Mozilla Firefox alternatives: 12 compared

Teams look past Firefox when they want a managed console they can price, a browser tied to their cloud suite, or a stricter privacy build. Most go to Brave or Vivaldi, then to Chrome or Edge for managed fleets, and to LibreWolf or Waterfox to keep the Firefox engine.

Short answer: The closest replacements for Mozilla Firefox in our web browsers ranking are Brave, Vivaldi and LibreWolf. Choose Brave if you want a free Chromium-based browser with built-in ad blocking and an optional one-time paid edition. All 12 sit in Best Web Browsers in 2026; what follows contrasts them with Mozilla Firefox only and says when Mozilla Firefox should be kept.

Vendors can pay for more visibility on this website, for example a higher place in a ranking or more room on a page. Commercial relationships can also affect which products we feature and how prominently. Every vendor link is marked the same, whatever the arrangement behind it. The first three alternatives go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow in their ranked order. Mozilla Firefox at a glance

  • Headquarters: United States
  • Pricing model: Free + quote for Enterprise
  • Free option: Free plan
  • Built for: Mixed fleets that want engine diversity
  • Wrong for: Offices already managing every browser setting from Google Admin or the Microsoft 365 admin center, and firms with no one to host a console. Chrome Enterprise Core or Edge for Business fit those teams.
  • Place in our ranking: #1 of 15

Why buyers look past Mozilla Firefox

  1. The managed edition is early access and quote only

Mozilla's admin documentation calls Firefox Enterprise available in early access, managed from an Admin Console that runs on your own infrastructure. The product page offers a demo request and no price. A buyer who wants to budget a fleet cannot do it from the page.

  2. Support is a separate layer

The Firefox Enterprise page says standard support is included with Firefox Enterprise and is available as a paid upgrade for plain Firefox. It routes both to a sales contact and prints no figure. A company on the free browser must ask what support costs.

  3. Older systems move to ESR

The Firefox download page states that Firefox is no longer supported on Windows 8.1 and below or on macOS 10.14 and below, and points those machines to Firefox ESR. A mixed fleet with old hardware therefore needs a second release channel.

When Mozilla Firefox is still the right choice

Stay with Firefox if independence from Google, Microsoft and Apple matters and policy-managed free Firefox or ESR is enough. Mozilla runs its own engine, the browser is open source, and the administrator docs say Intune, JAMF and MDM tools can manage it. Regulated buyers who need an on-premises console should ask for the Enterprise demo.

What to expect when you switch from Mozilla Firefox

  1. Test one real profile first

Mozilla says bookmarks, passwords and history come across automatically when you move to Firefox. The reverse direction is the one to test. Export a pilot user's bookmarks and saved logins, import them into the new browser, and check which extensions have an equivalent before you move a department.

  2. Rebuild the policy set

Firefox policies are set through policies.json, Windows group policy or macOS property lists, according to Mozilla's reference. Those files do not carry over. Chrome Enterprise Core and the Edge management service each use their own console, so budget time to recreate extension lists, update channels and homepage settings.

  3. Check the engine you land on

Staying on Gecko means choosing Waterfox or LibreWolf, which both build on Firefox. Brave states that its releases carry Chromium patches, so a move there changes the engine. Test internal web apps in the new engine before you sign off.

Questions and answers

How do I export my bookmarks and passwords from Firefox?

Mozilla's help pages on exporting bookmarks and saved logins blocked our automated readers on 4 November 2026, so we do not quote the steps here. Follow those pages in Firefox itself, and read the import notes of the browser you pick. Waterfox says it imports common browser data.

How much does Firefox Enterprise cost?

No price is published. The Firefox Enterprise page shows a Request a Demo button and a Contact Sales link, and the administrator documentation describes the product as available in early access. Ask for a written quote that names support terms.

Can I manage Firefox without buying Enterprise?

Yes, Mozilla's administrator reference says Firefox and Firefox ESR can be managed with enterprise policies through tools such as Microsoft Intune and JAMF. The policy reference lists the available policies, and local policy sources include policies.json, Windows group policy and macOS plist files.

Do Firefox extensions work in other browsers?

Some do. Waterfox says Firefox WebExtensions are supported, and Orion says it supports Safari, Chrome and Firefox extensions. Vivaldi says Chrome extensions work in it, so check whether each add-on you rely on has a Chrome version.

Is there a contract or renewal price for Firefox?

The browser itself shows no subscription on the pages we read. Contract length, notice period and renewal price for Firefox Enterprise are not published, so request them in writing during the demo. Firefox Professional Support is also sold through a contact-sales route.

Which Firefox alternatives keep the Gecko engine?

Waterfox states that it uses the same Gecko engine as Firefox, and LibreWolf describes itself as a custom version of Firefox built from the latest stable source. Both remove telemetry. Neither page shows an enterprise offer or a management console.
