Duolingo vs Babbel

Duolingo is the better start for a casual learner who wants a free, game-style daily habit; Babbel is the better fit for an adult who wants a fixed, guided course toward everyday conversation and does not mind paying from the first month. Neither published a readable price on the pages we fetched, so the real cost is a check inside each app before you commit.

Where they differ

What you get before paying

Duolingo's own site calls itself free, fun and science-based, and its blog describes ads and limited energy for free learners. Babbel lets you try the first lesson of every course for free and says signing up is free, and its home page mentions up to 80 free lessons depending on the language. Duolingo gives you a free path to keep going, while Babbel gives you a sample. For zero spend, Duolingo wins.

Edge: Duolingo

Course design

Babbel describes itself as a personal coach steering learners toward everyday conversation, with about 60,000 lessons across 14 languages at Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced levels. Duolingo's pages we could read describe game-style lessons and streak tracking and do not publish a lesson count or a language total. A learner who wants a visible curriculum with named levels gets a clearer picture of the road ahead from Babbel.

Edge: Babbel

AI speaking practice

Duolingo Max, announced in March 2023, sits above Super and adds Video Call and Roleplay built on GPT-4; Roleplay gives feedback on accuracy and complexity. Babbel Speak is its AI feature that walks learners through realistic conversation situations one stage at a time. Both treat AI as practice, not a human tutor. Duolingo documents its feature in more detail on pages we could read, so it takes this round narrowly.

Edge: Duolingo

Pricing transparency

Neither vendor gave a readable price in our fetch. Babbel's price page returned only a notice that JavaScript is required, and its home page promoted a code for 20% off Lifetime without a figure. Duolingo's paid tiers are named, Super and Max, but its blog post and research page state no price. Both leave the number to the sign-up flow, so a buyer cannot compare costs from the open web.

Edge: even

Language range

Babbel lists fourteen languages on its home page: Spanish in two varieties, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Danish, Dutch, Indonesian, Norwegian, Polish, Swedish and Turkish. Duolingo says Max is available in 188 countries and names Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean and Chinese for its AI features, but the pages we read give no full course count. Babbel is the only one here with a verifiable list.

Edge: Babbel

Tally: Duolingo 2, Babbel 2, even 1.

When neither fits

A learner who needs live correction from a person should look at Lingoda for scheduled classes or at italki for pay-per-lesson tutors. Someone who wants a free start with a paid premium tier but a different course style could try Busuu.

See Lingoda, italki and Busuu among the 12 products in Best Language Learning Apps in 2026.

Questions and answers

Is Duolingo free and Babbel paid?

Mostly yes. Duolingo describes itself as free to learn with, and its paid Super tier removes ads and gives unlimited energy. Babbel lets you try the first lesson of every course free and signing up is free, but continued access is a subscription.

Which has more languages, Duolingo or Babbel?

Babbel's home page lists 14 languages. The Duolingo pages we could read give no total number of courses, so we cannot name a winner on count from vendor pages alone.

Do Duolingo and Babbel have AI conversation practice?

Yes. Duolingo Max adds Video Call and Roleplay powered by GPT-4, and Babbel has Babbel Speak, an AI feature for realistic conversation situations. Neither replaces a human teacher.

Who is behind Duolingo and Babbel?

Babbel's footer names Babbel GmbH, and its about page lists offices in Berlin and New York City. Duolingo's research page cites more than 500 million learners; the legal-entity page did not load for us, so see the category listing for its publisher.

Is Duolingo Max available everywhere?

Duolingo's blog says Max is available in 188 countries on iOS and Android. Video Call and Roleplay are for English speakers learning Spanish, French, German, Italian or Portuguese, and Japanese, Korean and Chinese learners get only Video Call.
