US presidential hopeful Tulsi Gabbard has issued repeated statements warning that Donald Trump is leading the US into “war with Iran”. A war that she says would make Iraq look like “a cakewalk”.

Tulsi Gabbard has issued a video statement warning that US president Donald Trump is on, “the brink of launching a very stupid and costly war with Iran”.

Bolton and the warhawks “pushing for war”

Gabbard is a Major in the US Army National Guard and previously served two tours in the Middle East. Her statement, posted on Twitter and YouTube, ominously warns that the US president is listening to:

“his national security advisor John Bolton and other warhawks in his administration who have championed the war with Iraq in the past and who have been pushing for war with Iran for years.”

US war in Iraq killed “hundreds of thousands” of civilians

Gabbard’s statement says that as a result of the “devastating” US war in Iraq:

“over 4,000 of my brothers and sisters in uniform were killed. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians killed. Trillions of our taxpayer dollars wasted, and al Qaeda and Isis were strengthened.”

Gabbard is also a member of the highly influential, invite-only Council on Foreign Relations. Though her views represent the outer edge of acceptable opinion within the US’s premier foreign policy institution.

War with Iran would prove “far more costly and devastating”

Her video also says that “warhawks” like Bolton have learned nothing; and they still think invading Iraq was the “right decision”.

The Congresswoman from Hawaii warns that:

“So now, we’re being lied to again, as Bolton and Trump push us closer and closer to a war with Iran that would prove far more costly and devastating than anything we experienced in Iraq.”

Trump says “he does not want” war with Iran

The New York Times reported on 16 May 2019 (the same day Gabbard released her video statement) that:

“President Trump has sought to put the brakes on a brewing confrontation with Iran in recent days, telling the acting defense secretary, Patrick Shanahan, that he does not want to go to war with Iran…”

Actions speak louder than words

On 17 May 2019 Gabbard told Fox News host Shannon Bream that:

“What is concerning to me is that while Trump and others in his administration say they don’t want to go to war with Iran, I hear them saying that more now they’re getting a lot of pushback from our allies, like those in the UK.”

Gabbard continued:

“When in fact, the actions that the administration has been taking are telling us another story, it’s actually pushing us closer and closer to the prospect of a war with Iran.”
