Companies look past Chargebee when a fee that scales with invoiced volume starts to outweigh the software, when add-ons are priced separately, or when a 90-day notice period locks in a renewal. Most move to Maxio or Stripe Billing for a like-for-like swap, to Zoho Billing or ChargeOver for flat fees, and to Paddle or FastSpring when they want a merchant of record.
Visibility in our rankings can be paid for. Payment moves a vendor's position within
the shortlist; it never adds a vendor, and it never changes a word of the review or of this page. How it works:

What each alternative does differently
1. Maxio
B2B SaaS billing with revenue recognition and metrics · United States
Plans are set by monthly billings band instead of a percentage: a Grow tier up to $100K a month, a quoted Scale tier above. Usage-based billing, subscription management, dunning and 20-plus gateways are in every plan. Quoting, revenue recognition and metrics sit in the same platform.
Switch from Chargebee if you want a fixed monthly fee instead of a percentage of invoices.
Pricing: Grow plan at $599 a month for up to $100,000 in monthly billings on an annual agreement, with unlimited users; the Scale plan above that is quoted. (none)

2. Stripe Billing
Stripe's recurring billing layer on top of Stripe Payments · United States
Charges 0.7% of Billing volume on pay-as-you-go, counted on and off Stripe and excluding one-off invoices, with annual tiers beyond that. Billing sits next to Stripe's payments, tax and revenue recognition products, so it suits teams already processing cards there. Not a multi-gateway tool.
Switch from Chargebee if you already process payments on Stripe and want billing in the same account.
Pricing: Pay-as-you-go at 0.7% of billing volume with no monthly fee, plus Stripe payment processing fees; annual contracts available at volume. (none)

3. Recurly
Subscription management focused on consumer and media businesses · United States
A subscription platform with separate product lines for subscriptions, revenue recognition, Shopify commerce, in-product engagement and a standalone failed-payment recovery engine. Its pricing page was behind a bot check when we looked, so quote it directly. Documentation is public and organized per product.
Switch from Chargebee if failed-payment recovery is your main reason to leave.
Pricing: Starter at $249 a month plus 0.9% of billing volume, with the first $40,000 of monthly billings included; All-Access is billed annually at under 1% of volume with a $1 million minimum. (free trial)

4. Zuora
Enterprise subscription billing, revenue and quoting suite · United States
Aimed at enterprises: its own pages cite 1000-plus enterprise customers and one-time, recurring and usage-based charges across channels. Publishes no price. Headquartered in Silicon Valley by its own account. Heavier to implement than Chargebee, and a poor fit for a team of ten.
Switch from Chargebee if your contracts and entities have outgrown a mid-market tool.
Pricing: Annual subscription on a custom quote at enterprise levels, typically with a partner-led implementation. (none)

5. Paddle
Merchant of record for software and digital products · United Kingdom
A merchant of record: Paddle sells to your customers, so tax compliance, fraud protection, chargebacks and buyer support move to it. Pay-as-you-go has no monthly fee. Chargebee leaves you as the seller, so this removes tax filing work but also gives up control of the checkout relationship.
Switch from Chargebee if you sell software globally and want someone else to handle sales tax and VAT.
Pricing: Published at 5% plus 50 cents per checkout transaction with no monthly fee, covering payments, tax and billing; products under $10 and invoiced sales need custom pricing. (none)

6. Zoho Billing
Affordable recurring billing inside the Zoho suite · India
Flat monthly plans per organization, not a share of volume. Standard stops at three users and one-time invoicing; Premium adds subscription billing, usage-based models, hosted payment pages, proration and dunning for up to ten users. Strongest when the books already run on other Zoho products.
Switch from Chargebee if your team is small and you want a predictable subscription of your own.
Pricing: Published plans from $39 a month billed annually for Standard (quotes and invoices) and $79 for Premium, which adds subscription billing, usage pricing, hosted payment pages and dunning; Enterprise is quoted; 14-day free trial. (free trial)

8. Orb
Usage-based billing engine for AI and infrastructure products · United States
Built around metered usage: credit pools, prepaid credits, seats, hybrid pricing and pricing simulations, plus invoicing, collections and a NetSuite revenue recognition path. Its pricing page lists no figures. Chargebee suits plan-and-seat catalogs better; Orb is for products billed on consumption.
Switch from Chargebee if most of your revenue is metered consumption or credits.
Pricing: Annual contract on a quote, scaled by billing volume and event throughput. (none)

9. Recharge
Subscription app for Shopify ecommerce brands · United States
Made for subscription stores on Shopify, with a product-page widget, a customer portal, churn-prevention flows and failed-payment retries. Processing fees are listed alongside the monthly plan. Not meant for B2B contracts, quotes or invoice-based SaaS billing, which is Chargebee's main territory.
Switch from Chargebee if you run a Shopify subscription store, not a B2B software business.
Pricing: Published monthly plans starting at $99 per month for the Starter tier, plus transaction fees; custom pricing for high volume. (free trial)
