Sellers look past Avalara when a price per state per month grows with every new state, when a $50M revenue line pushes them onto a custom quote, or when they want a tool built around one job. Most go to Numeral, Anrok or Kintsugi for filing-first pricing, or to Stripe Tax and TaxJar if the payment stack is already settled.
Visibility in our rankings can be paid for. Payment moves a vendor's position within

Questions and answers
How does Avalara charge for sales tax?
Per state, per month or per year. The published Core Compliance plan is $79 per state per month or $799 per state per year, and a version with Streamlined Sales Tax services is $69 or $699. Businesses with $50M or more in revenue are on Custom pricing.
Does Avalara have a free option for sales tax?
Only through the SST program. The pricing page says 25 states cover the cost of calculation, returns, remittance and audit protection for qualified sellers. Outside that, plans are paid, though a developer page advertises a 90 day free trial of AvaTax.
Which platforms does Avalara connect to?
The pricing page lists Shopify, Microsoft NetSuite, SAP, QuickBooks, Sage, Adobe Commerce, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, Salesforce, Oracle, Stripe and Zuora, and says there are more than 1,400 signed partner integrations. A replacement vendor needs a connector for each of your own systems.
Can I test a replacement before cancelling Avalara?
Yes, with several vendors. Numeral and Kintsugi have free monitoring tiers, Zamp offers a free 30 day API sandbox, and TaxJar and Quaderno offer trials. Run the new tool in parallel for one filing period and compare the rates it returns.
Do per-filing tools cost less than per-state pricing?
It depends on how many returns you file. Numeral and Kintsugi charge from $75 a filing, Avalara $799 per state per year. A state with quarterly returns costs about $300 a year per filing, a state filed monthly about $900, so filing frequency decides.
What changes if I sell through a merchant of record?
You stop being the seller for tax purposes. Paddle states it acts as merchant of record with global tax compliance included at 5% plus 50 cents per checkout. That removes registrations from your side but replaces them with a share of revenue and a platform dependency.
