fetched, so confirm prices in the portal. (free plan)

5. Stadia Maps

Privacy-first maps, geocoding and routing on credits · United States

Credits are pooled across maps, geocoding and routing. The Free plan forbids commercial use, while paid plans allow it and add 3, 2 or 1.5 cents per 1,000 extra credits. A cacheable static maps endpoint gives caching rights while a paid plan lasts. Satellite imagery starts on the Standard plan.

Switch from Google Maps Platform if you want one credit pool across APIs and explicit rights to cache static maps.

Pricing: A free plan with 200,000 credits per month and no commercial use, Starter at $20 per month, and Professional at $250 per month with 25,000,000 credits; extra credits cost 3 cents per 1,000 on Starter and 1.5 cents on Professional. (free plan)

Full review: #5 of 12 in our ranking · Visit Stadia Maps →

6. Geoapify

OpenStreetMap-based maps, geocoding and routing APIs · Cyprus

A smaller vendor with OpenStreetMap-based APIs and a daily credit allowance rather than a monthly one. The pricing FAQ says the Free plan may run in production for commercial sites if attribution is shown. Custom plans can use dedicated servers, quoted at 700 euros a month plus a 200 euro setup fee.

Switch from Google Maps Platform if you want a free commercial tier on OpenStreetMap data and can show attribution.

Pricing: A free plan with 3,000 credits per day and no card, then daily-credit plans at $59, $109, $179 and $299 per month billed monthly. (free plan)

Full review: #7 of 12 in our ranking · Visit Geoapify →

7. Esri ArcGIS Location Platform

Esri's location services for developers · United States

Aimed at teams that already work with GIS data. The overview offers a free tier for all services and pay as you go afterwards, and says you can host your own data as feature services and keep ownership. The product spans geocoding, routing, places, elevation and demographic enrichment, beyond a plain map.

Switch from Google Maps Platform if you need spatial analysis, data enrichment or hosted feature layers, not only a base map.

Pricing: Free tier for all services, then pay as you go for what you consume; the rate table did not render in the pages we fetched. (free plan)

Full review: #8 of 12 in our ranking · Visit Esri ArcGIS Location Platform →

8. Azure Maps

Microsoft's maps, routing and weather service inside Azure · United States

Part of the Azure account model. The docs describe one Gen2 pricing tier, usage-based with volume discounts, and the older Gen1 tier retired on September 15, 2026 with accounts converted automatically. Billing sits on the Azure invoice, and keys use Entra ID or SAS tokens. Rate figures render only in the browser.

Switch from Google Maps Platform if your stack and billing already sit in Azure and you want one invoice.

Pricing: Usage-based Gen2 pricing with volume discounts, no upfront cost or termination fees; the rate table loads only in the browser, so we do not quote figures. (free trial)

9. Amazon Location Service

Maps, places, routes, trackers and geofences on AWS · United States

A set of AWS services for maps, places, routes, trackers and geofences. Place requests carry an IntendedUse setting, and choosing Storage moves the request to a higher price tier, so caching is priced rather than banned. The developer guide says queries are anonymized before reaching data providers.

Switch from Google Maps Platform if you run on AWS and want to store place results at a declared, higher price.

Pricing: Pay per request with no upfront cost; new AWS customers get up to $200 in Free Tier credits, volume discounts apply above $5,000 monthly usage, and the rate tables render in the browser only. (free trial)

10. MapQuest Developer

Geocoding, directions and static maps on fixed monthly tiers · United States

Priced by transaction rather than by SKU. Pay as you go is $0.0045 per transaction after a one-time free allowance, and every plan includes all APIs and SDKs. The pricing page says storing or caching geocodes is not allowed on monthly plans and needs an Enterprise account.

Switch from Google Maps Platform if you want a flat price per transaction across all APIs and do not need to store geocodes.

Pricing: Pay as you go at $0.0045 per transaction after 50,000 one-time free transactions, or monthly tiers at $119, $249, $499 and $949 for 30,000 to 500,000 transactions. (free trial)

Full review: #11 of 12 in our ranking · Visit MapQuest Developer →

11. Radar

Geofencing, tracking and maps APIs priced by usage · United States

Closer to location infrastructure than to a map library. Core Maps cover geocoding, autocomplete, static maps and routing, and the larger products track users and trigger geofences. All plans are annual commitments and the FAQ says there is no free tier, so it fits funded products, not prototypes.

Switch from Google Maps Platform if you also need geofencing or tracking and accept an annual commitment with no free tier.

Pricing: Annual commitments with usage billed at published starting rates: Core Maps from $0.50 per 1,000 API calls, Premium Maps from $2.00, and tracking products from $0.04 per monthly tracked user. (none)

When Google Maps Platform is still the right choice

Google Maps Platform remains the right choice when users expect its place data, Street View and the look of the map they already know. It suits projects that stay inside the free caps or a subscription, that do not need to store results, and that want one vendor for maps, places, routes and address validation. If those hold, moving buys little.

What to expect when you switch from Google Maps Platform

  1. Plan for the data you cannot take with you

The terms bar caching of Google Maps Content outside the service-specific exceptions, and place IDs can be stored indefinitely. A switch therefore means re-geocoding from your own address data with the new vendor. Check that vendor's storage rules first, since Mapbox, AWS and MapQuest each treat stored results differently.

  2. Re-check every call in the new meter

Each vendor counts a billable unit differently: a map load, a request, a transaction, a credit or a tracked user. Take a month of Google usage by SKU and price it in the new unit before you commit. Volume discounts and annual commitments change the answer.

  3. Swap the map library and the attribution together

Google's Places and Directions results are tied to a Google map, so a new data source and a new renderer move as a pair. Mapbox, MapTiler, Stadia Maps and Geoapify serve tiles you can use in other libraries, and each has its own logo or attribution rule on lower plans.

Questions and answers

Can I store Google Maps data in my own database?

Only in part. The terms say customers will not cache Google Maps Content except as the service-specific terms permit. Place IDs can be stored indefinitely, and some latitude and longitude values can be cached for 30 consecutive calendar days before deletion.

Did the $200 monthly credit go away?

Yes. The billing overview says free usage caps replaced the monthly $200 credit on March 1, 2025. Each SKU now has its own monthly free events, such as 10,000 for most Essentials SKUs and 5,000 for Pro SKUs. New customers may also get a $300 trial credit.

Can I cancel a Google Maps subscription at any time?

Yes, if you have not exhausted it. The subscriptions page says there are no cancellation penalties and your bill includes one final prorated charge. Usage after cancelling is billed at standard pay-as-you-go prices.

Can I use Google Directions results on a non-Google map?

No. The Maps Platform service terms say Directions API content must not be used in conjunction with a non-Google map. The same restriction appears for the Distance Matrix API, so a move to another map library means moving routing too.

What happens to my bill if I exceed a subscription plan?

The overage is billed at pay-as-you-go prices. The subscriptions page says usage above the plan limit, or of SKUs the plan does not cover, is charged at standard rates. The Maps Subscription Management page shows consumption against the limit.

Is Google Maps Platform different for customers in the EEA?

Yes, in places. The pricing page says availability, functionality and terms may differ for customers with a billing address in the European Economic Area. Read the EEA page before you plan a migration for a European entity.
