Adobe Acrobat alternatives: 11 compared

Teams look past Adobe Acrobat when a per-user subscription with a cancellation fee is more than their PDF work needs, or when they want to pay once. Most go to Foxit PDF Editor for a like-for-like desktop editor, to Nitro for managed teams, and to Sejda or PDF-XChange Editor for cheaper or perpetual use.

Short answer: The closest replacements for Adobe Acrobat in our PDF editors ranking are Foxit PDF Editor, Nitro PDF and PDF-XChange Editor. Choose Foxit PDF Editor if you want a full desktop editor with a perpetual option and a lower yearly price. All 11 alternatives below are ranked products from Best PDF Editors in 2026, and each says where it differs from Adobe Acrobat and when Adobe Acrobat is still the better choice.

Visibility in our rankings can be paid for. Payment moves a vendor's position within the shortlist; it never adds a vendor, and it never changes a word of the review or of this page. The first three alternatives go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow in their ranked order. Why buyers look past Adobe Acrobat

  1. The annual plan has an exit fee

Adobe's subscription terms say that cancelling an annual plan billed monthly after 14 days triggers a lump sum of 50% of the remaining contract obligation (30% for California). A buyer who sizes the fleet wrongly pays for it.

  2. Price can change at renewal

The same terms say Adobe may change the rate at each renewal term, and will notify you with the option to cancel. After the first year, US customers on an annual contract billed monthly move to monthly renewal. Budget holders get no fixed price beyond the term.

  3. The tiers climb with AI

Standard covers create, edit, convert and sign. Redaction, comparison and web forms need Pro, and the AI Assistant, PDF Spaces and Express tools come with Studio at US$24.99. A team that only edits and signs may pay for features it never opens.

3. PDF-XChange Editor

Windows PDF editor with a one-time license · Canada

Windows only, sold as a perpetual license, and a free version leaves 70 percent of features unrestricted according to the vendor. It has no subscription and no Mac build. Mac users and anyone who wants cloud sharing and signing workflows will find it thin.

Switch from Adobe Acrobat if you work on Windows and want to pay once instead of renting.

When Adobe Acrobat is still the right choice

Stay on Acrobat if your clients and counterparties send documents built for it, if you rely on Pro features such as redaction, comparison and web forms, or if you want one vendor across Windows, Mac, web and mobile. Adobe also keeps the free Acrobat Reader for anyone who only needs to open files. A cheaper editor then costs you time on odd files, which costs more than the licence gap.

What to expect when you switch from Adobe Acrobat

  1. Check the contract before the notice

Cancel inside the 14-day window for a full refund. After it, an annual plan billed monthly carries the 50% lump sum, so the cheapest exit is the end of the term. Note the renewal date and put the cancellation date in the calendar.

  2. Test your own worst files

Run forms, scanned pages, redacted files and signed PDFs through the new tool first. Adobe's trial page lists editing, format changes, page work, password protection and e-signing, so use that list as your test sheet, and compare what the new product does with each item.

  3. Plan for the Reader

Adobe says people can still open PDFs with the free Acrobat Reader after a plan ends. Staff who only read or sign need no paid seat anywhere, so count editors, not employees, before you buy licenses.

Questions and answers

Can I get a refund if I cancel Adobe Acrobat?

Yes, in full if you cancel within 14 days of the initial order. After that, an annual plan billed monthly is charged 50% of the remaining contract obligation, and prepaid annual plans have no refund after 14 days according to the pricing page. Monthly plans can be cancelled with no fee.

Will Acrobat raise the price when my plan renews?

It can. Adobe's subscription terms say it may change the plan rate at each renewal term and will tell you before the change, with the option to cancel. US customers on an annual plan billed monthly move to monthly renewal after the first year.

Is there a perpetual license for a PDF editor instead of a subscription?

Yes, from other vendors. Foxit lists a one-time Foxit PDF Editor 14, PDF-XChange Editor is sold as a perpetual license for Windows, and Xodo lists perpetual licensing for its desktop product. Soda PDF states it sells subscriptions only.

Can I still open PDFs after cancelling Acrobat?

Yes. Adobe's trial page says that if you do not continue, you can still access PDFs with the free Adobe Acrobat Reader. Reader does not edit, so staff who change documents need a replacement editor before the plan ends.

Which alternatives work on a Mac?

PDF Expert runs on Mac, iPhone and iPad only, Foxit lists Windows, macOS and web, Nitro runs on Windows, Mac and iOS, and Xodo Desktop covers macOS and Linux too. PDF-XChange Editor is Windows only, and Soda PDF desktop is Windows only.

What does Acrobat Studio add over Pro?

According to Adobe's pricing page, Studio adds the AI Assistant, AI summaries and answers, PDF Spaces, Adobe Express design tools, Adobe Stock and Adobe Fonts to the Pro tools. If none of these matter to you, a plain editor covers the rest.
