Teams look past Basecamp when active-project caps start to bind, when they need Gantt-style planning that its core feature list does not include, or when the jump to the $299 Unlimited Edition is hard to justify. Most go to Asana, ClickUp or monday.com for broader planning, or to Wrike and Teamwork for client work.

Questions and answers
Can I export my data from Basecamp?
Yes, account owners can export a full HTML copy of the account at any time, per project or all at once. Only owners see the option, in Adminland under Export data from this account. You get an email when the export is ready.
What happens to my data when I cancel Basecamp?
Access ends immediately. Basecamp deletes your content from its servers 30 days after cancellation and from backups within 60 days, and cannot recover it afterwards. Download the full export before you cancel.
Do I get a refund when I cancel an annual Basecamp plan?
Basecamp's pricing page says canceling an annual package prorates the difference back to your card. Its cancellation policy says unused time is not automatically prorated, and asks you to contact support for a refund, so ask in writing.
Is there a free Basecamp plan?
Yes. The free plan allows one project, 1 GB of storage and up to 5 users. Paid plans start with Freelancer at $25 a month, and you cannot downgrade from a paid plan to free, only open a new free account.
Does Basecamp have Gantt charts?
Not in its core feature list. The pricing page names message boards, to-dos, card tables, chat, scheduling, docs and reports, and the features page describes Hill Charts for progress. Teams needing a Gantt view usually move to Asana, ClickUp or Wrike.
Who owns Basecamp?
Basecamp is made by 37signals LLC, which says it is privately held with zero debt. Its terms of service define the company as 37signals LLC, which also makes HEY and other products.
