Time tracking software · head to head

Toggl (formerly Toggl Track) vs Clockify

Toggl is built around a fast timer people keep using, with clear reports and rates, at a mid-range per-user price. Clockify covers a wider feature list (kiosk, invoicing, scheduling, GPS) at a lower per-seat price and a free plan for up to five users. Agencies and teams that value a clean tracker favor Toggl; cost-sensitive teams that want more modules favor Clockify.

Where they differ

Price per seat

Clockify lists Basic at $3.99, Standard at $5.49, Pro at $7.99 and Enterprise at $11.99 per seat per month billed annually. Toggl lists Starter at $9 and Premium at $16 per user per month billed annually ($12 and $24 monthly). Even Clockify's Standard tier, which holds approvals and invoicing, costs less than Toggl's Starter. On list price alone, Clockify is the clear winner.

Edge: Clockify

Feature breadth

Clockify's pricing page puts kiosk on Basic, invoicing, approvals and time off on Standard, and scheduling, GPS tracking, expenses and activity monitoring on Pro. Toggl's page lists billable rates, approvals and timeline views on Starter, with labor costs, profitability reports and SSO on Premium. Toggl does not list kiosk or GPS on the page we fetched, so Clockify covers more ground, notably for field and shift staff.

Edge: Clockify

Daily use and adoption

Our category notes say people keep logging time in Toggl because a timer starts in one click from the desktop app, the phone or a browser extension inside other tools. Clockify has the same extension idea, but our notes describe its interface as busy, with features spread across tiers. A team that must get every person to log hours consistently will get a better result with Toggl.

Edge: Toggl (formerly Toggl Track)

Free plan and trial

Clockify's page says the free plan covers up to 5 users with timer, timesheet, calendar and reports, and offers a 7-day trial of paid plans. Toggl lists a free tier for a small number of users without a stated cap on the page we fetched (our category notes say three) and a 30-day trial with no credit card. Clockify's free plan is larger; Toggl's trial is longer. We call it even.

Edge: even

Where the real bill ends up

Toggl sells Time Off Pro at $2 and Capacity Management at $5 per user per month as add-ons, and project templates need Premium. Clockify's Pro tier at $7.99 holds scheduling, forecasting and budgets, and its Enterprise tier adds SSO and SCIM at $11.99. Even with Toggl's add-ons, a team of 20 on Premium costs well above the same team on Clockify Pro, although we did not price an identical feature set.

Edge: Clockify

Tally: Toggl (formerly Toggl Track) 1, Clockify 3, even 1.

When neither fits

Neither is the answer for an engineering team that wants hours recorded against tickets without anyone starting a timer, or for a firm that needs invoicing with retainers and trust accounting. Harvest handles client invoicing more fully, and Tempo Timesheets sits inside Jira.

Questions and answers

Is Clockify really free?

Clockify's page lists a free plan for up to 5 users with unlimited tracking, timesheets, calendar and reports. Kiosk starts on the Basic paid tier at $3.99 per seat per month billed annually, and invoicing and approvals on Standard at $5.49.

How much does Toggl cost per user?

On the page we fetched, Starter is $9 per user per month billed annually or $12 monthly, and Premium is $16 annually or $24 monthly. Enterprise is quoted. Time Off Pro costs $2 and Capacity Management $5 per user per month as add-ons.

Which has timesheet approvals?

Both. Toggl lists approvals on Starter and above, and Clockify lists them on Standard and above. Neither includes approvals on its free plan according to the pages we fetched.

Can either track GPS location or screenshots?

Clockify's Pro tier lists GPS tracking and activity monitoring. Toggl's pricing page did not list either, so check with the vendor if field tracking matters. Monitoring staff has legal and trust implications that vary by country, which we did not review.
