Teams look past Azure when the invoice has too many meters, when the free account ends after 30 days, or when they run Linux workloads that gain little from the Microsoft licensing links. Most move simple servers to Hetzner, Scaleway or DigitalOcean, and take Google Cloud or AWS when they still need hyperscale breadth.
Visibility in our rankings can be paid for. Payment moves a vendor's position within
the shortlist; it never adds a vendor, and it never changes a word of the review or of this page. The first three alternatives
go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the
established names follow in their ranked order. How it works:
placement disclosure · editorial process.
What each alternative does differently
Plain virtual servers rounded up to the hour and capped at a monthly price, with only outgoing traffic billed. Locations are Germany, Finland, Singapore and two US sites. The page lists Linux images and no Windows image, so a Windows Server estate needs another route.
Switch from Microsoft Azure if you run Linux servers and want a bill with few line items.

The instance pricing page states that list prices include egress and IPv6 addresses, while storage and public IPv4 are billed apart. Savings plans are advertised at up to 25% off monthly compute. Compare that single-line egress treatment with Azure's tiered transfer table.
Switch from Microsoft Azure if you want egress folded into the instance price.

3. DigitalOcean
United States
Droplets start at $4 a month with per-second billing, 500 GiB of transfer and $0.01 per GiB beyond it. The Kubernetes control plane is free. The product list is much shorter than Azure's, with no counterpart to its licensing offers.
Switch from Microsoft Azure if you want per-second billing and a short product list.

Public Cloud can be billed hourly, monthly or on long-term terms, in regions with one or three availability zones, and is driven through the OpenStack API. Savings plans and bring-your-own-IP are listed. Price tables load in the browser, so use the OVHcloud calculator.
Switch from Microsoft Azure if you want OpenStack tooling and a choice of billing periods.

5. Google Cloud
United States
The Google Cloud free page offers $300 of credit, with no charge until you activate the paid account, plus a free tier on 20-plus products and a 90-day GKE trial. It is a like-for-like hyperscaler, so the move changes tooling, not scale.
Switch from Microsoft Azure if you need hyperscale breadth but not Microsoft licensing ties.

6. Amazon Web Services
United States
The free plan carries up to $200 in credits and closes after six months or when credits run out, while the paid plan opens all services. More than 30 services are free within monthly limits. It is the other hyperscaler most buyers compare with Azure.
Switch from Microsoft Azure if you want the widest service list and have AWS skills in-house.

Kubernetes-first: a free control plane, nodes from about $5.43 a month, and data transfer stated as free and unlimited. Billing is hourly, rounded up. It covers containers, databases and storage, not the identity, hybrid and licensing products Azure ties together.
Switch from Microsoft Azure if your workloads are containers and transfer fees hurt.

8. Akamai Cloud (Linode)
United States
Charges round up to the nearest hour, and the Kubernetes service carries no per-cluster fee on the page we read. A $100 starter credit is shown. Newer G8 and GPU plans include no bundled transfer, so check each plan family before moving traffic.
Switch from Microsoft Azure if you want hourly compute and managed Kubernetes without a cluster fee.

9. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure
United States
The free tier starts with a $300 credit for 30 days, after which Always Free services continue if you do nothing. Oracle's pull is its database line, so it fits teams moving an Oracle estate more than those leaving Microsoft licensing behind.
Switch from Microsoft Azure if your costly workload is an Oracle database.

10. IBM Cloud
United States
A free account opens 40-plus Lite products that never expire, one instance each, with quotas that reset on the first of the month. Lite instances are deleted after 30 days without activity. The $200 credit applies to the first pay-as-you-go account for 30 days.
Switch from Microsoft Azure if you want a permanent free tier for small enterprise-style services.

Machines run per second with no monthly platform fee, the smallest costing $2.19 per 30 days. Outbound data is $0.02 per GB in North America and Europe and $0.12 in Africa and India. It runs containers near users and has no Windows image or licensing tools.
Switch from Microsoft Azure if you run small containerized apps and want per-second billing.

12. Cloudflare
United States
R2 object storage lists no egress charge for any storage class and exposes an S3 API, at $0.015 per GB-month for Standard. That targets Azure Blob storage and its transfer bill, not virtual machines. Workers is a separate runtime, not a place to lift servers.
Switch from Microsoft Azure if your Azure bill is mostly Blob storage and the traffic leaving it.

The Cloud VPS 4 page shows €5.50 a month as an effective rate for a 24-month subscription, with a one-month minimum initial contract and unlimited traffic under a fair-usage policy. A Windows VPS line exists. You manage and patch the server yourself.
Switch from Microsoft Azure if you want large fixed-price servers and will run them yourself.

Questions and answers
Does Azure charge to move my data out?
Not if you follow the exit process. Azure offers free egress to the internet for customers leaving for another cloud or an on-premises site, applied as an invoice-level credit for up to 60 days of egress charges. Outside that process, internet transfer above the first 100 GB a month is billed.
What happens to my data after I cancel Azure?
It is kept for 30 to 90 days at no charge, then permanently deleted. Cancelling disables services immediately: virtual machines are deallocated and storage becomes read-only. A subscription is deleted automatically 90 days after cancellation, so download backups before you cancel.
Can I get a refund on an Azure reservation?
Yes, within limits. Reservations can be refunded up to $50,000 in a rolling 12 months across your agreement, or exchanged for another reservation of the same type. A savings plan cannot be canceled or refunded, so check which one you hold before you plan a departure date.
Can I run my Windows Server licences elsewhere?
That depends on the licence and the new host. Azure Hybrid Benefit applies to licences with active Software Assurance, and licences must run either on-premises or in the cloud, with a 180-day overlap while you migrate. Ask your reseller whether the new provider accepts bring-your-own licences.
What happens when the Azure free account ends?
The account and services are disabled until you move to pay-as-you-go, which you can do at any time. The $200 credit lasts 30 days, but free monthly amounts of 65-plus services remain available on pay-as-you-go. Unused credit remains for the full 30 days.
Can I cut the Azure bill instead of leaving?
Partly. Reservations and savings plans run for one or three years, and Spot virtual machines are cheaper but can be evicted with 30 seconds notice and carry no SLA. These help steady or interruptible workloads, not bursty ones.
